And yet another Jets troll makes an appearance. How cute! They must be running in packs now.

I came to check on Mankins and Brady's contract situations.

Are they signed for huge money yet?

Again, the Patriots don't need their tight ends to be their #2 receiver the way the Jets did last year. Crumpler can block, and will catch a few passes. That's what the system calls for. Keller can catch passes, and will block on occasion, that's what's needed in New York. However, if you're going to play "reasonable expectations", that allows the Patriots fans to have "reasonable expectations" about their choice of McCourty over Wilson. After all, it's two rookies playing the same level on the field (DB), and taken in the first round. I believe that the last time this happened with these two teams, It was Mayo v. Gholston, and we know how that matchup has turned out.

Yup Vernon Gholston is a waste of sperm I'll give you that. Just as it allows Patriot fans to have their choice of McCourty over Wilson, that goes vice versa. Let's see what happens on the field.

Darius Butler (2009): 35 tackles, 8 passes defensed, 3 INTs, 91 RY's, 1 TD
Antonio Cromartie (2009): 33 tackles, 10 passes defensed, 3 INT's, 17 RY's, 0 TD's

Cromartie started in all 16 games for the Chargers. Butler started in 5. We've now established that Butler is the more willing and able tackler, is just as much (if not more) of a ballhawk than Cromartie is, and is more dangerous with the ball in his hands afterward. On top of that, Cromartie is said to be as dumb as a rock (couldn't even pick up the FSU playbook) while Butler seems to be pretty bright. Like I said in my original statement, Butler > Cromartie.

We did establish that Butler is more physical but more of a ballhawk? Absolutely not. Based on what? The same amount of picks, 2 less deflections, and is more dangerous with the ball in his hands even though Cromartie has multiple TDs in his career along with the tying the record for longest TD in NFL history on a return(109 yards). Cromartie plays the ball like a WR and has as good hands as any CB in the NFL. When Butler has 10 picks in a season and can pick off Peyton Manning more then 3 times in his career let alone a single half, then we can bring up Butler and his ballhawk skills.

The physical part I completely understand. The ballhawk and more dangerous with the ball makes zero sense. Along with the non coverage stats you brought up covering WRs is a CB jobs #1 priority. Last year Cromartie in a "off year", he played 895 snaps and gave up 45 completions on 79 attempts for a 57% comp%. He also gave up 2 TDs and 545 yards for a 12.1 avg per catch. His 70.9 QB rating against was the 28th lowest in the NFL. Butler on 497 snaps gave up 36 completions on 64 attempts for a 56.3% comp %. He gave up 2 TDs and 497 yards on a 11.9 avg per catch. His 67.6 QB rating against was 20th in the NFL.

If Butler played the same amount of snaps, would it be fair to say he would of gave up more TDs and yards then Cromartie? I think so. More INTs? Probably but regardless one thing no one can take away from Cromartie is his ball skills and return ability so Butler has to EARN that right before we crown him a better ball hawk then Cromartie. Because of his superior athletic ability and size along with his ball hawk and return skills, I'll take Cromartie. Lets see what happens this year.

Wow I am just amazed that this thread is still going on. Amazing

Even excluding Wilson and McCourty, I would still take the Pats secondary as a whole over the Jets'. It's the safety position that swings it for the Pats to me. I think I made a pretty solid argument for Butler over Cromartie though.

The argument of the secondaries should include the scheme the players play in.

Are you taking the Pats secondary over the Jets because of the talent level of the players or because you think the Pats defensive scheme allows the secondary to show and prove better?

You can have a crappy secondary if your pass rush/blitz/QB pressuring is outstanding and they'd look good when they're not. That's what the Jets had last season with all the exotic blitz packages and stuff.

Butler vs Cromartie is an argument only when discussing scheme. Cromarite excels in man coverage moreso than Butler and that is what the Jets will ask of him primarily. So you have to judge Jets scheme Cromartie vs Pats scheme Butler.

