Too Bad Brady Can't Throw the Bomb

Go back and watch the Jets playoff game. On the fieldgoal drive at the beginning of the second quarter, Brady threw a beauty down the right sideline to Gaffney (who struggled to get separation from Hank Poteat of all people), It was thrown perfectly to where only Gaffney had a chance to make the catch. Gaffney had a hand on it and should have caught it. That's just one instance where the WR was at fault. With somebody like Moss, or even Stallworth, that would have been a TD. Brady can throw the deep ball, he just hasn't had the receivers to take advantage of it.

Caldwell is nowhere as good as Patten, never mind this year's crew. A ball thrown to Cadwell had to be perfect to be caught.

Well, I am one of them. It certainly ISN'T because he doesn't have the arm for it. When he misses the long ball it is usally overthrown. Unfortunately I think he missed the open guy on the long ball way too often. The receivers COULD be a factor, but I don't know. He missed Caldwell open deep several times this past year.

I'm not really worried though, like I said, he does have the arm for it, and the work ethic to improve. Randy better be in good shape, because this off season, he is going to get PLENTY of running in when he and Brady work out.

IMO opinion the receiver that Brady was the best at completing the long ball to was David Givens. There were so many times where Givens would get open deep just the slightest and Brady would thread it in perfectly.

No huff, Alk. It's just the pattern that appears whenever one problem seems to be resolved, another complementary problem is raised.

To assume that Brady can't throw the deep ball, or is "average" at throwing the deep ball, doesn't take into account his history and the WRs with whom he has played.

A good QB who is capable of throwing for distance and accuracy needs good receivers who can adjust to the ball and put themselves in position to make the catch. Brady has not played with this type of receiver consistently through his career. For awhile, he had Troy as that type of receiver. For awhile he had Deion. Neither had pure breakaway speed that could stretch the field and both were vulnerable to the double cover.

Brady now has Stallworth and Moss, two very different receivers who can adjust to the ball and stretch the field. This is going to be very different for Brady as well, as upstater1 so accurately states that it's "all about wide receivers tracking the ball down like frisbee dogs."

Let's give Tommy a chance to show his long-ball skills before we confirm a perceived problem on this board.

Exactly. Maybe the question should be who would you rather have? There may be better pure passers and there are definitely better QB runners. But who makes better reads and adjustments? Who's has better pocket presence? And who is a more proven winner? He's two minutes and three points from his fourth SB in six years. I'LL TAKE TB EVERY DAY.

I can't wait to see what he can do with elite receivers for the first time in his career. Lou Holtz said that Moss was the best high school athlete he had ever seen, a "bigger Deion Sanders".

Wrong. Look up advanced football metrics, and they will show that Brady's deep throw is in the upper 20% of NFL quarterbacks.

And that pass to Bethel was too long and if it had been on target it would have been a TD instead of Bethel lying on the ground. It's easy to throw up a highlight video with three or four examples to prove the doubters wrong but it really doesn't prove much. Unless of course someone wants to make a lowlight video of him missing on some deep throws.

Anyone know how OFTEN Brady throws deep? Does he do it with more or less frequency than the average? It seems like NE utilizes a short passing game for the most part. Not that they are opposed to throwing deep, I assume it has more to do with personnel and philosophy. I assume they tweak that this year.

I wouldn't start wishing for too many end arounds, unless you want to see him get snapped like a toothpick. Stick to the fly patterns, it's the better bet.
