The 2013 Prospect Thread

If that's true, he could be the most underrated prospect of the draft. I still haven't seen much Tulsa film this season, but last year, he was all bone but incredibly rangy with long arms that could deflect lots of passes. He added 20lbs. If he can lay the wood, he should be a future pro bowler with terrific ball skills and athleticism

It is true. He had 3 or 4 big hits. Not even five minutes into the game Pilland threw to Maxwell on a crossing route and right as Maxwell turned up field McCoil blew him up and knocked the ball out for an incompletion. Houston's skill player aren't very big though. I wonder if he'd be as physical if it was a tight end running across the middle. He is still boney, but looks a little thicker than last season.

From the video you posted of him he didn't look great, but you could tell there was a lot of potential there. It looks like he's realizing it, but I still want to see more of him. I want to see him get tested in coverage.

Great find, Mackenzie.

Good read on Jesse Williams

Evaluating Jesse Williams | Draft Breakdown

Very much warming to him as a pick in the first round.

The only thing I don't like about Williams is his flexibility. He looks really tight at times and doesn't have the length to make up for it.

Right now the guys who I would consider taking in the first round:

OL: Cooper, Warmack, maybe Jones
DT: Lotulelei, Hankins, Nix, Richardson, Williams, maybe Short, maybe Jenkins
DE: Montgomery, Mingo, Werner, Jordan, Ansah
LB: Ogletree
DB: Banks, Milliner

Risers

Cornellius Carradine, DE - Florida State

Florida State senior defensive end Cornellius "Tank" Carradine made this list a few weeks ago, but he deserves mention once again as he continues to ascend up draft boards around the league. Adding a sack last Thursday in the win over Virginia Tech, Carradine passed teammate Bjoern Werner for the ACC-lead in sacks with 9.0 through 10 games. He also leads the Seminoles in tackles (64) and ranks second on the team in tackles for loss (10.0). Against the Hokies, Carradine was outstanding and made his presence felt against both the run and the pass. He is a flexible athlete and looks fluid with his movements, using excellent lateral footwork to sidestep and flatten to close on the quarterback. Carradine plays with very good pad level and stays low to the ground, using his hands to rip and tear past the initial blocker with good bend. He sets the edge very well and has shown much improved discipline to read the backfield and make quick decisions in the run game, obviously becoming more aware with added experience. Carradine has also proved to be reliable away from the line of scrimmage with the range to chase down ballcarriers -- evidence by his team-leading tackle total. He originally had scouts thinking top-100 with his surprising play earlier this season, but based on his consistent performance as a senior and NFL potential, the first round is more of a realistic landing spot for Tank.

What do you guys think of Cordarrelle Patterson? Watching the Missouri game made me think he could be a Percy Harvin like player in the NFL.

I'd kill to have a Percy Harvin.

BB likes top notch athleticism from his WR's so I think he's a good shout. Worries me a little that he's only getting 2-3 catches per game, most games, but he's certainly interesting.

It's more like 4, and I'm sure Hunter takes some potential catches away. Bray is usually locked onto Hunter. Patterson also has 23 rushes on the season, which led me too the Harvin comparison. You are the receiver guru though.

Hardly but thankyou anyway.

A couple of big games knock his average up, but most games he's at the 3 mark. I like him if the expectations are set at the right leve - that he'll be a returner and a bit of a gimmick player early, occasionally lining up at WR (Jeff Demps?). I don't think he's got the route skills to be a regular early as a go to guy and that worries me with our recent track record with young and rookie receivers - can he get Brady's trust? That's why I tend to look for good receiving skills first and foremost but I do think BB likes the right measurables for the position so Patterson scores well there.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be very happy with Patterson in the second round, I just think he'd be too big a risk in the first. Seen talk that he is planning on coming out.

Harvin is smaller but quicker than Patterson. Patterson is still spectacular at making defenders miss in the open field, but mostly in a Josh Cribbs manner, not a Harvin manner. Right now, Cribbs is a good comparison.

And as a receiver starting day one?

Nonsense. What's your opinion of Deandre Hopkins?

Actually, how would rank the receivers you like?

