How "great" our defense is will depend on the youngsters... Chandler Jones, Hightower, and Ras-I Dowling

Look at how a rookie (Aldon Smith) and an unproven sophomore (Navarro Bowman) helped turn the 49ers defense into one of the elite last year.

This year we've got a rookie who has Aldon Smith type of potential, another rookie in Hightower who could have a huge impact, AND a sophomore who is basically in his rookie season in Ras-I Dowling.

It is a slight to Jones to say he has the potential of a guy who only played in sub packages.

How is your confidence with the secondary though?....good post on the DL and LB, they were spectacular on Sunday and caught EVERY ONE's attention....

If you think a full time player feels being compared to a guy who only plays in sub packages is a complement because the guy go some sacks, more power to you. You should however focus more on football being played than the stat book.

If I'm not mistaken, the 49ers signed cornerback Carlos Rogers in unrestricted free agency last season.

I think after 1 nfl game Chandler Jones would be ok with being compared with Aldon Smith.

    Slighted... that is funny...

Don't mean to go off-topic, because I agree that we should temper our enthusiasm until the Murderers game, but I blame our near-loss in the AFCC more on the sometimes-bizzaro play-calling of BO'B in GTG situations, the brain-dead INT meant for Slater (?!?), and the non-FaceMask flag that should've been thrown at the Bal'more WR when he literally pulled McCourty 5 yards on his way to the EZ. Simply put, the game should not have been that close.

Some terrific points, here, Brother Ken.

1 ~ I didn't know that we were two-gapping, either!! [IMG] In my defense, I always watch Opening Day at my Bro's house, and such occasions are given to consuming Mass Quantities of Fizzy Lifting Drinks and rejoicing...and perhaps less so to a scrupulous focus on who's lining up where!! :p I'll roll the tape either today or tomorrow ~ my days off!!

2 ~ If you check out the Site I linked to, you'll see something interesting: Even though all 4 Linemen have 2 Gap Responsibilities, only the D Tackles are lined up directly opposite their men ~ the 2 Technique, opposite the O Guards.

3 ~ The Ends are aligned off the outside shoulder of the O Tackles ~ the 5 Technique.

4 ~ Is that how we played it Sunday? I have a vague recollection that that's a Yes, but I'll have to check...

5 ~ If so, then that means that both Ends and both Tackles have overlapping responsibilities ~ 1.5 Gapping, if you will ~ as they all share Responsibility for one of the "B" Gaps ~ the one between the O Guard and O Tackle.

6 ~ I especially liked your point about Rob Ninkovich: Despite my high opinions of Chandler Jones, Jermaine Cunningham, Trevor Scott, Jake Bequette, and Julian Francis ~ the lot'f'm!! ~ I have lofty expectations for Rob Ninkovich, who I would want on the field above all of them, if it came down to trying to thwart a last minute Drive in the Super Bowl. I don't expect great statistics from the guy, any more than I would from Vince Wilfork: I just think that this is a guy who quietly, viciously, and relentlessly does his job so damned well that he is more essential to the success of all 11 men than any of our Dragoons!!

7 ~ Couldn't agree more on your last point: The Potential for this Defense, come January, is awesome.

    Thanks, Brother Jones.

I am actually very optimistic about our Secondary:

1 ~ Devin McCourty, I've got Locked & Loaded for an enormous Resurgence, on the same scale as Jermaine Cunningham, Esquire. McCourty's got all the tools ~ Processing Speed, Field Vision, and, above all, Verticity ~ the ability to Flip Hips and Turn & Burn. He's a Tape Rat, a Scrapper, a Scraper, and his Confidence is Rock Solid. All he suffered, last year, when you boil it down, was an acute case of Sophomore Jinx, exacerbated by a truncated Off Season and a Schematic Change...He'll be Rocking & Rolling, this year, one of the very best CornerBacks in all the Land, I say, and millions will wonder in amazement how they ever doubted'm.

2 ~ Kyle Arrington, the former UFA, is, arguably, every bit as talented as Devin McCourty, and combines explosive Burst and outstanding Verticity with a voracious Passion for the Game. He is just getting started in carving out a reputation as one of the most reliable CornerBacks in all the Land.

3 ~ Ras I Dowling is the Wild Card in this group. I don't know if I see the Verticity to Turn & Burn with Grade A Wide Outs at this level, but evidently Coach Bill The Mad (Genius) did, as he started'm on Opening Day, one year ago...If Mad Bill is right on this guy and if he can stay healthy, we could go from a good Secondary to a great one.

4 ~ Alfonzo Dennard was incredibly raw and undisciplined in his College career...and in his College life. But the raw Verticity is there to keep up even with elite Wide Outs...and he is fearless. If Mad Bill and Alfonzo, himself, can harness his extraordinary Skill Set...we could have a phenomenal Weapon on our hands, here.

~ Our Corners are extraordinarily physical and nasty in Run Support.

~ And our Safety Corp ~ one short year later ~ commands stunning Depth of Talent.

~ If our Front 7 evolves as I expect it to, this year, a decent Secondary will be enough for Excellence.

...And I expect our Secondary to be an Hell of a lot better than decent.

i'm thrilled about our D this year especially because of the high draft picks we had... jones wilson AND hightower have the good size, skill and maturity. i thought jones and hightower looked good on sunday and figure to be valuable players for years. Wilson is contributing as a backup but all received lots of repetitions in training camp.

I don't disagree with you at all.

The Ravens AFCC game last January re-emphasized just how vulnerable the Patriots were (are?) to an offense with play makers in the backfield and at the receiver positions. The Pats were clamping down defensively heading into the playoffs, but Baltimore hung 432 total yards on them, 126 on the ground 306 through the air.

Worse, they had sustained drives, particularly the two in the fourth quarter. Time of Possession (which is usually a bogus stat) mattered in that game because the defense just could not get off the field at the end leading to the botched TD to win and the botched FG to tie.

Baltimore ran the ball 31 times in the AFCC - 21 by Rice and 6 by Ricky Williams (4 by others). That number of running plays keeps Brady off the field and reduces the number of possessions. The defense has to get the ball back more than it did in that game.

In 10 days we find out if this re-tooled defense can get some stops and turnovers. Enthusiasm about the defense in 2012-13 is fine, but Tennessee and Arizona are not a valid yardstick. Baltimore will be.

I can't claim to know a good safety or cornerback when I see it, but the eyeball test is more pleasing than I can remember in the past. Our secondary wasn't even competitive in most games last season. Part of that is safeties who are conscious working with a full offseason.

While I may not go as far as Phil Simms went, this front seven is something.

...And as crazy ~ as irresponsibly ludicrous ~ as it will sound to the more conservative element, hereabouts:

I still maintain that Nate Ebner will prove to be the best of'm all.

    True Story!! :rocker:

It's not for me ~ or any'f us ~ to tell others to get excited, if it's not in their natures...

But I know what I see...

And this Defense ~ both in the Talent, Focus, and Fury of its Starters and in the utterly shocking Depth of Talent we've forged, virtually overnight, it seems ~ has a very real chance of erupting!! Now!!
