Thomas says he didn't hear the whistle - What should the NFL do?

I think they should restart the game from that point nullifying the penalty, and while they're at it they should restart the Superbowl from the point Eli was sacked "in the grasp"

But of course he wasn't really in the grasp, that's just sour grapes on my part, everyone knows that, I mean just because Matt Cassel had a TD taken away this year on basically the same play doesn't mean anything.

What's missing in this thread is that Thomas recieved a penalty for the hit. That penalty affected the game.

The question should be: Does he deserve an additional fine?

Yes. This is the true essence of this argument.

Penalty, yes.

Fine? Don't be absurd.

This isn't the only incident, nor is it isolated. Each new decision like this feeds Goodell's already enormous ego, and the trend is alarming.

The Krafts roll over on it "for the good of the game", but one wonders about the cumulative effect on Goodell's electoral base. This may be a reason why the Tuck fine was rescinded.

I'll confess, though - most of these fines/suspensions being handed out like so much candy at Halloween do seem to take the term "arbitrary and capricious" to a new level.

Just my 2¢....

Great logic. Next time you dont see a stop sign and you drive through it, just tell the cop that you didn't see the sign. I'm sure he will put his ticket pad away and let you go on your way.

Your solution this this "problem" is laughable.

Post again when you can come up with an analogy that actually makes sense.

??????

Mods, are you going to do something about this guy?

Whatever they do to players who lose them a game through stupidity.

Well either it wasn't stupidity or he is lying.

I'm sure I don't need to tell all you mega jocks out there that when you are in the heat of things that you don't hear every little thing that goes on around you.

This also isn't the first time someone claims to have not heard the whistle.

This is a game where millions of dollars are on the line every snap. Someone playing on because they didn't hear the whistle doesn't just possibly determine the outcome of a game it can also lead to injuries.

Putting a simple receiver in the helmet that will notify players that the play is over in addition to the whistle will cut down on all of that.

This thread isn't arguing about whether or not he deserved a flag, he deserved that flag. The problem is that if David Thomas was aware that the whistle had blown, according to him, he wouldn't have delivered that hit so instead of *****ing about it like women let's fix the problem and make sure that games aren't decided again because someone couldn't hear the whistle.

I think the fine was somewhat unfair but I don't pity nfl players in anyway (aside from cases debilitating injuries)

For what? Not towing the company line? Just because you don't like what I say does not mean I should be punished. I was not punished because I didn't insult anyone. No action was taken, because non was warrented.

I know you wish that mods would ban people for having a non homer point of view, but until I violate the rules your just going to have to live with it.

Perfectly legal and acceptable. I didn't agree with what the poster said, and I have a right to voice my opinion on the subject. I think it is beyond insane to put in a rule that would force players to have mics in their helmets to make sure they hear a wistle. Thomas screwed up, plain and simple. We were not wronged, and the game should not be changed because a rare mistake cost us a ballgame....it should have never come down to that.

He shouldn't have been fined in the first place. I don't think that's the first late hit in the history of football, nor will it be the last.
That said, the fact that he "didn't hear the whistle" doesn't change the fact that it was a late hit. So if he was fined for it being a late hit, that shouldn't change based on his excuse.

As a minor point, when the NFL fines a player or coach, the money goes to charity. (So, BB might have gotten a nice tax write-off on that $500K the NFL fined him.)
Not to nitpick, but you don't have to pay taxes on income that you never receive, and the entity that would get the writeoff would be the NFL, since they paid it.

The NFL shouldn't do anything. Thomas is an idiot for that play and he knows it. Whether you heard or didn't hear, on the replay it looks as if pretty much every player in the picture was standing there not doing anything and he still went and took a shot at someone. If there is a loose ball you go after it in uncertainty but Jesus use your head.

His solution is a hell of a lot better than your analogy.
