For those that watched him will know he was pre Gronk. You knew it was going to be a big play when he caught the ball. The dude was impossible to bring down in the open field and defenders couldn't body up with. They were always asking for flags he was so powerful. The Pats were loaded on offense with Glenn, Coates, Jefferson, Brown and Martin in the late 90's. Injuries prevented them from doing more during the Carroll years.

the sound of the bermanesque Ben "Winter" Coates still rings in my head after all these ears...

Guy was a fantastic player, and gets short shrift when people talk about "great" players...

Will never take anything away from Ben as he was a beacon of hope in the 90's, before him was Russ Francis (8 seasons between '75-'88) who Howard Cosell called "All World"...

The only thing I hate about this video is that it's not long enough. He was my favorite Patriot in the 90's. He just caught everything that came his way.

He was one of the 90s best Tight Ends he should be in the Hall. But they don't seem very interested in Patriots with multiple rings so why would they care about Ben.

And Ben got a ring with the Ravens just for good measure.

He was Bledsoe's safety blanket on 3rd down. Can't remember how many times he'd make a catch on 3rd and long with 3 guys all over him.

He was a beast, I loved how he sometimes seeked out the tackler to initiate contact. I had a Coates jersey during his years here.

I think I read something to the effect that no TE with 500 catches has ever NOT made the Hall of Fame.

Coates retired with 499.

There are more than a few TE's with 500+ receptions that aren't in the HoF... some pretty big names on the list...Patriot related you got Ben Watson who has 547 receptions (retired after 2019, so we will see if he gets a nomination or any traction in what, 2025?) Coates is better than Watson imo

then you got Heath Miller, Jeremy Shockey, Vernon Davis, Delanie Walker, Frank Wycheck, Dallas Clark, Jared Cook and Todd Heap is stuck at 499 with Coates... he was a better player than most of those guys as well...

Coates is a borderline player, but definitely merited more consideration than he got... another failure on the part of ron borges...

i think the next tight end to get in the hof will be greg olsen, followed by gronk a year later...

Coates is Hall of Fame Worthy.. Plain and simple. It's a travesty he's not in. Same with Stanley Morgan.

Good research. I should've updated my own. Last time I looked, I was still in college in the early 2000s, when most of those guys were either still playing or had yet to play. That's still a very small list. And I don't think any of them were included in 'most dominant tight end of their decade' discussions!
