Training Camp 8/11

--Wilson is part of a seemingly very competitive battle for playing time next to McCourty. Patrick Chung is very much in the mix after his impressive return to New England in 2014. Rookie second-round pick Richards has gotten a lot of reps and been relatively impressive. Wilson has shown up and made plays, although he’s struggled mightily in battles with Gronkowski. (Who doesn’t?) Duron Harmon is also in the mix.

--One note on Harmon. Late in practice there was an “opportunity” 7-on-7 segment for young, new or unproven players. Harmon took part in the drill with Richards and Nate Ebner, while more polished defensive backs like McCourty, Ryan, Butler, Chung, Tarell Brown stretched on the opposite field. May or may not be an indication of Harmon’s status at this point heading into his third preseason.

Wilson seems to have moved ahead of Harmon. Harmon has been participating in the "opportunity" portions in practice. Do the patriots drop a CB from that list or do they keep 11 DBs?

I think it's often perilous to project depth charts based on TC reports.

To me, Harmon seems like a guy whose stock is rising, and he's a guy you want around in the unfortunate event McCourty gets injured.

That said, I would love to see T. Wilson step up and prove his doubters wrong. And yes, in that case, I think it'd come at the expense of one of the corners rather that McCourty/Chung/Harmon.

Why is Harmon playing in the opportunity portion of practice?

Maybe he needs the help. Maybe he just likes to practice. Maybe the team wanted an experienced player to anchor the session. I don't know, all I know is that Harmon has been ahead of Wilson since he got here, other camp reports reflect positively on him and he's the only legitimate McCourty backup on the team. So I consider him a near lock.

Could Harmon be on his way out? Seems like Wilson has overtaken him. How many DBs will the Patriots keep?

Safety:
McCourty
Chung
Wilson
Richards
---------
Harmon
Ebner

CB:
Butler
Ryan
Fletcher
Brown
McClain
Roberts
-----------

That is 10 DBs, unless they drop a corner.

Possible. Depends

A) how much they value STs.
B) Does Richards look so good you don't feel you need much else behind him
C) Has either Wilson or Ebner out played him STs aside.

If the answer is A lot, yes and yes then Harmon is gone. IDK how likely that is besides the first one.

The Packers needed to fix the awful mechanics that Cal instilled in Rodgers during his time there. That's why he went from being knocked for his lack of arm strength before that draft to suddenly being able to zip the ball on a frozen rope down the field. Garoppolo has no such issues with his mechanics. Comparing his situation to Rodgers does an injustice to JG.
Perhaps, Kontra, perhaps, but from what you've written, I'm guessing you and I see the QB position differently. I see the major reason for a QB's success in the NFL has a lot more to do with his head, than with his arm.

JG doesn't throw rockets, but his arm strength is good enough, especially in this offense. I love his quick release, and his ability to throw well on the run. It also seems like he throws a good deep ball. All in all I think his mechanics are good. What isn't good is his head, or rather what he is able to see in the 2 seconds he gets to make a decision, At this point he can't process the field well enough to get to his other receivers when his first option is covered, quick enough. Nor should anyone reasonably expect him to. Our ONLY expectation should be that he keep on getting better as time goes on. So far from all reports, he IS further along at this point that he was last season. But he's clearly not there YET.

Coming from his background in a run and shoot offense, playing against division 1AA competition, and then going to the Pats, one of the more complex and difficult offenses in the NFL to master; is a HUGE step for any QB. A step big enough that I don't think its reasonable for us to expect him to be ready to play at a competent starte'rs level for at least another year.

Lets take the example of Tony Romo - He came from the exact same situation and sat for 3 full seasons before he got his chance to start. Even then, after 3 full seasons as a starter he threw for 52 picks while he learned his craft. So in essence, Tony Romo, who probably is a top 5 QB in the league took 6 years to develop into a decent NFL starter, and even more to become what he is today.

Another example on a different tack, lets look at Chad Pennington. I see him as a QB who eventually developed into a guy with a million dollar mind, and a 10 cent arm, yet he was good enough to get a very mediocre Dolphin team to 11 wins. Good decision win in the NFL, but the problem is they are so hard to find these days. And the major reason for that is too often they aren't given the TIME to learn.

BOTTOM LINE - I really believe you can be competitive in the NFL with a good decision maker. The Pats might have the best decision maker of all time, who managed to transform himself from a weak armed game manager, into a strong armed superstar. JG is not likely to duplicate or even come close to Tom's success. HOWEVER if we are patient enough to wait until he's ready; I can see him becoming a capable NFL QB who can lead your team into the playoffs. But I do NOT want to have to see him start the first 4 games of the season THIS season.,

I hope that clears up what I was trying to convey in my original post.

From all reports Josh Boyce is having a good camp he's been in there with the First Team alot which says something granted LaFell hasn't suited up and Dobson coming back from a minor tweak. I dissagree with you saying his skll set is redundant Boyce is the Fastest! WR on this Team he just have to put it together. I think he's going to shine in the preseason games. Boyce right now maybe much better than regarded.
I haven't been to too many TC sessions this season, but I went to a bunch last year, and one of my enduring memories was the fact that 2 or 3 times in every practice Josh Boyce would get behind the secondary. So you are dead right on that score. But last year he had problems with occasional drops and subpar routes and reads.

I can attest that in what little I have seen this season he's seemed to have improved in both those areas. He looks much more comfortable catching the ball on the move, no more bobbling catches, and he seems to be getting separation. What I didn't see from him was him getting deep much, but that could be because he was probably running Edelman's routes and they tend to be more short and intermediate throws.

You echo my thoughts very well. I never understood all the posters dreading to let Brady appeal and maybe lose in the second half of the season and then have to call on Polo.

As far as I am concerned the closer to getting to three years of experience before having to rely on Polo the better it is.

It is not as if a game counts more at the beginning or end of the season. A Win or Loss counts just the same in Game 1 or Game 16 in the standings. The difference is that POLO would have almost two years of learning rather than one at the end of the season.

Hasn't JG been taking reps with the 2nd team mostly? He has no chemistry with the 1st team. I'd imagine that has a lot to do with it.

Also, going up against 1st team D.

Well yeah.....but isn't that the whole point of being a back-up quarterback? Filling in for the starting qb and quickly getting on the same page with 1st stringers?
