Currently an assistant OL coach with the Texans.Worst OL "coaches" in the Entire ****ing League, to go with our league-worst WRs coaches, DC & HC.
I certainly wouldn’t call him proven. His career trajectory has not been inspiring and his only claim to fame is he knows DanteEasy fix. Hire Cole Popovich. No relation. He’s proven. Currently an assistant OL coach with the Texans.
That's fair. That’s the thing, I’m not as bothered by him saying he’s proud of the guys for showing up/“the way” they show up (even though that is stupid IMO), as I am bothered that he then tells the reporters/fans that they too should be proud.
Why the F should I be proud of this **** product? So they’re showing up ready to work but then they suck? What does how eager they are to do a bad job matter to me, why should I be proud of it?
The article only talks about the metric, and it was generous because it included 2019's historically high Defensive EPA that skewed the rankings for sensationalism. Why include a Brady year? That's the only thing I'm judging your statement on. Nothing more. If we included everything, then yeah. You are downplaying the metric because one time in the bb era it was as high, 13 years ago, in an offense explosion season (you didn’t list ranking) and looks a little close on a deceptive chart to another year?
You are downplaying a metric that says he took over a defense that was #1 over 4 years and is now 30? It’s a single, important metric but they are also #32 in DVOA.
The reason the statement alone deserves firing is that when confronted with severe decline in the unit he runs he said don’t read too much into that, be proud they are trying.
It’s not the stat per se that led to that comment it’s the mentality that says decline is acceptable.
You're putting words in his mouth. When did he say not to worry about the results?Do you really think it’s effective coaching to tell players they are playing really bad to not worry about the results and be proud they are showing up and trying?
Has this franchise fallen that far that we have no hope to win and want to give out participation trophies?
No I didn't.But you are saying it’s fine as a fan.

Did you read the article? They quoted the rankings when SB was calling the defense then what it is this year and he said “I wouldn’t read anything into that”.You're putting words in his mouth. When did he say not to worry about the results?
I did. I still don't know what the exact question they had asked that resulted in his answer. That would help.Did you read the article? They quoted the rankings when SB was calling the defense then what it is this year and he said “I wouldn’t read anything into that”.

Edit: I found this, but I need the exact quote. It sounds like from different sources that the question was basically, "What's up with the defensive drop off despite their being a top 10 unit historically?" My answer is that the Herald's preferred metric had the 2020 team as worse than 2024 in Defensive EPA/play (although 4 places better in the rankings but still around 24th). Oh yeah - 2011, it looks like they actually ranked just as badly in Def epa/play or maybe worse than this year (source nfeloapp).
I wouldn't read too much into it. /s
Putting it that way makes sense. Makes him sound like a parent trying to get someone random to be proud of their kid for trying so hard and finishing 4th to last in a race. I can dig it.That’s the thing, I’m not as bothered by him saying he’s proud of the guys for showing up/“the way” they show up (even though that is stupid IMO), as I am bothered that he then tells the reporters/fans that they too should be proud.

No. As I said, I'm arguing that he shouldn't be fired based on his statement alone as evidence, which is what your opening post is about. Nothing more. Are you trying to argue the defense isn’t terrible and severely worse?
Yeah this comment alone isn’t fireable but his entire body of work all season combined with these comments certainly is.No. As I said, I'm arguing that he shouldn't be fired based on his statement alone as evidence, which is what your opening post is about. Nothing more.
My point was if that is his attitude he should be fired. And I stand by that.No. As I said, I'm arguing that he shouldn't be fired based on his statement alone as evidence, which is what your opening post is about. Nothing more.
Cole inherited a good functioning OL from Dante. IMO anyone that took over for Dante with the same players was going to look good…for a bit.Easy fix. Hire Cole Popovich. No relation. He’s proven. Currently an assistant OL coach with the Texans.
I think if McDaniels did return like rumored with Vrabel, they may look at Popovich. McDaniels could probably bring back some of his staff whom he poached in 2022 to go to the Raiders, if they aren’t still with the Raiders or moved on to some other team for 2024.Easy fix. Hire Cole Popovich. No relation. He’s proven. Currently an assistant OL coach with the Texans.
I don't know where Covington comes from, but if I don't show up to work every day I get fired. Why the hell should the fans be grateful these players show up to a job they get paid MILLIONS of dollars to do?I understand what you’re saying, and that does happen, but this is not a case of it. He ranted about teaching the fundamentals “every day” and then said he’s proud of the guys for showing up to work every day and then told the reporters that they, too, should be thankful that they show up.
Covington:
"We work those fundamentals every day, so, and we'll continue to work on it. And I'm proud of the way the guys show up to work every day. And you guys should be proud of those guys the way they show up to work every day."
It’s Mayo’s ridiculous culture. “We got our asses beat, and you played like ****, but hey you came to the game and you tried your best. That’s what counts right?”I don't know where Covington comes from, but if I don't show up to work every day I get fired. Why the hell should the fans be grateful these players show up to a job they get paid MILLIONS of dollars to do?
