Taking Christian Barmore was a gamble.

I agree he is a bit meh with his MNF commentary, but most of my experience with him was as a frequent guest on the Paul Finebaum show some years back (8-9 years ago??) when Finebaum hosted his show in Birmingham Alabama and mostly talked about the SEC and especially Alabama and Auburn. That was back before I really embraced Podcasts, and so for listening entertainment on the hour long drive home from work it was either NPR or Paul Finebaum on the radio, and Finebaum more often than not. I have to say that Booger McFarland was an absolute hoot on that show, he was very unscripted and told all sorts of entertaining (and borderline lurid) stories about the old days, mostly his days at LSU. I'm surprised he didn't become a radio talk show host, that seemed to be his real sweet spot, he was great on that radio show.
He has a personality. I like him.

I worry only about two things with Barmore. His weight and conditioning (I bet he doesn’t pass the Pat’s test 1st time). Talent wise I have zero worries.
Wtf?

I love when some idiot "journalist" looking for clicks begins a relly stupid narrative that gets echoed endlessly.
THIS is the guy you're worried about? THIS interior defensive lineman won't pass his conditioning tests?

Really?

I'm fine with Barmore being a run-stuffer in his rookie year. The rest is a coaching issue. He has the talent.

Godchaux is the run-stuffer. Barmore is the interior pass-rush specialist, who could become a whole lot more. Think: Chris Jones.

I could see Godchaux, Anderson, and Guy on 1st and 2nd, with Wise, Winovich, Barmore on 3rd and >5.

Step in front of either one of those dudes you ain't getting up for a while.

Deus, there is no question that at Alabama Barmore's role was a designated interior pass rusher and disruptor. Alabama runs a classic 3-4 defense, and in the past (much like the Seymour Patriots) the three linemen maintain gap discipline and attempt to penetrate the pocket (often very successfully) while the outside linebackers provide much of the pass rush. Unlike the Patriots, Saban has not deviated from the 3-4, but in recent years he has transitioned from big behemoths on the line (e.g., Terrance Cody) to more athletic players like Quinnen Williams. And, more than almost any team Alabama rotates their defensive linemen in and out to keep them fresh. Nevertheless, Alabama 3-4 Defensive linemen are supposed to maintain much discipline at the line while pushing inward so that the linebackers can swoop in for plays.

Barmore didn't really fit that classic mold very well, and as a result he only started 5 games at Alabama. I was worried that his inconsistent play in the past was effort related, but doing a bit of research that doesn't reportedly seem to be the case, he evidently is very high effort and he injected energy into the defense both on the field and in the locker room (especially late in his third year) And once he started to put it together he was an absolutely dominant pass rusher, he simply destroyed good offensive lines like Notre Dame and Ohio State. So, that is good and promising. If nothing else I think he promises to add an important high energy pass rush element into the defensive line, hopefully early on.

When it came to rush defense, for some reason until late in his third year (at least) he was constantly zigging when he was supposed to be zagging, and Saban said as much. Deus, as you say I am hopeful it is a fixable technique, he certainly seems to have natural ability. But I think this tendency to make errors on run plays (especially early on) is what has led to some of the draft criticism. Some critics interpreted it as not being "coachable". Some like Warren Sapp (who I didn't realize was a member of Mensa himself) has suggested that he isn't smart. It sounds like the natural ability is there, and the effort and hard work is there (according to Saban), so I am hopeful that perhaps he is simply raw and unpolished a bit. He didn't play varsity football until his senior year in high school. He redshirted his freshman year. He started only 5 games during his second and third years. So: he doesn't really have a ton of starting experience.

As you say any player is a risk, one only has to look at the statistics. However, I think his upside is really high, certainly as a disruptive pass rusher. What would be a real bonus would be if, with experience and hard work, he is able to fix his run defense technique and become a factor there also, we could certainly use a boost in the run defense.
It's his footwork & patience (has to learn to show colors, peek) mainly. Bama actually took him out on run downs. He wants to play behind the los which is fine but he has to be content with a 1-2 yard gain rather than trying to get a TFL. His footwork was also poor at times. Wasted first step, too much in a hurry to beat his man, he would get crossed up down there but was saved by his hands a lot.

He has plenty of work to do all-around. Rushing the passer as well. That's his speciality but he could get better there for sure. Natural feel for where, how to attack. Good at getting in those creases and knifing through the line. + + hands. Too often it's just his "feel" so to speak but he doesn't have the best plan every snap. He wins with a lot of talent little plan or variety. Not a bad thing at all. Footwork is hit or miss at times. Not many snaps against the run. Lots of potential in both areas.

Idk if he'll hit his peak but it's not close to what he is now. Like hes a good pass rusher but could be great. No reason why he couldn't be a very good all-around player. That's up to Bill & co to pull it out of him. Obviously they really like him and didn't think much else of the class. They're basically saying he's the best by a decent margin so I'm super intrigued by that thought.

And he wrecked some of the best OLines in college when it mattered.

I like the pick.

That is the key for me right there. I think the amount of teams that BB would pick people with severe character issues from is down to a handful after the Hernandez debacle. And those will be the ones coached by people he really trusts like Saban, Schiano & co.

He trusted Urban Meyer too, so...

I would trust all of these weasels only as far as I could throw them.

Years ago BB confided to someone that he looked at round 2 as a place to swing for the fences. A place to find a great physical talent who for some reason (injuries character, etc) drops into the 2nd round and you take a chance on him. You sometimes get Gronk and you sometimes get Jordan Richards. Barmore is a classic BB 2nd round hit or miss.

Glitch had No great physical talent anywhere...He was drafted at #64 for his "intangibles", so the comparison to Gronkowski and Barmore doesn't hold.

this does not worry me for the Pats. First, Bama is good enough to rotate defensive players whatever the talent level. Also, the Pats rotate their D-Line a lot especially on passing downs. Barmore has skills on passing downs the other interior D-Lineman on the Pats do not. If he can be effective on obvious passing downs, especially as a rookie, then this is a great 2nd round pick regardless of whether he is on the field on other downs.

Unfortunately, we needed - and still do, of course - a DT for 1st- & 2nd-downs...

Gronk was a talent so great that he proved his value despite a myriad of injuries even in the NFL. So we're now going to talk about Ras-I Dowling on the same level as the TE who'd likely be universally considered the G.O.A.T. at his position had he not lost so much to injury?

I mean, when you went to that comparison, you didn't see how ridiculous it was?
He’s talking about the concept of taking a gamble on blue chip players with injury history’s, not comparing Dowling to Gronk.

I think the niners took a gamble on a kid with limited experience and even that experience came against very weak completion. only Five FCS players were drafted compared to Bama which had 10 players drafted from just the team. SEC saw 65 players drafted. When I look at it through these lense, he was not a gamble. It is not like we mortgage our future to get him.

Bill gave away Two 4th-round picks, who could've helped us in the future, for somebody who might've been available at #46 anyway.

We needed help in our run defense. We drafted the best in the draft.
We most assuredly did Not draft the best run defender in the draft....In fact, one of the picks we gave away in the trade was used to draft The best run defender in the draft.

We addressed defending the run during FA. Barmore is a 3-technique penetrating DT. Pass rusher. In the mold of Cox, Jones, Donald, Buckner etc. Hopefully, he augments his technique, hand skills, repertoire & becomes our contemporary Seymour.

Aside from re-signing Guy, how so?

One of these is not like the others...
