Why do you hate the New England Patriots and their fan base?
As someone who paid a lot of attention to Mitch Trubisky as a Tar Heel and in his ascent up the draft charts to the Bears, I felt a) he was drafted at least two rounds too early, and b) he needed time behind a veteran to learn to read NFL defenses and truly understand what his playbook provided in different situations.
He started just one season in the ACC and was good. He could make all the throws and execute the plays that were scripted for him by his college coaching staff. But he was not NFL ready and it was one of those situations where the media hype of the draft outweighed the competence of the player. And, there is no question in my mind that race played a huge role in where Trubisky was selected at #2 overall ahead of Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson in an otherwise poor QB draft in 2017. Not a single other QB in that draft started a game (I think) besides Nathan Peterman.
Yet, Trubisky is a smart guy with poise, a good arm, and the ability to use his legs to move the ball when necessary. He's similar to Mark Sanchez in size and ability, I'd say.
The biggest question for me is, can Trubisky read a pro defense at the line of scrimmage and make the right decisions after his time Chicago? He's got 41 NFL starts under his belt, completed 63% of his throws, made his share of mistakes, but could be a better veteran option than Brian Hoyer.
If Stidham is the definite starter, Trubisky could be a backup option for a year or so while Belichick sorts this out. If the Patriots were to go for another veteran, I'd love to see them sign Cam Newton for an incentive-heavy contract, grab Jameis Winston and install a more tightly managed offense than he had in Tampa Bay, or just work out a deal to bring Jacoby Brissett back.
Newton would be so interesting to watch in a New England offense with a strong backfield in place and promising receivers.
