Stimulus and Patriot Place

I'm as big a fan of the Krafts as there is, but this idea is simply wrong on so many levels.

I'll be very dissapointed in the Krafts if they allow this to happen.

While I agree that taxpayer money shouldn't be used to benifit a specific business, it's a better use of stimulus money on road infrastructure than the total waste of taxpayer stimulus money that the Secretary of Transportation already spent puting up new highway mile markers every tenth of a mile.

Fix a dilapidated bridge.

Simply because the highway markers idea was a ridiculous waste, that doesn't make the Foxboro idea a good one. Most of us on this site love the Krafts and the Pats, and with good reason, but this idea is a bad one and if the Krafts accept this, quite honestly, I'll never quite look at them in the same vein.

Isn't the T in need of some repairs/infrastructure also?

I don't get this.

can't knock the Kraft's as business ppl.....

this whole thing is Ironic...

IMO

Federal $$$$ should be dedicated to the repairing of Highways and BRIDGES
It would put many ppl back to work.

This has to be done on a national level.

Hmmm.... lotsa "Krafts don't need thing" blah blah blah-ing.

The whole point is to get jobs right ? Who is responsible for people working ??? How many employees does R. Kraft have ? How many people depend on his money and his decisions ? How many people in Foxborough have jobs because Kraft came in and saved the franchise ? How many people have worked on the buildings and development around Patriot Place and will work there in the new buildings ?

Sure, sometimes the rich get richer - but he is the one who put his neck out there with an unprecedented $172m for the franchise. He incurred all the risks. Yes, it's worked out handsomely, but not many were willing to gamble.

Just playing devil's advocate... but the more Krafts we have out there, the more people they need to work.

Hear hear! There are actual public works projects that are essential to the national infrastructure: bridges, railways, subways, roads, airports, harbors, ports, lighthouses etc. These things are examples of a portion of what the Federal and State governments were created to deal with. there is simply no excuse for using a single penny of taxpayer's money (OUR MONEY) on a commercial sports venue.

Can we be 100% certain that it is legal for Kraft to build a private bridge across a public roadway? ...just asking

So because Kraft put his neck out there and made an investment that is paying off in spades, taxpayers should fund construction for his venue? I must be missing the connection here... he's already making a fantastic ROI on his investment, which is well-deserved for the reasons that you mentioned.

Doesn't mean that he suddenly deserves $9M in taxpayer money just for the hell of it, though. Stimulus money should absolutely not be spent at a private sports venue, that's just ridiculous, especially with roads in and around Boston and the T both being in the shape that they're in.

Why are people looking at Kraft on this instead of the idiots running our various levels of government? These "stimulus" packages should never have happened in the first place. Don't blame people for taking advantage of what's available to them. Blame the people who stole the money from the pocket of the taxpayers and their descendants for generations to come. Vote those clowns out of office.

Kraft isn't building it. The state govt would be, if approved. Looks like some object which is wise. Wish they objected to the Sec Trans idiotic yet expected decision to spend tens of millions on TENTHS mile markers under the guise of 'public safety'. Moron.

Dunno how folks perverted 'Fix a dilapidated bridge' into support for wage earner siezed earnings going for a P Place walk over.

The thing people should ensure — because it is the most important thing — is that this money is absolutely being spent in the most efficient way possible. Tie the stimulus money up for months in reviews and committees if you have to. No stimulus money should be spent until everyone agrees where and when it should be spent, preferably only after the economy has started to turn around.

People would seem to rather see Kraft spend the money which would mean he would own the bridge. That's why I asked the question.

Just saying - govt wastes so much cash... might as well spend where money's being made. Kraft is a money maker. Makes it for himself, and he has many, many employees.

I agree 100%

So you agree that it's wasteful, but you're okay with it because money is often spent in more wasteful ways? If there isn't a way to spend the money that isn't incredibly wasteful, then it shouldn't be spent at all. Which sort of goes back to Deus' point that all of this stimulus crap is ridiculous to begin with...

But since the money is going to be spent, can't we all agree that there are ways to spend it that might actually be somewhat warranted? The last two times that I've visited Boston, the red line on the T has been broken down, in one case because a train actually caught on fire. Seems like some upgrades might be on order, just as the first example off the top of my head...

Because this is economc stimulis money there are probably strict federal guidelines as to how it can be spent. The repair/upgrade of existing programs would likely not be covered as it would not generate any new jobs. Make sense?
