Looking at the 8-2 record that this young, overhauled Patriots team has earned, a few thoughts come to mind:

The window is wide open. I can't be the only one who, after the playoff lost last year, looked at the team and thought maybe the window was closing; it's too bad, I thought, that we have to restock with all these rookies when we still have Brady and Moss in their prime. Well, guess what. Moss is gone (and past his prime), the rookies and fill-ins have been stellar, and the window is open. Wide open. With another big draft coming up.

Note to the rest of the NFL fans: Patriots aren't going anywhere. I thought of this leading up to the Colts game, how sick I am of them. And the Steelers. And the Chargers. And the Ravens. Well, imagine how sick the rest of the teams' fans are of the Patriots? They probably thought they would finally start to fade away. Well, 8-2 in a "rebuilding" year tells me -- Pats aren't going away.

Playmakers still make plays that still win games. This board is funny. After the game yesterday, I would have thought the Pats lost. A lot of people talk about almost blowing games and seem to think this team is nothing like its championship predecessors. Well, remember the 2003 regular season game, the one with the Willie McGinest stop of Edge at the goal line? Pats had a 31-10 lead at one point, and won, 38-31. That's right, the legendary D of Seymour, McGinest, Harrison, Bruschi, Vrabel, Law et al came within a few yards of blowing one against the Colts. But they're playmakers, and they made plays when it counted. This 2010 team has made plays to beat Baltimore, San Diego, Miami, Pittsburgh and the Colts - -the best in the league (with a rematch pending against another top-ranked team coming...) That's what those dynasty teams did - -make enough plays to beat the best. "This," said McGinest in '03, "is what championship teams are made of." There sure is room for improvement, but you have to be excited for the knack this D has.

Before the season started, I compared this team potentially to the 1996 Pats. That team had a veteran quarterback and a few other older guys thrown in. It had some second- and third-year players who would form the cornerstone of the dynasty. And it had some rookies who contributed in a major way. It also went to the Super Bowl. The 2010 team is in the running to do the same, but there's a long way to go. Still, this young team of playmakers has given us plenty of reason to believe they can do it. They have re-opened the window, and that in itself is quite an accomplishment.

You're right about the rest of the league being sick of the Pats. Ever check out a Jets' board? There's more than a few "why do THEY have to be around? Why can't we just be running away w/it/" kind of things. Heh.

As long as Brady is under center and BB is head coach, they Pats aren't going anywhere; some years they'll be dominant, and some they'll be the pesky contenders, but they'll always be in the mix w/ those 2.

It's a longer run than similar teams throughout history, since Brady had such great early success, and BB is a relatively young coach. Even with a Brees/Payton pairing, it took about 5-6 years to get to that high of a level, so the window is just shorter.

They say that most of the rest of the country hates us, but my contacts from away all say differently... not sure why they would hate us. But not sure of much these days anyways..

I doubt you're the only one who had those thoughts but AFAIC, the window is and shall remain open so long as we have Belichick and a healthy Tom Brady. Brady took over a team that was 5-13 in their last 18 games and went 14-3 the rest of the way, including a Super Bowl. With him under center, there's always a chance.

Belichick has removed that rickety old window that keeps closing shut and replaced it with a retractable dome.

All very good points...... All the more amazing with the number of players on IR.

All teams lose key players but I think the Pats and Colts have really been hit especially hard.....

It really makes the remaining season and future look bright.

Plus: We have our usual stockpile of first couple of rounds multiple picks... I like being a New England pats fan!

They may not win it all this year. but this young talent plus the talent from the upcoming megadraft, matures, this team is going to become dominant again. It's fun watching and getting to know these young, talented character players, knowing that greatness is in their future. ENJOY THE RIDE GUYS. It's not every day that an NFL team, dominant for a decade, reinvents itself in time to dominate the next decade. We may never again see such a long period of dominance by a team in the NFL... ever. Watch these young players with this knowledge, and the games become much more enjoyable. These are times to be treasured as a fan.

For those still pissed about us hanging around, they're really going to be unhappy this April with our 2-1's, 2-2's and 2-3's with the 2 and 3 being a top 1-6 pick in each round, never mind that Raider top 15 pick. Adding this to the great youth we have will really piss every one off.....

the only thing that is stopping the pats from being the #1 team in the NFL is a lack of pass rush.

the secondary is becoming pretty solid and if there could possibly come some way to apply a more consistent pressure on the opposing QB, then this secondary would be fine.

another injury at RB would change all that though. the pats need BJGE and woodhead healthy the rest of the way.

don't overrate yesterdays outcome.......you repeat that 4th quarter 10 times, and manning will win 7-8 of them

My business partners, clients and out of state colleagues have a respect for what BB is doing this season....not hatred just a respect for a great coaching job that is going on with all the new rookies especially on defense.....not picking up on any hatred.

There's definitely something in the national psyche that likes to knock people down and see them pick themselves up again. The Pats under BB/TB have gone from underdog darlings to nasty villains to, now, just plain old respect.

What's really fun is the future Ty Law, Rodney Harrison and Tedy Bruschi are in place and getting valuable experiece. They have their D leadership cornerstones in place with McCourty, Chung and Mayo. Really think BB is going to draft some serious edge rush/D line along with O line and RB in the next draft. Get Lee Bodden back next year along with some pass rushing talent and this D is going to be very good.

As long as we have TB at QB the offense is going to be good. Begging BB to draft a quality RB. Wouldn't it be great to have a stud RB for a change.

It really is unprecedented--past "teams of the decade" have pretty quickly faded once the decade ended. With the huge caveat of injuries & the unforeseen developments, the Pats in 2012 should be frightening, with this group, next year's loaded draft getting a year under their belts, etc.

I'm sorry, but this is by far one of the dumbest comments I've seen on here in awhile.

1) You're making statistics up with, "Manning will win 7-8 times."
2) You could say the same thing about Brady. 7-8 times Brady extends the last drive and the Colts never get the ball again.

Assumptions and what if situations are the worst possible way to look at game outcomes. Unless you want to get into parallel universes or a discussion about events and time.

Agreed. Repeat that 4th quarter (same score, same time remaining, same opponent) and we WIN 7 out of 8. Just like Sunday. As usual, as it seems this year, everything went right for the Colts in the 4th, and wrong for us. On both sides of the ball.

Does anyone know where to find opposing quarterback passer rating by quarter for the Pats this year? I'd like to see how much better we are in quarters 1-3 vs the 4th as a proxy for game state and situation, and us going into a 4th quarter prevent in 75% of our games this year. Just looked for 15 minutes to no avail.

Really? Are you that sure about this? You must clean up in Vegas on a regular basis..... Dumbest comment I have seen in some time here......

The ONLY thing that matters is that Manning FAILED yesterday...he blew it big time!

"IllegalContact" sounds like you're a Polian fan. Polian is THE #1 cry-baby in the NFL. So, are you a happy Patriots fan or a cry-baby fan of Manning and the Colts?
