Strategy for Next Season

It's been an interesting and sometimes exciting season. But with the playoffs slipping away, it seems fair to start talking about next year and the strategy for moving forward.

On one hand, there is the steady approach that involves a Cam, another free agent qb bandaid, or a trade for a quarterback with a restructured deal. On the other, we gut the roster after seeing a 7-9/8-8 campaign with aging role players.

My money is on gutting the roster, as another year with Cam will net a 6-10 or worse outcome unless there are some major changes. Do you see Belichick making enough moves to be successful again without a complete overhaul?

We were a couple unfortunate plays away from going 11-5 this year. We will be in a very good cap situation in a league that will have a sellers market among some of the teams.

The defense is a few pieces in the interior of the front seven away from being pretty good. Hopefully we can keep Guy and Butler. The secondary will most likely stay intact.

Add a few pieces on offense, hope Keene and Asiasi make a jump and figure out the QB situation and we are definitely among the teams in the hunt for the playoffs.

The QB situation doesn't need to be some genius, big brain move to bring a big upside player here. Getting someone who is less inconsistent is all that is necessary.

We need to blow up the front seven. We have been embarrassed in run defense way too many times c.
There's enough potential there that an incremental approach - developing what you have, replacing those who don't improve - can work over time.

The receivers? Blow that mess up. (and hire somebody who can assess receiver talent better than Bill can, which oughtta be a cinch.)

The qb? He blew himself up. Nothing left but the post-mortem.

Cant we enjoy this loss with thinking about 2021?
Seems extremely unlikely, short of wedging our heads into an abandoned ostrich hole.

I used to go over to the Jets' board to gloat from time to time. Sentiments like this have been a staple there for decades. Let's not go in that direction.

The team has serious problems, and the qb is a stumbling, clueless disaster.

Maybe you could ring up Sanchez - see what he's up to these days.

1.) we have nothing at qb!
2.) The front seven is in serious need of upgrade.
3.) wide receiver and tight end are filled with substandard players.

at dt, I hope we resign butler and guy. If we draft nt Davis of Georgia or shelvin of lsu, in the second round, we will have a stud run stuffer.

at defensive end, we have serious needs, that can’t be solved in this draft. We must sign at least two free agents.

at linebacker, we can draft rice of Georgia and Cox of LSU in the 4th round and have huge upgrades there.

in the first round, we will be picking between 12 and 18. We have a great shot at one of two great Alabama wide receivers, waddle or smith. Waddle is the most sudden player in this draft and smith is a pure playmaker, either is better than anything we have.

in the third round, we take right offensive tackle faalala of Minnesota and move onwenu to left guard. That will give us a monster offensive line!

Is this a pipe dream? Would you rather have BB in all his capacity for the last 20 years or someone else (name the someone else). I'm taking BB as coach and GM in the past and into the future.
We need someone else as GM....BB draft record especially WR/TE has not been great....time for a lot of changes and rebuilding/restructure

Great. Now answer my question.....BB strategy is not paying for WR's, which is backed up by stats.

Good Job. Quarterback improvement is the one massive upgrade need. I'm not as down on receivers and TE's as most people. A quarterback that can process the field and throw with anticipation would help improve them immensely. I like your draft selections but can we actually get 2 players of that quality at our drafting positions. I'm not up on the DT's but I really liked Rice and I think ILB is our biggest defensive problem. Replacing Bentley is my #1. I've been a lone advocate of moving Winovich to that spot. Bruschi V2. Also really like Smith. I think Onwenu will definitely be the left guard. Can we expect anything of Cajuste, ever? Maybe Herron year 2 will be RT.

I think Belichick needs help with the draft. But like an alcoholic, unless you admit you need help, you’re not gonna get help. This team can turn around fast, if they can just have a successful draft on offensive weapons.

They did a good job the last two years, with getting Winovich last year, and Dugger, Uche & Jennings added to the defense. Good, young, talented and hungry defenders, who are the future of this defense.

