many moons ago on KFFL i did a similar examination r.e. Indianapolis and I found they received an inordinate # of first downs via penalty compared to the rest of the NFL. the variance was staggering. This was at the height of the Pats/Indianapolis rivalry, I probably did the study around 06/07 because we had several years of evidence by that point to show the NFL, via the refs, was favoring Indianapolis bigly.
A quick gander shows Indianapolis got 3 first downs via penalty in the 2006 afc title game whilst the Patriots got ZERO. And in the 2007 rematch, which the Pats won, Indianapolis got FOUR first downs via penalty to the Patriots ONE first down via penalty. So in 2 games, it was 7-1 in favor of Indianapolis. I'm sure KC is similar or worse across their main rivals, which would be the Pats in 2018-2019 and then Buffalo.

Exactly. I'd argue that the league was financially interested in breaking up the Patriots dominance to invite new market loyalty in a time that was seeing surging viewership. Just a different time.

I disagree on the financial part. I miss Joker‘s rants on GotoHell‘s jester past and how he filled the corporate halls w ex-jester Pat-haters. I get the argument that he fussed up the whole Capernick kneeling thing. But the strategy of ref manipulation predates that by a wide margin (1st implemented Squeelers-Dolts AFCCG: then flipped from Paymeaton to Rapistburger in SB after the Dolts choked even with ref hands on the scale. ).

This should be a massive scandal. Every play can have a penalty if you look hard enough for one so the league can easily do this to any game. The question is why did it happen here? Was it to favor the Chrefs to clear the way for Taylor and her team to make playoffs? Or was it to protect their gambling partners from taking a beating on the Goff TD? Or both? Also does this explain the two awful OPI calls that took away a score and over 110 yards passing from Maye on Sunday? Did the league call that in too?

If this can happen I'm not betting on NFL games for a while.

A lot of people brush it off saying scoring plays are reviewable. Yes it was reviewed and Goff definitely got into the end zone, there is no question about that. What's not reviewable is for the league to look at a play to see if a penalty occurred then call it in and order the refs to throw a flag. They broke their own rules so the question is why.

I wouldn't trust the Chargers to beat anyone in January but with them being a division rival and regularly playing close games against them they may be the most likely team to knock them off, it would be so Chargers to beat the Chiefs in the wildcard round then go and lay an egg the next week.

Sometimes it's just a matchup game, playing a team a 3rd time is always dangerous.

Intro: My first post. In short, I have been a read only Fan of this forum for many years. I have been a Patriots Fan forevah. I am originally from Dover N.H., married 41 yrs three Beautiful children and 5 even more Beautiful G-babies. It seems almost too good to be true, and I remain cautiously optimistic as there are so many uncontrollable factors that go in to long term Team success. From my view the predominant foundation of a Team’s success is THE QB and THE Head Coach (can lightning strike twice?). More follows without question as this is woefully over-simplified but, throughout the Belichick-Brady era that included occasional sub-optimal defenses, times with a paucity of offensive skill players, questionable o-line play, etc., this remained a constant. We always seemed to be in the Fray (contrary to some). I have loved it all.

New Research Says Yes: The Data Backs Fans’ Suspicions. Hopefully this link will work for those wanting to read through. I definitely recommend it.

It highlights with great clarity the Referee bias when it comes specifically to the Kansas City Chiefs. The researchers/author(s) build an almost indisputable case highlighting the referee disparities that frankly I find quite alarming and yet, confirming. Here are a few cut away quotes from the study “ The research, published in Financial Review, suggests that financial pressures tied to television ratings and league revenue may subtly shape officiating behavior, raising questions about fairness and integrity in one of America’s most scrutinized institutions. The study, led by Dr. Spencer Barnes, an assistant professor of finance in UTEP’s Woody L. Hunt College of Business, examined more than 13,000 defensive penalties from 2015 to 2023. The findings point to a striking asymmetry: postseason officiating appears to systematically favor the Mahomes-era Chiefs, even when controlling for game context, opponent, and situational factors. The analysis found that during playoff games, penalties against defenses facing the Chiefs’ offense were 2.36 yards longer, 23% more likely to result in a first down, and 28% more likely to be subjective calls—penalties that hinge on referee discretion.
