Revis might hold out again ....

Darrelle Revis needs to make a decision - NFL Nation Blog - ESPN

Will New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis hold out or not? That's been an offseason question in New York for months.

The Pro Bowl corner, who has two years and $13.5 million left on his contract, continues to send mixed messages. When asked Thursday by the New York media if he will show up on time for training camp, Revis responded, “I don't know. That's all I'm telling you. I don't know if I am or I'm not. I told you that a while back."

Revis
It's understandable that Revis is tired of answering the same question. But what Revis doesn't understand is this is a problem of his own doing.

I read it that way the first time as well........but I think his point is a 65 year old man should be mature enough not to verbally insult a 20 year old kid (.........or anyone for that matter).

oh yeah??...well, let's take this outside and I'll show you what THIS 60 year old Joker has for ya' ,sonny...where's my cane?....

revis is a punk

if he holds out the jets will cave and give in..they are a weak organization

The Green Beans really missed the boat not doing "Hard Knocks" again this year, especially with another Bevis holdout looming. I'd buy an HBO subscription just to see that circus unfold along with the regular cast of miscreants and Special Guest Star Tim Tebow.

If the football gods have any sense of humor at all they'll fix it so Bevis holds out. I SO hope that happens. :singing::singing::singing:

I remember him saying he Would hold out right after he signed a new contract after holding out. Hes a great talent but hes not worth the disruption he causes.

If he holds out you can blame Wrecks for perpetually empowering this prima donna by calling him the best player in the league.

Yup, just the opposite of what we see in NE.

Just last week Bob Kraft fired a shot across Wes Welker's brow saying that while the Pats want Welker to retire a Pat, it takes two to make a deal.

The Pats won't be held up by anyone, while the Rats keep failed draft picks, disgruntled cancers, and over-the-hill veterans.

Read Rat messageboards and it is comical to read their discussions about prospective trades, like for Santonio Holmes and Revis; they seem to expect to get top value for players like this as if their behavior and contract demands will have no effect on their value to another team.

"Sure Santonio is a cancer who quit on us and has an exhorbitant contract, but we can trade our problem to another team and they will will gladly pay through the nose to help us out of our situation."

I'm not sure how much wrecks inflated Bevis's ego, but every little bit helps.

It's not about inflating his ego as much as the head coach writing checks with his mouth that management doesn't want to cash. Bevis's agent gets plenty of ammo from statements like that: "You say my guy is the best player in the league. He should be paid accordingly."

Yep, didn't think about that way. All Bevis's agent has to do is play Jabba's words back to him and tanny. Jabba never thinks before he speaks.

Not that any accurate information is appreciated in regards to the Jets but here is the reason it is very unlikely Revis holds out.

Can Revis Hold Out?

Well any player can hold out, but the question is why would Revis? For 2012, Revis has guarantees of $8.5 million in salary and a holdout would risk those. Rarely are players giving up what is guaranteed money for a few extra dollars. More importantly the Jets have built holdout protection into his contract. Revis’ contract is actually a 7 year contract that voids into a 4 year deal if Revis does not hold out and miss any offseason team activities during the next 2 years. Revis has hefty bonuses attached to every stage of attendance with $1 million in workout bonuses and another $1 million in reporting bonuses these next two seasons. This is not like Cameron Wake making $615,000 from the Dolphins for attending workouts and giving up a $50,000 bonus by missing workouts. $2 million of lost money is a giant chunk of change.

More so, when Revis holds out he loses the ability to void the contract after 2013. That leaves the Jets with the ability to control his rights for $3 million a season from 2014-2017. Quite frankly Revis has no leverage in this situation. If he holds out he would lose $2 million in bonuses and, assuming an expected average annual salary of $11 million a year on a new deal, an addition $8 million a season while he is stuck on the old contract. That’s $26 million in potential loses with the assumption the Jets blink first. Why would they? The team was 8-8 and could have missed the playoffs with or without Darelle last season.

Cool. What other rationalizations can you conjure to make your circus train-wreck of a team seem less than doomed to its 44th consecutive year of futility?

