The gadget play was primarily an FU for Smith

When Smith opened his mouth about the guarantee I think BB devised a plan that would make Smith embarrased and horribly beaten and that gadget play when Moss threw the ball back to Brady was designed for Smith for an FU and to prove he is not very good.

Since the Patriots RARILY use those gadget plays I definately think it was sent out in play and meant to surprise and fool smith and show he is not very smart, especially when opening his mouth about stuff he cannot control.

I would be very surprised to see another gadget play again this year, although the game with the Jets may be too unpredictable to know what the team is going to do to embarrass Mangini

Both Brady and BB have said otherwise. It was in fact put into the Ravens game plan but not used then. And it's been practiced all year, or at least for many weeks.

Point of fact, the play was called "Raven." Nice story, not factual. Too much is being made of this Smith comment. Way too much.

I don't think BB does much more than just give a brief inspection of the offensive gameplan each week. He might sniff it for errors and give a little input, but I believe the offense is somebody else's problem, to him.

It was primarily a touchdown.

Kind of silly to think otherwise, isn't it?

You can't be serious.

Totally serious. Prolly a little hyperbolic, but certainly my opinion. If I had to bet, I'd say BB spends 80-85% of his time and energy on the defense. On offense, I'd guess he is more of a supervisor only.

Yeah, it's amazing how much play this has gotten. Who gives a flying f what guys on the other team say? It's meaningless. Why anyone on the patriots would pay any attention to it is unbelievable.

the whole process is started by McDaniels and the O coaches, with the input of BB who sees it and makes changes if necessary then it is reviewed by #12 before it is implemented on Wednesday.. it is more democratic and detailed than one might believe.

Besides what others have said -- it's been practiced all year and the Pats themselves contradict you -- your THEORY (which you announce as if it's a fact, which it is not) makes little sense.

A DB should be embarassed when he misreads things and gets beaten by 10 yards, as Smith was on Moss' 2nd TD. But a DB shouldn't be particularly embarassed when beaten by a gadget play. They were fooled by an unusual play designed to trick, a play that they never practiced for and quite possibly will never see again during their career.

I believe that Brady referenced to that during his post game press conference as a play they have practiced a lot but-"it never works."

Nah. Teams have that type of play in their arsenal all season. We had a similar play at Michigan called Seminole.

Per Brady and Belichick interviews on WEEI:

1. put in for the Ravens game, as others have said.

2. practiced "maybe 5 or 6 times". Not over many times over many weeks.

3. after the first team, the scout team had it figured out, so it never really worked again in practice.

4. name of the play is just "Raven".

I believe he meant that (Pittsburgh) D rarely/never practices defending that particular style of play. Not that the Pats O just made it up for this game.

That said, I'm sure that first team Ds routinely get this sort of play thrown at them, without warning, in practice for this very reason.

You would hope that the scout team would figure out that there really aren't that many other good reasons to throw a lateral to Moss behind the LOS.