Now imagine if they could get offensive equivalents on offense, 2 or 3 EXPLOSIVE offensive players could make a major impact as soon as next season. A QB in the 1st round, and then nothing but receivers and maybe a TE from rounds 2 on. Then, we also have a TON of cap space in the offseason. Sign a veteran QB and others to fill holes. A quick turnaround can be possible if the do the smart thing.

Look at Washington, McLaurin & Gibson were not 1st round picks, turned their offense into an explosive offense. Chase Claypool having a great rookie season in Pittsburgh, not a 1st round pick. Just make smart moves on explosive offensive players.
The only problem with your plan is that it does not take into account free agency losses.
BB should aggressively try to re-sign players like Andrews, Thuney, Eluemuner, White, Jackson, Butler,
and Guy. Otherwise, team strong points become weaknesses.

Pats will benefit from a likely 3rd place schedule in 2021. With lots of cap space I think they can fix a lot of issues and be competitive. Gotta find that QB though. It doesn't matter who, just someone who can pass the ball and teams have to respect.

Would be nice if the moron who pointed a camera at the Bengals sideline didn't do that. That extra 3rd rounder would be useful.
Playing other teams which finished 3rd in their division is going to be a nice change for the Patriots. This will be the first time in 11 years that we won't be playing other teams who finished 1st in their division.

We still need to improve but with veterans getting cut across the league and another infusion of talent and another off-season seasoning of our younger players we should be back in the play-offs next year.

Address the middle of the defense. Our best defenses always has a tremendous rotation on the interior This year due to injury/cap we got caught with our pants down. Draft + FA.

Linebacker..Uche is nice, Wino is nice...need more. Especially if Hightower is hanging them up. Draft.

Tight End - Upgrade. Pay someone. Hunter Henry?
WR - Upgrade. Pay someone. Allen Robinson?

I do not know that cajuste can ever be healthy. In college he showed he was a player but after two years of no development or experience, can he ever recover from that? Or is he rivers part 2.

Agree - we need more speed in the defence. Personally I'd like us to draft Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons. He might go in the top 10 so we will probably miss out on him but the talent level he has he would be such a great player for Bill and Jerod Mayo to mould and develop.

I guess this is who they should be targeting even if it meant moving up. It's a clear need, you have the talent waiting to fill the need if drafted and you have the right coaching there to maximise the talent.

I don't see Bill being successful again no matter what moves he makes.

I'm not, especially at GM.

bb needs the right qb to make his system go.

will he ever find “that guy” again?

ps: we will miss out on Lawrence, the best qb to come along since Peyton, this year. But Howell of unc , though short, could be “that guy” for bb, if we tank next season.

-DL needs to get blown up. Need run stuffing NT/DT and a DE that can be an irritant at worst.

- Need a LB that is everywhere and decent enough in coverage. Return of HT would be nice, but unlikely.

-Get rid of John Simon for the love of GAWD!

-Tag Jackson a first round tender

-Franchise Thuney

-Re-sign Andrews (unlikely when he makes Pro Bowl)

-Need a QB

-Need veteran WR/draft a couple f***ing WR's!

-Need veteran TE

I think this is a great approach. Not sure we should waste the salary cap on Thuney when we have some top OL talent we drafted - Onwenu and Herron should be great next year, maybe Cajuste can emerge. I would rather spend Thuney's tag on a TE, like Henry, plus another guy. I think Thuney's tag goes up 20% which equals about $17.5M. Other than Kittle and Kelce, TEs make $8m to $10M so if we can sign Henry for $9M we gave $8.5M for someone else. The dropoff from Thuney to Onwenu at Left Guard is a lot less then drop off from Henry to anyone else.

The Tag is projected to go down by 10%. Although, I'm not sure if Thuney situation is different if he's tagged again. At worst, I'd like Onwenu slide into Thuney's spot and have someone else at RT.
