As I believe they mentioned on the broadcast:

The defense going back to the SB, so 8 games, has allowed 30 points. 30 points in a half season of football in the NFL. I don't care who they have played it's still the NFL.

Patriots opponents this season average 19.6 PPG against their other opponents. The Pats defense is allowing 3.9 PPG, 27 points in 7 games. Not counting the 3 TD's allowed by the offense and ST's. Again I don't care who you are playing 3 TD's and 2 FG's, allowed, one game shy of a half of season is unlike anything the league has ever seen in the SB era.

In comparison the 2000 Ravens allowed 8.4 PPG for the season, which we all know is stupid as well. They had four shutouts that season and allowed more than ten points four times. Their offense gave up two pick sixes.

Our defense has technically pitched three shutouts in 7 games.

I was going to go through the 85 Bears season, but they allowed 188 points in the regular season with only two shutouts during the regular season.

What I love about this defense is that they seem to understand the historical significance of the year they're having. They played just as hard in the 4th quarter as the 1st despite having a 33 point lead. I wouldn't be surprised if Belichick's 26-0 confab with the whole defense was to remind them of their historical opportunity and to not let up...

Currently, the defense (not including ST) has scored 23 points and given up 27 on the year. That means they're averaging a -0.57 ppg net.

Basically, if the Pats offense can kick one field goal in a game, they statistically should win.

I actually forgot about the 2002 Bucs. I'll take my 10 lashings in private.

I've known this was the best defense in this sport's history several weeks ago. Why is this still a shock for some?

I love how consistently disrespectful they are of the opposition passing attacks with all their Zero Coverage. They're saying "Hey, if you execute you can have a 80 yard TD. But you won't, because you suck and we know you suck and now you know that we know you suck." It's been available all season, and they've only been burned once, and that once the CB tipped the pass and the WR got lucky.

The 85 Bears D didn't turn on the switch until about week 7 or so when they went up to Candlestick and obliterated the defending champs who also manhandled them in the NFCCG. After that, they were lights out save for the famous MNF game in Miami (and proof that stubbornly sticking with your base D in the face of bad matchups with your LBs in coverage was ill-advised).

These Pats OTOH appeared to flip the switch in SB53 and carried it forward into this year thanks to continuity in the secondary. Eighteen picks is unreal.

    Regards,
    Chris

What was the stat they showed late yesterday. The opponents had 91 offensive drives against our defense and came away with a TD 3 times. That is stupid. It must be more like 95 drives now because they showed it I think midway through the 4th.

Similarly, I remember the '00 Ravens slowly getting better and better as the year wore on. I remember not expecting them to do anything in the playoffs...but they kept winning and winning until they were handed a Lombardi.

Furthermore, they also sucked and were overrated and were fortunate that Berry started Eason.

Y'all should take a look at the 76 Steelers.

Greatest defensive stretch in the Super Bowl era.

    Started 1-4 and allowed 22ppg
Finished 10-4 and over the last 9 reg season games allowed 4 points a game.

As the weather turns worse, usually defenses benefit, unless there are injury/depth problems.

Much better offenses are coming soon on the schedule, but the depth makes me think NE can stay awesome on D. Not 4 ppg awesome, but at least staying #1 in ppg allowed.

Patriot have allowed 48 points in first 7 games. 85 bears allowed 59 in their first 3.

LOL, as much a homer as I am, that game was not winnable.

The Bears, though, were fortunate that nobody in the league had the personnel to play them like Miami did. Forget establishing the run first, in 70s/80s fashion. That wasn't going to work vs. the Bears, one they got their mojo midseason. Today's NFL is so much different.
