Lots of people are saying draft a quarterback to groom. This approach could have a successor lined up for Brady. On the other hand, we could use our top picks to bolster that defense and the offensive line. Those would help winning with Brady now.

I'm curious about what this board thinks about Belichick going against his modus operandi and going all in these next two years to try to eek out one more Super Bowl. The odds of that happening increase if we invest in our current needs rather than a quarterback. The downside is that when Brady retires we won't have a quarterback. Are you guys okay with that and the possibility of tanking? I'm actually hoping we go from Super Bowl club to 2-14 laughing stock quickly so we can rebuild in 3-4 seasons with those high picks. It only took Bill one 5-11 campaign to right the ship and we've never looked back.

Why wouldn’t we draft a qb in the 3rd try to develop him, then if he isnt ready sign a free agent who can keep the team competitive.
The idea of tanking, sucking and drafting a QB thinking that makes you a champion is something that has not proven to work.

We could draft a quarterback with a third rounder. I've just been hearing a lot of noise about using our first rounder on a quarterback. To me, I'd rather use those high picks on immediate needs than can win us another championship with Brady. He is our meal ticket and needs all the supporting cast we can muster.

In terms of tanking (if that ever comes to pass), you're right that course of action hasn't proven to work with teams like the Browns or Bills. But you only have to look to the last two MLB champions, the 76ers this year, and numerous other examples in pro sports where gutting a roster, tanking for 1-2 seasons, and getting high draft picks can turn things around quickly. Where things go wrong in this scenario, from my perspective, is when ownership gets too embarrassed with the abysmal play of the team and fires the coach and GM. That means a true reset rather than a planned long-term strategy. If the Patriots keep Belichick and McDaniels, I believe they can quickly turn a decimated roster around.

You can’t compare football to basketball. Show me a football team that this ever worked for. It doesn’t.

Gosh, I wish they’d listened to you. That way, we wouldn’t have had to suffer through another Super Bowl victory.

Was this person even suggesting we tank? I read it the opposite way.

Tank. Nobody expects this team to win a SB. Draft someone in the mid rounds this year. See if him or Stidham thrive. Then get Lawrence. Have a QB competition. Trade the loser

    2020 plan - OK
Yes, we should draft a QB in the mid rounds unless Belichick is able to find someone he really wants and can get in the 1st (unlikely). We would then have 2 QB's competing, plus Hoyer to use as needed.

    2021 plan - ??
I don't expect us to be able to get Lawrence in 2021. However, if we don't have TWO quarterbacks that we want to keep (starter and backup), we should draft a QB in the middle rounds to compete for the backup roster spot.

I would keep using a mid round pick until we have 2 QB's: a starter and a decent backup.

That 5-11 team was better than people thought. When we started 0-5 that season, I was telling people that it was the "greatest 0-5 team in history". We still had Ty Law, Lawyer Milloy, Tebucky Jones, Willie McGinest, Troy Brown, Damien Woody, Kevin Faulk, Tedy Bruschi, and a few more guys from the Parcells/Carroll era.

Then in 01' we loaded the team with ex-Jet cast offs that paid huge dividends (e.g. Hamilton, Pleasant, Phifer, OTIS Smith, etc..).... And drafted Seymour, Light, and saw Brady take the reins....and for Troy Brown to have an insane season along with David Patten.

So, I am not sure how quick BB could turn it around...but currently we STILL have these elite players:

Devin McCourty, Dont'a Hightower, Stephon Gilmore, Joe Thuney, Julian Edelman, James White, and Matt Slater...all of whom are in the top 10 in the league at their respective positions, IMO.

Oh my post didn't age well. I'm not holding out for this year's squad to win - if there is even a season.

Brady didn't want to play for the Patriots after losing against Philly. So when he beat the Rams, he didn't even want to be a Patriot. That's just vintage Brady - he's a winner even when he didn't want to be here.

I was leaning towards tanking but was more interested in people's thoughts on the subject (as I was undecided myself). I've found on the net when you ask a question people assume you're making an argument. In any case, this year without Brady I'm on board for a tank unless Stidham has a phenomenal start to the season.

I am not very experienced at this but are we expecting even too much for 2021........this season will be to build on the experienced guys , this year and next years draft to build for the future......so we will be in better place to challenge for division or conference etc in 2022 ?. Will take a slap down if talking rubbish:):)

Belichick will never throw a season to try and get a player. He believes in a culture of winning, not losing.

Aspiration is a winning season and playoffs.

Expectations should be less than that.

If Stidham was, at a minimum a proven game manager then aspiration would be instead my expectation

Would you throw a season to get a top pick, then be able to angle trades for multiple firsts and really get one of the heaviest 1st/2nd round draft hauls you’ve had in years?

It’s more than one player. 33 is like effectively what our 1st round pick has been in the ballpark of pretty much the entire last decade.

Even if you’re convinced Stidham is the guy, imagine the haul you get if you decide to trade it so someone can jump up and grab Lawrence ? Colts basically rebuilt their team doing that not even for the top guy in the draft.

If you really don’t think you are going to win. There’s a lot more utility in doing that then fighting tooth an nail for a 6-10 to 9-7 record

The Pats have already shown their hand by signing the McCourty's and are clearly not tanking. I have to assume BB feels OK about Stidham and will see what he has. Top of the draft QB's are not a certainly so I think we'll role with Stidham and draft a mid rounder to compete this year.