Same thing with Wilson vs McCourty. The Jets had Wilson higher on their draft board than McCourty because Wilson (in their view) plays better man-to-man coverage and that is what the Jets prioritize more than anything else for a CB. Simply put the player fits the scheme better. FYI Wilson had 22 reps on the bench press, going to be hard for a receiver to beat that kind of jam off the line.

So the real question is scheme vs scheme. Who wins?

Just proves how viable the Jets are as a threat to the Patriots.
More likely it proves how precious Jets fans are and continue to compare themselves against the benchmark AFC East Patriots.. which is understandable.

Well I think it's both. If this were the Bills fans the Pats fans wouldn't even respond in kind they way they are now.

Can't deny the 800 lb elephant in the room: The Jets are a threat.

I don't see any "the Bills suck" threads. Because that would be akin to beating a starving man with a turkey leg. Just too brutal for words. Plus the thread wouldn't go for this long.

KontradictioN just made you kontradict yourself. Cromartie earns the "better cover corner" since Butler would've given up more yards and TDs, but Cromartie keeps the "better ballhawk" label since he had lots of picks way back when?

no it doesn't..it proves what a bunch of front running sissies the green horde are, inundating a Patriots board with this goo gee gaa gaa puking pablum Jet hysteria...play ring around the rosey at your own green sewerage laden "boards". This is a Patriots board. We play the green scum twice a season. Last time we played the Patriots horrified, humiliated, and destroyed the green pukes. When things change, like when you actually win in the current time frame, come back and run your drooling,Jersey slob moufs...that's all you sub 80 I.Q. trogs know anyway.

Yes, Jets fans should quiver like Patriots fans...

50 page threads exist on every Jets message board with abject thoughts on how successful an aging team was LAST decade.

It's cool to hate a team. It's completely laughable to do so when you fear they may have finally caught up.

2009 Jets playoff record. 2-1 (2 wins on the road)

2009 Patriots playoff record. 0-1 (Blown out at home and booed by their own fans in the 3rd quarter)

Hilarity ensues.

I'm not worried about the Jets in the slightest. I'm more concerned with the Dolphins who are a fundamentally more sound side than the Jets are.

Jets fans want recognition. Jets fans are just following the lead of bleating for respect that their head coach has. Notice the two main sides in the AFC East who aren't crying for respect.

Then again who isn't surprised that there's loud mouths coming from New York.

You should be.

The Dolphins had an amazing run to the AFCCG last season.

They've improved in every facet of their game during the offseason and are set to repeat their upswing. Especially with youthful RB's (similar to the Patriots) and a veteran, boisterous secondary.

The Dolphins are legitimate in all phases, similar to the Patriots.

I can't wait to watch you two duke it out for the division while the Jets watch from the AFCE basement.

Uh..hate to break it to you ,Green Moron..the Patriots got HARDWARE for their record last season. The Rats got humiliated and exposed by Indy after the two "backer inner" so called "wins" and get what they always get these past 41 years...NADA...ZIP...ZILCH...ZERO

I sense sarcasm in this post. I also sense somebody who believes in collecting talent, which is what the Patriots are completely against. All that talent accomplishes nothing if you aren't building a team.

And that Patsfans is the illustration of a Jets fans. Living off the achievements of the 2009/2010 season. Shame it's pre-season 2010/2011 season.

The 2009 postseason, which they were given a free ticket to, and the 2010 postseason, which has been extremely overrated. Yep, it's gonna be a great season!

Either Rex is a better coach than Belichick or our secondary is superior.

Or you could go the crazy route and praise Strickland, Sheppard and Rhodes for the secondaries success...

Your move.

I'll go with C. The Jets bring the house on the majority of defensive plays which forces bad throws which is a bad thing when you have an all-pro CB in Revis. The scheme helps Revis and Revis helps the scheme. Or wait, do you really believe that Rex Ryan is as good of a coach as Belichick?

Joker why are you so upset? It's an off-season football discussion...it's not that serious. Jets fans have Sub 80 I.Q.'s but you're the one posting ''goo gee gaa gaa puking pablum'' in forums. I'm still trying to figure out what makes this all so serious for you.

wanna see "too funny"......?
