Tyquan Thornton Having a Tough Camp

Yes, I looked at that. He did really well with Brady at QB and Gronk and Hernandez as the TEs but he was here in different offensive positions for 5 of the 10 years the Pats didn't win a SB but lost twice to the Giants.

Look, I think it's way too early to be calling O'Brien anything. That includes savior, bust or anything in between. Time will tell.
Wait. Let me understand this correctly.
While he was here the offense average ranking was 3.8 in points and 3.8 in yards.
The team went 64-16 and went to 2 SBs.
And you think that reflects negatively on him in comparison to all of the other OCs out there?

I see. Now it's a "while he was here" and not an "in the same role" comparison. I wish you'd stop moving your goal posts.

I'm not reflecting negatively. I'm saying let's wait before we anoint him as some sort of savior. And I'm not comparing him to anyone.

My point all along has been that having a GOAT at QB and TE and another mini great TE, plus a GOAT WR for a couple of those years, is what made that offense great. And the overall record reflects on the players on both sides of the ball, not coaches.

In the case of BOB he was also here when we lost those SBs, even though he was in a minor position for the first loss. Btw, I didn't see the game last night. How did BOB do?

You need to understand... last season the Patriots ranked near dead last in pre-snap penalties.

They couldn't even get the play in to the QB, line up correctly and snap the ball.

It was a disaster.

Even if Obie is only able to improve that one aspect and cut out the negative plays (penalties) the difference will be so dramatic... he'll look like a savior.

You seem to be underselling just how dysfunctional the offense was last year.

You brought up “while he was here” not me.
I started the conversation with when he ran the offense.

Wait for what? We are discussing him today. By that approach nothing can ever be discussed. He has a track record. It’s a good one. Who “anointed” him anything? Are you that obtuse?

So coaching a team to 2 SBs in 5 years but losing them while going 64-16 in those 5 years, is a negative reflection on the coaching staff?

Oh I didn’t realize you don’t watch the games, that explains a lot.
OBrien got play calls in on time, there were no substitution issues, we got a look at a lot of different players in varied roles,, so for a preseason game he did what he is supposed to.

All along I've been saying that last season was a wasted year. I even called it a clusterfvck, which it was.

Knowing this, knowing they ranked 6th in scoring in 2021 and 25th last season, Obie only has to remove the mistakes to look like a savior.

My standard is much higher than being better than the worst offensive coaches we've ever seen.

My reason for hesitating with BOB is because of his record with this team. Prior to his arrival in 2007 the offensive staff won 3 SBs in 4 years and after he left the next offensive staff won 3 in 5 years. They also went to another but wasted a greatest offensive performance vs the Eagles. In between those dynastic teams BOB was with the offensive group that went to 2 SBs and lost them both, each time because of a poor offensive showing in the SB to an average Giants team (especially in 2011 when BOB was the OC).

Btw, I decided to watch the first preseason game after @Ring 6 gave me a smarmy response about my not watching games. Of course, as I've said all along, it's too early to judge anything after last season's debacle, but holy crap that offense looked bad.

We desperately need an ‘X’ receiver with elite speed to put fear in the defense. Have a safety playing deep to avoid the top being taken off the opposing defense.

On paper TT fits the bill with his 4.28 40 time.

And yet.

He needs to be given another year. No question.

But to most of us he’s a bust. Will continue to be a bust.

While we are thinking this, we are praying, literally praying, to be proven wrong.

Just make plays, Tyquan, like you did in the preseason game. And not get hurt.

Skinny kid.

TT is slowly showing potential. I just doubt it's enough to be used much this year.
I hope he can keep making plays like last Thurs, and force his way onto the field.

"The following rankings are the points per game scored under Bill O'Brien-led offenses during his tenure in the NFL, in order:
3rd, 14th, 21st, 28th, 17th, 11th, 14th, 18th.

So, there is some variation here. For consistencies sake, let's take out the 2011 season, as that was a very good year for the Patriots' offense and was also likely a bit skewed since the greatest QB of all-time was taking snaps for the team.

The average ranking among points per game from 2014-2020 comes out to 17.57, or the 18th ranked scoring offense during his tenure as the Texans' head coach..."
The bar has been set. Let's hope this team scores more than 18 points per game. So far they haven't.

And that gives us hope that Our slender man can make it.
Thank you for the new avatar idea

Another article to ponder what ifs. Tyquan can breakout this season in terms of performance or break out physically . Hope it's the former , else as years go on we will wonder why why why... Why this WR draft curse.
We have had good enough WRs to go to 9 of the past 21 SBs and win 6 of them.
That is about 7 times more SBs than our equal share and 9 times more wins.
Put another way, we have won 9 teams shares of Lombardis the last 21 years.
How could the word curse ever enter the discussion?

I'd like for Thornton to try to catch balls in stride.

Might be my ptsd from Harry always diving unnecessarily and landing right on the tub.

I think we had Brady, Edelman and Gronk and we had a stellar defense in the first wave when defense won championships and the second wave when it was offense driven, Edelman and amendola were so clutch during post season that it helped us a lot and besides Brady elevated the play. Now with wide receivers expected to do more , we have not been able to hit on a single wide receiver in draft for last 12 years . We got lucky with Edelman and he took 4 years to come up. Don't think we have that level of patience these days.

I am just talking about WR draft curse . Hopefully Boutte and Douglas pan out and soften the blow a great extent.

again, when you win more than anyone you aren’t cursed. Perhaps you could call the fans who value shiny objects over winning cursed to have dropped be patriot fans.

And the whining about WRs happened all throughout the success

Great post. I think we can all agree that if there’s one thing that this forum needs more of desperately, it is “whats ifs”, especially what ifs that have already been discussed/debated earlier in the same thread.
