Part of it is that the calendar this year calls for the latest Labor Day possible. Up until a number years ago (maybe 7?), the season began on Labor Day week-end. I believe one year when Labor Day was on Sept. 1, the first game was actually on August 31.

Part of it for me is the fact that in many ways the offseason feels like it began around 1:14 p.m. EST on 9/7/2008.
 
Plus, the damned season starts on a Monday night this year.
