The 2012 season: the Jets [Mod Edit: STILL] suck

Here's a new one: Rex says he would "welcome" being fired unless Woody "fixes" the offense:

“If Woody’s not willing to do what it takes to fix the team, then (Ryan) knows he’s better off being fired,” a team source said. “If Woody is willing to eat some money and spend to get us out of this mess, then it’s worth staying.”

“The million-dollar question is how much dead money is Woody willing to absorb for 2013 with front office, coaches and players?” a league source familiar with the situation said. “If Woody’s not willing to spend, then (Ryan) would want out. He’d be a lame duck. Anybody would want out.”

Actually, it's probably a heck of a lot more than a million dollars.

Rex is apparently giving out ultimatums. Clean up my mess or else. What an assclown. This is why anyone who says he's still a good HC is daffy. The Ravens had it right, ceiling is DC. Doesn't understand cap or business end of the equation let alone 2 of the 3 phases of the game. He wanted Sanchise. He coddled him. He wanted Sporano. He was down with Tebow because he didn't do his due diligence. He cheerleaded every signing and drafting Tannenbaum ever made.

That 2009 team dragged him to the AFCC game after he'd given up on them because he couldn't even do simple math... The 2011 team quit on him haven seen enough. The 2012 team was DOA out of the gate. And now he's like a big bank demanding a government bailout. Give me what I need that I wasn't aware I needed for the last 4 years or I'd rather take my talents elsewhere... There is no I in team moron.

Hopefully Woody is too cheap and dumb to call his bluff and he's left to stew in his own juices for another season before he lands back in the coordinator ranks and on a less talented team than the ones whose coatails he's risen on. Mangini left him a solid defense. Ozzie handed him the keys to a well established one. That he even thinks he would get another shot at HCing after the circus car he drove into the swamp just underscores how self absorbed and delusional he is.

Beat you to it by 6 minutes.

Rex apparently wants more "control":

Ryan apparently wants to fire offensive coordinator Tony Sparano and find a better candidate to replace him, but it’s unclear whether Johnson is willing to spend the money to buy out Sparano’s contract and hire another offensive coordinator. It’s also unclear whether Ryan also wants Johnson to commit to a lot of money to upgrade the quarterback position, either by cutting Mark Sanchez and eating the guaranteed money the team still owes him, or by signing a veteran free agent, or both. But the quarterback position obviously needs to be better than it was this year.

There have been many reports that Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum will either be fired or demoted after the season. Ryan may also want more say in the personnel decisions after that front office shakeup takes place, or at least some say in the hiring of whoever would make the decisions.

Report: Rex Ryan would rather get fired than accept the status quo | ProFootballTalk

All those moves that he lauded - Sparano, Tebow, Sanchez - are now someone else's responsibility. Given how Rex has mucked things up so far, I'd love to see what he can do if he's given more control.

Isn't he just a piece of work. Definitely his fathers son. It's all about the Ryans. Woody's probably too stupid to call his bluff. He's a lame duck either way and you don't invest in a lame duck. Last thing you want to do is spend a lot of capital on a crap shoot. Just digs a deeper hole for the next administration to dig out of. Johnson's own ego will probably keep him from persuing the correct course. He'll try to half ass his way around that. That was the read BB had on him a decade ago. He's all about the headlines and splashes and retaining a voice in/control over matters that he has no knowledge of or experience in. Trust fund owner posterboy...

Nothing is stopping Rex from quitting... Oh yeah except he doesn't get paid.

Good ownership makes a huge difference. And a big part of it is getting your ego out of the way.

The funny thing is, Rex is half right. If Woody wanted to "fix" this mess, the best thing he could do would be to fire a bunch of people and eat a bunch of cap space and dead money. The Jets would be lame ducks for a year or so, but then they'd be competitive. And if he could bring in some real football people who knew what they were doing and let them do it, with some room to work, and a consistent plan.

But it will never work. Especially not in New York, with the constant pressure to win now and the media scrutiny. And not with Woody as the owner, catering to the media circus and the "headlines and splashes", as you put it. He doesn't have the guts or the brains to invest in a long term plan. He'd have to fire himself as part of the housecleaning to make it all work, and maybe move the team to another city.

Any misguided respect for Ryan should go down the drain as he tries to fob off responsibility for HIS selection of Sparano and HIS unqualified support of Sanchez and HIS failure to pay any meaningful football attention to the offense on the befuddled owner. Pathetic.

I heard a bit of his press conference yesterday. He managed to throw McElroy (for "lying" to the medical staff) and Tebow ("not happy" about not starting) under the bus, too.

How he can keep the reputation of being a players' coach with those cowardly self serving moves amazes me. Then again it's the press who create fictions to support their worldview narratives.

As a side note, there's a pretty good discussion on TGG about trading Revis.

There are a few smart posters on there who "get it" about where their team is and the work required to rebuild. Once you get past the "I wUdNt tRaDe hIm 4 eVa" posts that is.

I will say this, there's quite a few on there who don't seem to grasp that 28 year old CB's coming off knee surgery don't necessarily hold the value of 2 first round picks plus.....

I think the NYJ situation for Rex will end up being like the Cleveland and NYJ situations were for Belichick.

Belichick made some really poor choices, some great choices that he handled poorly (Kosar) and some really ****ty ones (like how he was coach of the Jets for a day to get around tampering charges)

Rex has shown he's great when he's winning but he can't control a team when things go poorly. The Sanchez/Manning/Tebow situation was handled about as poorly as it possibly could and he was a straight up idiot to say 'Mark Sanchez will be the QB of the Jets as long as I'm here.'

I know he was trying to support the guy but Sanchez is the epitome of a guy who needed to be pushed to prove he could lead a team not have it given to him.

In my fantasy world this would be happening right now. Tomorrow there would be a series of billboards and full page ads pleading for Woody to keep Rex. Then a few days later it would come to light that the ads and billboards were paid for by a subsidiary of Kraft Enterprises. . Either that of paid for by a Pats big Pats fan or booster club.

One thing for certain. If you are a Pats fan there is NO WAY that you don't want Rex Ryan to remain the Jets HC FOREVER.

@BrianCoz: While addressing the team today, Rex cried at one point according to people in the room. #NYJ

how many times in the last four years have I posted that this mutt is psychologically crippled?

he should be the star of "Spot The Manic Depressive" on the game show network

I have to admit that were I to find myself working with the clowns in the Jets locker room I'd cry

LOL. Now they're bringing in the trick shot Norwegian kicker for a tryout. What a side show this disgrace of a team is...

You won't be laughing when Jeff Fischer and the Competition Committee make a trick kick worth 4 points next season and Goodell approves to achieve balance and "fairness" in the AFC East

OK, calling the NY Post headline for tomorrow: Tears of a clown

Hah - -I can see it now: One extra point for making a keep from either outside hash mark outside the 30; Pats win the Super Bowl by a point taking advantage of the rule; Fisher changes the rule the following year.

So..here's the little spoiled fatboy turned NFL head coach bawling to the press and of course, once again reveals how owned he is by everything Patriot...

Emotional Rex denies report that he wants out if Jets don't change offense

""That's total garbage, that's garbage," Ryan said. "That's not the case at all. The premise that I'd rather go somewhere else to coach somebody's football team. No way. That's not it. I'd rather coach my players and my team. New England Patriots, anybody else, I don't care. I want this team. This is my team."
