Time to involve Maroney in passing game more

What is so unsatisfactory about handing or pitching him the ball, given his stats thus far running the ball?PFnV

For the Miami game, I was hoping that they would try to run Maroney outside more, to get him out in space, where he could have some room to beat people. It seemed to make even more sense to me after seeing the crappy condition of the field between the hashes.

I know the Miami D is sound fundamentally, but you have to think Maroney would have an advantage with some room to work with, out on the perimeter. Running him up the gut in the sand wasn't working, so why not try something else?

Actually Maroney was rarely utilized as a receiver in college.

NEM knows what he thinks -- please don't confuse him with facts.

You're damned right I know a hell of a lot more than McDaniels will ever know. Hows that grab ya?

To be honest, I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Seriously, there is a huge issue for the Patriots' offense as to what to do when teams sell out to stop the run. But there are no easy answers and it just drags down the level of the debate to pretend that there are and that anyone who fails to see it your way is an idiot. (If McDaniels is an idiot, then what sort of an idiot is the guy who put him in post and oversees his coaching?)

Great theory, but it doesn't always work. I cite the Miami game. IMO Cory should have carried way more in the second half.
I agree and started a post saying the same, but I think CD was banged up in the 2nd half, hence his no-show.

CD and LM have BOTH been in the 1st AND 2nd halves in the games where the running game has been most effective. I think the CD first half / LM 2nd half has only been the result of CD getting tweaked against Denver and Miami (and at the very end of the Jets game).

I hope CD can hold up, because he has been getting dinged up alot, even in limted play.

There was a BB quote saying something like "Maroney got the yardage designed for those plays", as if to say, they weren't trying to really pile up yardage against Miami as much as kill clock. I forget where I read this quote - but it was something along the lines where he said when Maroney was getting 2 yards on a couple carries that he was getting just what they wanted. This goes with the theory that BB has held back the offense in the AFCE games.

I also think they want to get Maroney more touches - he's been too patient when running inside, he has to accept that sometimes there isn't a hole and you have to be OK with 3 yards. Once he has able to realize which holes he can break for yardage and which he can't, he'll be a lot more consistent.

With respect, he didn't say that.

He said (in a press conference) that Maroney got the yardage that the play was blocked for -- meaning that he got whatever he could be expected to, given what turned out on the play. It doesn't mean that they weren't hoping for more.

Fair enough - I must've misinterpreted his meaning.

Didja notice in the Miami game they had Maroney and Faulk both in the backfield out of pro-set? The only time I noticed it, I think they both just blocked, somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
Mixed bag, it seems one goes out and one blocks, I haven't noticed it favoring one over the other.

Maroney is involved in the passing game, he had some nice blitz pickups against Miami. Once he went toe-to-toe with a DT who busted through against Light and hit him hard enough to turn him away from Tommy and allow the ball to get out.

But I mean the pro-set with Faulk and Maroney back there together, split to either side, and Brady under center... I only recall it once, how many more times did they use that formation?

1st Qtr 13:07, 3rd and 2, Troy makes his first grab. Good blocking, though Mankins was beaten inside by Holiday who pressured Tommy a bit as he rolled right. Mia brought both OLBs, but Maroney and Faulk picked them up (Faulk had the key block, standing up the ROLB then pancaking him as Tommy rolled that way).

I want to say they used it a second time in the first half, but I was skimming and didn't take a lot of formation notes for the offense.
