DRAFT DAY DISCUSSION The official: Day 2 Patriots Draft Thread

I hoped that we could get two 2010 #2's and two real prospects. We did better. Tate is a top talent who is a potential starter and returner. McKenzie is a 3-4th round prospect.

Of the rest, I expected little help. Ornberger seems like the annual OL for someone else.

McKenzie was a second rounder on most boards. We took him at the end of round 3.

George Bussey is the pick. Anyone have some insight on him?

Walk on former TE, mean BB this he can be taught up as one of our project OL.

George Bussey - 2009 Draft Tracker - SI.com

Position: G
Class: Senior
School: Louisville
Conference: Big East
Ht., Wt.: 6-3.5, 301
40 Time: 5.23

BIOGRAPHY: Former walk-on who started for three seasons at both guard and tackle. All-Conference selection ever since his sophomore campaign.

POSITIVES: Productive, wide-bodied blocker with surprising ability in space. Blocks with good lean, gets leverage on opponents, and shows the ability to turn them off the ball run blocking. Keeps his feet moving, quickly gets his hands into defenders and effectively places them. Stays square and walls opponents from the action with good position blocking. Moves well on his feet, shows footwork sliding off the edge, and he can hit a moving target blocking in motion. Plays heads-up football.

NEGATIVES: Overweight and must improve his blocking balance. Needs to develop a nasty streak.

ANALYSIS: Bussey has done a terrific job since walking onto the Louisville football team. He possesses the body type to be used at guard in the NFL, and he has the skills to play in a zone-blocking scheme. Bussey must properly condition himself and improve his playing strength to make a roster at the next level.

PROJECTION: Free Agent

Got the size and go on youtube and watch him throw. Great arm.

Just looked up "Boltus Hartwick" and "Jason Boltus." Got nada.

So now we have two Practice Squad guards for camp that we can train to play somewhere else.

Interesting. Sounds like a guy who can get out on the screen and block in space: exactly what the Pats like. T/G versatility helps too.

SF take Nate Davis. I just looked at the NFL analysis, and he is compared to Alex Smith!!!

Did SF not learn first time round Suppose but different in draft position though

Well, technically I suppose that's true, but that's not the point. The trade of #23 basically led to the acquisition of two extra picks, one in the second round and one in the third. Could they have picked Butler anyway and also picked Oher? Sure. But then you're giving up the two second-rounders next year, basically.

What the Pats are saying is that they would rather have Butler, Chung, Brace, Vollmer, Tate and a 2010 second-rounder than Oher, Chung, Butler and Brace. The question going forward is how much better than Vollmer will Oher be, and will that difference outweigh the contribution of Tate and the 2010 2nd-rounder.

Maybe Oher will be a Pro Bowler, but if Vollmer is even a serviceable tackle it's almost sure to be a good deal for New England.

But it is exactly the point. As for the picks for next year, those came today, which is why it's "making up" for yesterday in my eyes.

We're at that stage of the draft.

Trades after round 5 are relatively rare.

I'd LIKE to see something happen, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

You can't really fault the Pats if they end up having to use all their remaining picks b/c they can't trade up/out.

Why do you think they will be playing somewhere else?? The may not be ready now...and another team may not pick them up...so??? Just curious..

The Pats obviously have a totally different way of grading offensive linemen than anyone else.....other teams or commercial draft raters.
