Trade pick #118 down

I said a 5th AND a 6th or a 3rd next year. If you choose to believe Reiss then you must think BB committed a huge mistake. I disagree.

It takes two to tango; maybe NO wasn't willing to offer that. They might view that in this year's very deep draft, there isn't much difference in talent level between the 4th and 6th rounds and therefore would rather have two picks in the 5th and 6th than just one in the 4th. And they might not want to trade a future pick in a higher round; remember that the Collins trade was for a 3rd round comp pick this year or if it didn't exist, a 4th rounder next year -- not a 3rd rounder next year.

Please read the thread I linked to. Look specifically at Long Distance's post in page 3 where he quotes Mike Reiss. If you believe Ben Volin's interpretation over the actual information Reiss got, that's fine, but remember that you're sticking your cart to Volin's horse.

I had already edited it to address the PFT article.

On his Twitter feed this morning, Reiss was adamant that they would not be able to trade pick 118, it was pretty funny how many people kept asking him and got the same response.

According to him, if they made some trade and got a higher pick in the fourth (115 or something) then 118 becomes tradeable.

This whole thing is so dumb. Deflategate happened more than three Super Bowls ago and we're arguing about whether we can trade a fourth round draft pick.

Yes, I believe Reiss. Why would BB take 118 instead of a 5th? Because if he takes 118 it effectively gives him 132. If he takes a 5th it gives him 150-something. Why would he take pick 150-something when he could get pick 132?

During the NO trade there was a substantial (day) delay before they announced the confirmed FINAL conditions of the trade. In the fine print of a Reiss? article they said NO had the chance to try and work a trade to move the 4th from 118 down to as far as 131, but they either didn't have time or takers.

In essence, the NO trade brought BB as an extra benefit, 14 picks worth of room in the 4th for him to now move around on draft day if a player he wants is still there. Or to be able to accept 4ths in trade from half the league without paying a penalty.

The 118 remains encumbered unless/until he acquires something higher.

There's conflicting opinions on whether the pick is untradable now or on draft day. Safe to say, if it's tradable it will be traded.
They already traded a 4th for Dwayne Allen. Why can't they do it again?

There is a ton of confusion about the draft pick penalty. It's almost as if the league made a short-sighted ruling without really thinking it all the way through or understanding what the he'll they were even trying to say. Now it seems like they are going to improv and ******** their way through this, and instead of issuing clarification immediately, they're truly clueless about what to do.

At least that's how it seems. But the NFL would never do something that silly and stupid...

The ruling, evil as it was, was thought through and was clear. The problem is that the vast majority of the sports media are idiots who don't know how to read.

They can. They are completely free at the moment to trade the pick they obtained from SEA. They cannot, however, trade the pick they got from New Orleans. It is frozen and can't be traded or pledged. If NE obtains a pick higher than it that new, higher pick will be frozen and and the pick from NO will be returned to NE. When the 4th round of the draft arrives, whichever pick is frozen at the moment that pick would have come on the clock will be forfeited.

Or if you want to look at it a different way, NE does not currently own the pick it got from NO. The NFL is holding it in escrow. If NE gets a better 4th round pick then the NFL will steal THAT pick and put in escrow and will return the other to NE. And whichever pick is in escrow at the moment it is time to use that pick in the draft will go up in smoke.

What the Pats could do during the draft is trade their #96 for the #116 and #138 from Cinci. The #116 would then be forfeit, but the #118 from NOL would be returned. And the Pats would still have the #132 from SEA.
