The nice thing with all those picks is it gives the Pats an incredible amount of flexibility. The team can trade up for a coveted player, trade out to 2012, or if no offer of good value comes along they can sit and use any or all of those picks.

I'm already falling in love with our 2011 draft class, and we're only at Week 5.

1a. DE Marcell Dareus, Alabama, 6'4 310, prototype at the position and Oakland looking just bad enough that he might be there for us
1b. OLB Jeremy Beal, Oklahoma, 6'3 267, a guy that does all the things we want in an OLB
2a. RB Shane Vereen, Cal, 5'10, 205, great hands as a receiver, excellent open field speed, shifty, can run inside
2b. OC Stefan Wisniewski, Penn St, 6'3 306, strong and smart interior lineman, and a total luxury pick

That's four starters, right there. I would actually think WR instead of OL with 2b, since it looks like an exceptional class of receivers.

That's a total of 12 picks with three of them going to Den, Philly,KC and Atlanta for a net of 8 picks, without even considering a possible trade of Mankins.
As for the compensatory, I'm guessing it will be a 5th. Green signed a 4yr $20 million contract which would have been a 5th this year. Watson's 3yr $12 million contract was worth a 6th this year but it will be offset by Crumpler's 2 yr $4.8 million as per adamjt13's blog.

BB wants to maximize ROI. Taking a center at 1a is anything but.

some thoughts

1a is going to be a DE or OLB, especially if the Pats are serious about some kind of attitude change. People are throwing around Dareus and Quinn's names. I like what I've seen of Quinn, we'll see where he falls after the NCAA ban.

If one of the elite wide receivers falls into the Patriots laps at 1b or 2a, I think they will take him. Its not that they need a big WR as badly as some people are suggesting. Its just that BB likes value, and based on the depth of this class, we can some get serious value.

Alabama has a lot of highly touted prospects. It will be interesting to see if BB uses his Alabama connections to scout them like he did with Florida last year. If he has special insight it could convince him to take a player at a traditionally risky position, such as Ingram, higher.

Tackles are very important and its hard to miss on them if they are selected early
