With the cutting of Dowling, it seems that 10 defensive backs are set. There is an outside chance of carrying an 11th, but he would be a STer competing with LB/STers and others for one of the last roster spots.

Yes, Belichick could prove me wrong by cutting one of the Wilson's. However, this does seem unlikely.

Looking at the Secondary, until we know what's going on with Dennard there's question marks at Strong Safety and Corner #2. That doesn't fill me with a huge amount of confidence given every one of the 3 defensive units appears to have at least 1 to 2 question marks (per starting line).

The team could use another CB. Brown is still out there, for some reason. After Talib-Dennard-Arrington, we have a rookie and a JAG. I know McCourty can come down and play CB in a pinch, but he's much, much better lining up at FS.

It would be set if we had some better safeties. I think we can manage with the cornerbacks we have, not the safeties.

Talib
Arrington
Dennard
Ryan
Cole

McCourty
Adrian Wilson
Steve Gregory
Tavon Wilson
Duron Harmon

I want Kenny Phillips

Kenny Phillips just got beat out by Patrick Chung

Kenny phillips is one of those cursed giants DBs who seem to get hurt in training camp.

I think 10 DBs is a good number, though it could easily be 11 or 9, depending on other roster moves.

At Cornerback, the top trio entering the season will be Aqib Talib, Kyle Arrington, and Logan Ryan. When the Patriots go to nickel, Arrington will probably jump to the slot and Ryan will be on the outside. This arrangement is only because Dennard has missed nearly all of camp and preseason games, and faces potential jail / suspension. Until his status is determined, he can't be any higher than #4 in my eyes. If he is cleared, he could definitely start alongside Talib again, assuming he's healthy. He has the talent.

For the #5 CB, Cole looks like a safe bet. If the Patriots want to keep a sixth CB, Morris and Green are good candidates already on the roster, though I think it would be more likely that they swing a trade / sign another cut.

At Safety, Devin McCourty is locked in at FS and is a potential Pro Bowler. SS is a huge question mark. Last year, Gregory manned the spot next to McCourty. There was some good and bad, but it seems his bad were more blatant and obvious than the good. The team signed Adrian Wilson, yet he hasnt shown much in any capacity. Duron Harmon and Tavon Wilson are 3rd stringers at best, and should be primary ST contributors.

If I had to project the starting Secondary:

Aqib Talib - Adrian Wilson/Steve Gregory - Devin McCourty - Kyle Arrington

Gregory and Wilson would rotate depending on situation.

That is about as average of a group as you can get.

An "average" secondary in 2013 would be a major improvement over 2012 performance.

I said that they were sat, not that they were all good players. I don't that any better will be available.

An average secondary with an improved pass rush/blitz pkg will do wonders for the Pats Defense.

I agree, Talib puts them to average. When he goes down expect a repeat of the past couple of years.

BB got to look at Kenny Philips for 4 days and then a pre-season game. If he liked what he saw, he would have scooped him up already.

So you don't think McCourty is a a good FS or Arrington is a solid Nickel CB?

Secondary is never set ... never has been and never will be ... Murphy's Law says so.

When you look at the Secondary in that fashion, I have complete faith in Talib, Dennard and McCourty. I hope that improves and improves quickly.