The "Sanchize!!!" and the "Chosen One " will mesh perfectly!!...Dreamy Murk will take all snaps from center as the QB and "Chosen One" will play the Sparano tried and true wildcat for ten snaps a game...between them they'll complete over 80% of their passes!!! Bevis would never miss this!!!! I got a good feeling about THIS season!!! J=E=T=S...Mets Met...oh wait...Jets Jets Jets!!!...

BTW...Tunes...you gotta check this out...green child abuse..."it's really tough to be a Jets fan, I know" says Mommy to the young Jet fan...heh...this is hilarious in a sick sort of way

It's Tough Bein' a New York Jets Fan - YouTube

a Jet fan responds...

I wish I could say it gets better, kid, but it doesn't. It really doesn't. The worst part is, they will drag you back in. The jets will rattle off a series of wins and be right in the conversation come the end of the season. You obviously have the entire wild card scenario broken down so you know how hard that will be, but they'll do it anyway. You'll think "oh, man, they're gonna do it. They're gonna come all the way back and get into the playoffs and finally get to the Super Bowl." They'll probably get into the playoffs.

Then the Jets will rip your heart out, throw it on the ground, spit on it and jump on it over and over and over again. I hope for your sake that you at least have the sense to be a Yankees fan rather than a Mets fan, too.

And mom—what the hell? Not cool.

Best worst team ever...not even close

I'm glad Scott's there to keep Goodell in check. He'd be running amuck, fining and suspending people left and right, if not for Scott!

He would be holding out in order to get a new contract that doesn't have those conditions. You presume that he will hold out, get nothing and then come back with his tail between his legs and accept that the ability to void is now gone. After the Jets bent over for him last time? Not likely. On the other hand if the Jets refuse to renegotiate, we gets traded and gets a new contract.
The 'hold out proofing' in that contract is a sham.

There are a few flaws in this argument:

1.) If Revis is serious about holding out well into the season, he doesn't care if the Jets exercise this clause in his contract because it will become irrelevant when he gets a new deal.

2.) Tannebaum may be too afraid to exercise it anyway. After last year, he is on a bit of a hot seat. His drafts since 2007 have been mediocre at best with his biggest draft pick since then (Sanchez) being on the hot seat himself. The Santonio Holmes new contract looks to be a huge mistake. The Jets are heading in the wrong direction unless they turn it around this year. Tannebaum will likely be on the chopping block if the Jets finish sub .500.

That said, if Tannebaum exercises that clause in the contract, he can kiss Revis goodbye until week 10 of the season when he has to come back to accrue the season. The Jets' defense is likely to fall apart without Revis. This could cost Tannebaum his job even if he wins the war with Revis.

If the Jets were good last year, the Jets would have a lot more leverage. Unfortunately, Tannebaum's job is on the line. Yes, if Revis holds out, he potentially loses a lot of money, but Tannebaum could lose his job. Tannebaum, if he is smart, knows he doesn't win if Revis has a lengthy hold out into the season which makes Revis' deal a long term team friendly deal. He will never benefit from it if the Jets go 6-10 because of a Revis holdout.

That's basically what Revis and his agent are deciding right now. Can they push it so far that the Jets cave and give him a new deal anyway. What is working for him is that appears the Jets have a hard schedule the first month. If the Jets go 1-3 or 0-4, Tannebaum might cave and give Revis a deal because he knows his job is on the line.

I think if Revis exercises the clause in the contract, they basically lose Revis for the season (probably forever) without a new deal. He will sit out until week 10 and probably not work very hard to get into football shape when he comes back.

People forget that Revis has his uncle Sean Gilbert advising him. Gilbert sat out a year because he wanted a blockbuster deal and the following year he got traded and made even more money than he was asking for originally.

Yes, in theory, the Jets hold all the cards. In reality, Revis has more leverage than it looks. I would say that right now the Jets have most of the leverage, but as the season goes along Revis could get a lot more if Tanny starts worrying about his job.
