Technical question on passing game

question for all you x/o's experts..i dont know much technically about football
but those short cross routes which brown runs...seems like we used to run those a lot in the past. Any reason we cant run them anymore ? are defenses playing us such or we dont have players. ? i only see brown running consistently and the middle of the field passing this yr has been down and quite predictable with only watson going up the middle ..

I used that play a lot in NFL 2k3 - the formation was my base offense and my first option with that version of the game, but in subsequent years they changed the user interface and I couldn't find the play.

my guess is that Madden either doesn't have the play or it's buried somehow in the game, so that whoever is calling the plays for the Patriots can't find it consistently. it can be extremely frustrating.