I love DeAndre Hopkins, quite possibly my No 1 receiver (close with Williams). I haven't mocked him to us because he won't fall as low as the lower 2nd I don't think.

In terms of the receivers I like so far only, ie not a full ranking:

1. Terrance Williams (just)

Fast, tall and has wiggle. Really like the fit for the Patriots system. Only worry is that he tends to catch close to his body. Haven't really seen him pluck balls. Is a good blocker and runs option routes. I like the Baylor factor too.

2. DeAndre Hopkins

Good speed, very fluid, good routes, excellent hands. Sammy Watkins? Pah! Hopkins is the better WR right now although doesn't have Watkins' explosion. Still athletic enough however.

3. Markus Wheaton

Stedman Bailey will go higher but I marginally prefer Wheaton. Wheaton is professional and plays the position almost to perfection. He's fast enough to get separation deep, has excellent hands and runs really good routes. Also does well as a blocker and is a leader on the OSU offense - great clubhouse guy. Only knock is that he doesn't have perfect size. He's this years Marvin Jones for me.

4. Stedman Bailey

Another ideal fit for the Patriots system - gets separation, very good after the catch, gets deep but can run screens too. Nice fit in the slot. Is the better receiver than Tavon Austin (who might work better in other ways).

5. Quinton Patton

Not as high on him as I once was but he's another with good hands and catches both the deep ball and runs screens. Very good in open field. He's still good, but for me, the others have opened a gap.

Haven't got a feel for yet: Justin Hunter, Robert Woods, Cordarelle Patterson, Da'Rick Rogers, Aaron Dobson

As of right now, based on a combination of need and value, I believe that the New England's best option in the first round right now is...
Jonathan Cooper

Missouri DT Sheldon Richardson, who has been steadily climbing draft boards and who could be this year's Nick Fairley/Fletcher Cox, has been suspended for this week's game against Syracuse for missing a class multiple times and refusing to go through the specified punishment:

That may have some effect on his draft stock.

MarQueis Gray from Minnesota intrigues me, similar to Edelman in that he is a QB to WR conversion, but also is playing WR in college. Good size 6-4 245, started the year at QB, got hurt and was moved to WR.

Hmmm. What do I think of this?

Yeah, I wouldn't mind him. I would never mind a player to protect Brady, especially not one as good as Cooper.

I was about to post that Richardson seems like the kind of player that will make a few mistakes between now and the draft. I don't think this will be last mistake he makes.

I love Gray, but he's a much better QB than WR. I'm always looking for the next stud QB that could be undrafted. Right now I think Gray is that stud.

Do you think guard will be the biggest need? I'm not sure it will be, not anymore. Thomas has be really good lately. Better than Wendell in my opinion. Wendell gets killed in pass protection.

I somewhat wish the needs were clearer. There are several, but none of them are glaring.

Exactly. As Mackenzie said, he's the best combination of need and value. I've maintained from the start, without being position or need specific, Cooper is likely to be the BPA if he's there when we pick and that's why he's still my #1.

But as for need, will Mankins be playing this weekend? He's starting to miss more and more games. Hate to say it, but is it a case of tic-toc, tic-toc?

Excellent Manx!

I think when a player is wide open they tend to be more conservative when catching the ball. Do you think Williams' body catches are because he's so open all the time? Do you think he's a first rounder?

Do you think Hopkins would be a good Patriot? Do you think he would pick up the offense? I wonder because he kind of looks like a overly confident thug.

Wheaton is a good player and currently undervalued. I wonder why he's used in the slot so often. I think I hate his offensive coordinator and quarterback. He's fast, but I don't think he's as fast as some people are saying.

I really like Rogers. Athletically I don't think he's Julio Jones like you once mentioned, but I think he's close. He's probably more like Dez Bryant. I wish I had some games of him so I didn't have to rely on internet videos. They just aren't reliable. You can get 100 times more information by watching entire games.

I'm interested in Patterson. Like I said he's used in a similar to Percy Harvin. He doesn't have the same track record, but could still be a good prospect.

Woods is definitely a good player and a good value. I think he's the most pro ready, but doesn't have the highest ceiling even though he might have the highest floor. Marquis Lee is an elite player and while I think he holds down Woods' numbers a little that's not a knock on Woods.
