Very thin @ CB.. Will a trade for an experienced CB be viable?

THE TEAM IS PERFECT CEASE ALL DISCUSSION IMPLYING OTHERWISE

Well the Team does have a perfect record so far. Is it perfect, no but I believe good enough to win, every time. There are a lot of ****ty teams out there this year. The best teams are the ones that have not lost obviously. Of those GB, Cincy and Pats seem to be the best. Is our D suspect sometimes? Sure but with our O we can afford less than perfect D, imo.

One last thought from me on the whole CB discussion. We just played a team with what many consider a very good secondary (Revis, Cromartie, Gilchrist). I'm sure patsfans would love these DBs on our team. Well they lost. Difference was Fitzy vs. Brady and Fitz played pretty damn good.

Bottom line as long as we have Brady, Gronk, Edellman, Dola, LaFell, Lewis, Dobson, Blount, etc. the Pats are unstoppable. There are just too many weapons for Brady, who is so damn good and clutch. I'm happy and not worried at all (maybe a little during the games).

Relax. Forums are for discussion. That's what we do. Enjoy.

I can probably narrow the entire forum to about 50, maybe 100 posters who are able to respectfully discuss and disagree on certain issues regarding the team, at least on a consistent basis. Most seem to forget that is what the forum is designed to promote--healthy and respectful discussion about the football team.

At times, that is going to mean differing opinions and stances. At the end of the day, we're all on the same side. Too many either show one extreme (homers) or the other (CL's), and are snarky or just outright assholes when you try and debate any opposing points.

Teams with big WRs like the jets..will expose our secondary. We need some type of insurance...because another injury...hell even without one...we need help

Didn't watch the Jets game, did you??

Matt Forte to Broncos among trades that would make sense - NFL.com

Sean Smith, CB, to the Patriots

"Three years ago, Bill Belichick successfully landed some needed cornerback help when he plucked Aqib Talib from the Bucs. This season, Smith could be Belichick's Talib. The seventh-year pro fits the Patriots' mold as a tall (6-foot-3) corner with long arms, and he could really help their secondary. I could see him moving for a sixth-rounder."

Seeing as he's an every down player on their defense, I think the Chiefs would get at least a 6th round compensatory pick for Smith if they just let him walk during free agency.

Sean Smith ranked as the #6th best CB for 2014, according to Football Outsiders.

KC should definitely be getting somewhere around the range of a 4th round comp pick, in my opinion. I see no reason why Smith wouldn't sign a relatively larger deal, particularly since the CB market has gone back up again.

I'd be very surprised to see an acquisition like this, for several different reasons, although stranger things have happened.

Some here will be awfully surprised to see who comes in at #2 behind Revis (Chris Harris), and how they have him ranked in the "leading role CB" category, whereas Aqib Talib is in the "supporting role CB" category.

Whether you consider Harris 1a, 1b, or CB2--the Broncos absolutely stole him with that new 5 year/42.5 million dollar deal that was recently signed in December, right before the CB market picked back up in dramatic fashion.

Its going to be fun when a team like the Bengals or the Packers trade a conditional 7th for him.

Trading for Smith seems to make so much s that I doubt it actually happens

It makes sense from our one sided "fan" based opinions of the team who wants him

It may not make the slightest bit of sense from Andy Reid's side, as he may be currently fighting for his job. There's also the fact that KC will have about 35 million dollars in available cap room next spring, so I have no idea why so many are assuming that the Chiefs won't be able to keep him, should they wish?

After all, they should be getting a relatively mid-high pick (as far as comp picks go), with something around a 4th-5th rounder, considering the CB market, his experience, talent level, size, and current rankings among credible sources. It would be all about whether they'd want to wait until next spring to get that comp pick, or whether or not someone offers something similar for this coming spring.

I have no doubt that the front office is looking into whatever options are out there, but there isn't the opportunity to swing an Aqib Talib type deal most years.

This season, seems like a lot of the out-of-contention teams have coaches and GMs not confident enough they'll still be around next season to benefit from the draft picks theyre being offered.

My concern is that you may be right. There's also the fact that we don't have a lot of cap room, as I believe that it's currently somewhere slightly above 3m dollars in available space. A guy like Smith who has a 4.25m dollar base salary would have that prorated (as far as we're concerned) out depending on when we'd make this hypothetical deal.

For instance, even if we make the deal at the halfway point, the Pats will still be on the hook for over 2m dollars, unless I am mistaken. My concern would be that we simply don't have the available space for that, seeing as how a certain amount of money needs to be set aside for reached incentives, etc.

As others have brought up, it may be much more likely that we'll be combing the waiver wire, or making a much smaller "name" deal.

This year the lowest 3rd round compensatory pick received a 8.75M APY deal.
4th round - 6.6M
5th round - 4.025M
6th - 3M

Sean Smith is likely to get the Chiefs a 4th round pick, maybe a 3rd in 2017. If I were the Chiefs, I would not accept a 2016 6th rounder for Sean Smith when I can do much better in 2017.

But Patriots could trade the 4th this year and at worst move the 4th into 2017 where they loose one. That sayed, I doubt Patriots would do it unless Sean Smith make a longer term deal.

can you imagine Forte and Davis on the broncos? holy cow.

They don't have the cap space for both. Davis' cap hit is $7 million and Forte's is about $9 million.

The trade deadline takes place after week 8 games, which means they would have to take on half of that (someone correct me here if I am thinking about this wrong). They are both UFA's next year, so it makes little sense for Chicago or SF to make a trade unless Denver takes on the whole enchilada.

They have to acquire some type of corner. I would be holding my breath if we suffer an injury in the cornerback position. I worry about not having that big corner with size.

My comment about Terrell Brown getting 64/73 snaps in the Steelers game (Butler got 68), while Logan Ryan only received 4/73 speaks volumes to how Belichick and the coaching staff viewed the depth chart. Brown was perceived as a legitimate CB2, proven by his fairly decent play.

Ryan was nothing more than a depth player off of the bench, and that was in a game where we played nickle/dime almost every single down.

If you think that we're a better secondary now than when Brown was in there, I'd respectfully disagree, although I can certainly get behind the idea that a Belichick defense improves as the year goes on. I just don't think that offsets the improvement of Pittsburgh's offensive weapons or downgrade of the CB2 position either though.

I don't disagree, but at the same time the trend is so dramatically positive that I still think it must be weighed heavily. Anecdotally, look at the team allowing 24 points (plus a fumble on the GL) and 500 yards to Indy in the 2004 opener and then totally dominating them in the playoffs without both starting CBs.

You also have to factor in that the front seven couldn't possibly play worse than they did against Pitt. They are already worlds better while dealing with injuries to a few important players. So even if the DB situation is worse, the overall defense would still be much improved.

out of curiosity - what is their cap situation like? not just this year but on a going-foward basis? It seems at the surface that they are paying big $ for lots of players...Talib, Manning, Thomas, Ware, Miller, Ward, Sanders etc..

It would seem as if they are going to have to make some more tough decisions at some point (like with J. Thomas last year).

That said, I suppose we are paying quite a few people some serious money as well..
