Yep. After the 5 minute mark when the other team has the ball and is clearly trying to milk the clock I'm all for using up as many time outs as possible on the + side of the two minute warning.

You never know what is going to happen a fumble, or INT and you've got more time to drive the ball down the length of the field. I personally don't like it when teams wait until after the 2 minute warning or real close to it to start calling time outs when the team in the lead is just slowly chewing up 3-4 minutes of time.

Also some of you clearly have no objectivity when it comes to the Pats. I had no complaints about today's officiating at all. It was a pretty clean game IMHO. The idea that the league doesn't want the Patriots to win is ridiculous. They are one of the biggest draws the league has in terms of viewers and fan interest, for better or for worst.

I don't see the complaints about Carey. Pats got 2 PIs in their favor that should have been called and were called. Yeah, the refs missed the hit well beyond 10 yds on Moss at the 1 yd line but refs miss stuff EVERY game.

As to Dan D, my favorite Dorkism was when he said "The Dolphins are GOING FOR IT ON 3RD DOWN!!!" Moron.

yes, and I believe it was 3rd and goal from the 1.

No Dan, they may punt on on 3rd and goal from the 1.

As for Dierdorf, I don't understand the hate for this guy. He is one of the best analyst around.

I seriously hope that is sarcasm.

At least he wasn't paired with Enberg. That was the worst. I got so sick of hearing, "Did you see that ****?", Look at that ****!", "Now watch this ****." ****, ****, ****, ****, **** all game long.

My problem with Dierdorf isn't some perception that he was rooting for the Dolphins. I didn't see that, and I wouldn't really care anyways. What got me was how consistently he screwed up pretty basic stuff:

-saying "they're going for it" on 3rd and goal as if that's some kind of shock.
-pointing out that Wilfork's been moved over to DE two full quarters late, and acting like it just happened
-calling out direct snaps to Pat White, as if it's unusual for the QB to take the snap
-Noticing that Jerod Mayo was back in the game only after he made his second consecutive tackle.
-Calling out how bizarre it was for the Pats to have 1 second left on the clock at the end of the half, when it was clearly correct.

And honestly, I wouldn't be at all surprised if he was making similar mistakes with the Dolphins, but I just don't know enough about them to catch those ones. I openly wondered if Dierdorf was actually watching the game a couple of times today, and that's just unacceptable. I'd rather that there be no announcer than a crappy one.

I'm usually pretty resilient to announcers who are slightly biased towards the other team, but today it was like listening to nails on a chalk board. It wasn't like watching a game, it was like listening to a 3 hour seminar on how amazing every player on the Droolphins are and how amazing the wild cat is.

Non stop b@ll washing on how amazing Vontae Davis is, but hardly a mention on Mayo or Vollmer or any of our other players, many who did prety damn well today.

Dierdorf sucks, but it was the right move. Even a broken clock is right twice a day (unless it's digital).

They maximized the amount of time left on the clock. It was Henne's fault that he didn't know they were out of timeouts. Though I would have kept at least one in case they needed to challenge something. Then again, with so little time left in the game, they probably didn't think they'd need a challenge, and everything under 2 minutes gets challenged upstairs.

Only thing that bothered me today was the lack of replays on the three 1st half pens against the Pats (PI calls against Bodden and Watson, and the offsides on the kickoff).

Can pretty much block out any of the nonsense from the announcers.

"LOOK at the throw by JOE FLACCO. Look at the poise of this young man. Joe Flacco, I tell ya ****, is making throw after throw after throw and taking HIT after HIT after HIT.....and if he can get this touchdown, what a confidence builder that will be for JOE FLACCO.

Anyone else hear this? Late in the fourth, with about 4 minutes left on the clock, the Doll-Fiends were using up all their timeouts. I thought that was whack, but then Dan Dierdorf says that's what Sporana usually likes to do in games, use his timeouts before the 2-minute warning, and Dan thought "it was really a good idea against the Patriots."

Good idea???

Was it still a good idea when they got flagged for delay of game because the QB tried to call a timeout when they didn't have any left? Or when the Pats pretty much had the game won with 2:50 left? Or is it just me?

Meanwhile, as the Pats were up by 10 points (and Miami was out of the time outs with the ball at the end of the game), all both he and Greg Gumbel could talk about was how well the Dolphins played and how they had shown the Pats so many different "looks" from the wildcat. Right after that they went for it on 4th & 15 from their own 30 yd. line with lots of time left, but no time outs, and didn't convert, handing the Pats the game.

for the most part i dont mind DD but today he was awful

Dierdorf has a serious mancrush on Vontae Davis.

Amazing how all of our esteemed female members here have no problem seeing what a huge dork Dierdolt is....but a number of our male members "see nothing wrong with him at all", after a game like this.

Truth be told, most of the other teams fans in the NFL hate him too...for exactly the same reasons a lot of us do....so I guess that skews the whole "He's biased" issue.

If it were any other commentator we wouldn't have this thread. He was right and the coach was right in making the choice to burn the time outs to save the clock when they were still only behind by 7 points.

We do have to give him credit for something that was pro-Patriots for once- he took a direct barb at Brady's critics when Brady was pleading for a penalty unsuccessfully with Porter getting singled out for criticism. He could have gone and criticized Brady but he went for the high road and went after Porter and other critics.

I totally agree! 40 seconds between snaps and what do they do? Replay important penalties or just simply let the two announcers yap about nothing? Great calls by the director......

How about, "I gotta think the Dolphins are going to go for it here!" on third and goal?

EDIT: Nevermind. PWP and others beat me to it.

Miami used the timeouts when they did and it resulted in Miami getting the ball back with plenty of time to score a TD (enough time to even go with running plays). There is the answer to whether it was the right call.

LOL. My wife caught that one before me.

I wasn't aware until they incredibly had no timeouts at the end, but doesn't a good coach find a way to strategically deploy 2 timeouts and leave one in case it's needed?

Why is it all or nothing?

My guess is BB keeps them from running the clock down while retaining one.

On the other hand, Herm Edwards would have just kept calling timeouts and getting penalties until someone explained it to him.
