Very thin @ CB.. Will a trade for an experienced CB be viable?

They didn't have the NFL's top rusher/backfield receiver in Bell, and were also without WR Martavius Bryant. To take it one step further, they also didn't have all pro center Markice Pouncey, so they weren't anywhere near full speed.

We also had Tarrell Brown in the secondary at CB, as well. In that game, Brown had almost as many snaps as Malcolm Butler, whereas Logan Ryan only saw....four.

Much different situations for both teams.

Injuries are part of the game. We didn't have lafell, stork, Blount, rookies playing the Ol. Dion Lewis in his first game so we didn't know what we had in him and tom just couple weeks ago found out that he wasn't suspended. Beside that we still won. I'm pretty sure if the steelers won they wouldn't make excuses for why the patriots lost. If Brady was suspended they would be happy as can be.

I would put my house on it that NE's improvement in run defense more than offsets the addition of Bell. It also sounds like Pouncey may not return at all this year.

I'll grant you that Bryant and Bell make a difference in the passing game, but your commentary about Brown vs. Ryan is a bit misleading. Even with the absence of Brown, NE's defense is playing much better now and it seems likely, barring injuries, to be playing even better in the playoffs. That's just what a Belichick defense does.

Sean Smith, CB, to the Patriots

"Three years ago, Bill Belichick successfully landed some needed cornerback help when he plucked Aqib Talib from the Bucs. This season, Smith could be Belichick's Talib. The seventh-year pro fits the Patriots' mold as a tall (6-foot-3) corner with long arms, and he could really help their secondary. I could see him moving for a sixth-rounder."

How the heck to the Broncos still have $7.5 million in cap space?

Can't happen. Too much money.

Also too much suck. We already had Bradley Fletcher on the team. We're going to trade for the $8m/yr version?

Because of that ******ed thread now no one can constructively criticize the team's roster without someone bringing it up.

Trade deadline is Nov. 3rd.

I just hope Patriots-Chiefs do a deal for a 6'3" CB.

If Chiefs lose to Lions, maybe that will help...

Surprised Gil Brandt is brimging this up. As noted, while this is a great deal on the Pats side, I still don't see why KC would make the trade on their end. A 6th rounder for a potential key cog on the defense when they have cap room to resign him and a coach who could be on the hot seat? Not seeing the rationale yet. Talib was a character / coaching / injury concern that was drafted by a prior regime; Tampa's motivation was clear to see. I hope he's right, this deal as proposed would be highway robbery.

Teams with big WRs like the jets..will expose our secondary. We need some type of insurance...because another injury...hell even without one...we need help

can you imagine Forte and Davis on the broncos? holy cow.

My comment about Terrell Brown getting 64/73 snaps in the Steelers game (Butler got 68), while Logan Ryan only received 4/73 speaks volumes to how Belichick and the coaching staff viewed the depth chart. Brown was perceived as a legitimate CB2, proven by his fairly decent play.

Ryan was nothing more than a depth player off of the bench, and that was in a game where we played nickle/dime almost every single down.

If you think that we're a better secondary now than when Brown was in there, I'd respectfully disagree, although I can certainly get behind the idea that a Belichick defense improves as the year goes on. I just don't think that offsets the improvement of Pittsburgh's offensive weapons or downgrade of the CB2 position either though.

You responded to a poster's comment which stated that Pittsburgh could pose a threat in the postseason by stating that "we've already beaten them."

No one is making excuses for who won and who lost. I'm simply pointing out the obvious, which is that although we won in week #1, it means absolutely nothing in terms of a postseason rematch. As a matter of fact, either one of these 2 teams has gone on to defeat the other in a postseason rematch, so the fact that "we still won," means absolutely nothing 4+ months later, which is my only point.

My examples of them getting back a player in Le'Veon Bell who represented almost 40% of their offensive output last year (who certainly isn't anywhere comparable to your example of LeGarrette Blount), and deep threat Martavius Bryant, while we lost our starting CB2 is simply pointing out the major differences in player matchups. As you mentioned, one would need to factor in other players such as Blount and Stork just the same.

I only have two wishes:

1. Pats win SB;
2. Pats win SB with existing roster.

All of the nervous nellies on this forum constantly crying about the CB position is getting boring. Thank God BB is our HC. He keeps on adding safeties, lol.

Point 2 above will put two things to rest:

1. Pats won SB 49 because of Revis (no it was because of Brady and our offense scored more pts than other team, duh);
2. Every forum HC wanna be will maybe finally STFU.

BB has a plan and it's working, outscore your opponent. I haven't seen any football team out there so far (including GB) that can outscore the Pats. If we keep them at 24 and we score 30+ we win, every time. Our D can do this.

Relax (if you can) and enjoy the show.

Has anyone ever seen the movie "Groundhog Day", because this thread is just like it.
