Stephon Gilmore Named AFC Defensive Player of the Month

i dont think you understand what PFF does. they have a statistical analysis which computes a rating based on plays in a game. the fact that Gilmore isnt the highest rated does not mean they dont think gilmore is better.
Isn't that the problem, that nobody understands what they do or how they come up with their ratings/rankings?

I think he has been playing better than Law did, considering he plays in the new NFL where you cant do anything to the receiver and the NFL has gone out of its way to create more offense.

Ty Law is the reason that you can’t touch the receiver anymore. Come back to me when Gilmore changes the game...

Yes, Ty Law was awesome. He was relentless and very physical. In today's game Ty would be constantly called for Illegal Contact. Gilly is as good if not better without having to touch the receivers at all....In an NFL with much more offense today and rules making it harder for a CB to do his job..

Thanks for making my point for me.

BTW 2019 Pats D points per game 7.63
14.9
16.2
Were the two best Ty Law years and I think the only time the pats D were top 10 in any Ty Law Year

Gilly has been here 3 years and the Pats D has been 7th best, 5th best and all time best since he has been here.

Gilmore runs circles around Law, lets be real.

would love to watch Gilmore 20 years ago when you could kill receivers and on a defense with 2-3 more pro Football HOFers

It means their metrics suggest Gilmore isn't playing the best of the CBs on the team, and it is fair to question models that consistently spit out results that don't correspond with reality. Especially when we know how subjective some of the statistics that factor into these ratings are; the only difference between a pass break up and a drop is judgement, for instance.

It also doesn't help that other sites like Football Outsiders have been doing the same thing as PFF except way better for well over a decade. I genuinely believe PFF only has the traction it has because of contractual agreements with big media.

well, there are a number of factors that it is basically impossible to compute statistically, thats why statistics are useful, but not always indicative of whos better or worse. For example, Gilmore is consistently going against the other teams #1 option, while jackson is going against the 3rd or 4th option. also, PFF does not know what the coaches want each player to do. or, if a player makes a catch against a player, they dont know if the defender who makes the play or is closest in coverage was responsible for that player. so, what it does, it tries its best to quantify how a player is playing based on their eyeball test and limited knowledge of what the defense is doing.

I understand exactly what PFF purports to do, lol

apparently you do not have a clue what it does if youre suggesting PFF is saying gilmore is not the best corner on the team.

I wasn't suggesting anything at the time, just taking a humorous poke at stats in general. At this time however I'm suggesting you see someone about getting that stick out of your rear.

Law might be my favorite Patriot of all time.

Gilmore's better. Agree.

Far from me to defend PFF because to me the only thing their ratings are good for is to divide players into tiers. And you could come up with those tiers yourself visually or through combination of most other box stats.

That being said I think it is not that easy to model CBs that are so good that they are rarely thrown at. Similarly with the amount of different responsibilities and varying coverages you can't just "measure" how close to WR any CB was.

Football is not an easy sport to do any really meaningful nuanced stats on. Way too much going on at the same time to do really useful metrics on an individual level. I think what FO does with their team-wide stuff like DVOAs is much more interesting and relevant (even though it comes with its own set of blatant issues).

This is all pretty much what I was trying to get at: much of what PFF puts out tries to measure things which cannot be accurately measured. Or maybe PFF takes their own stats with many more grains of salt than their readers (I'm sure they do, since they are statisticians). It's largely an exercise in futility to put individual grades on players due to what you said in the first bold paragraph, but the fact that they put these grades out at all leads to people misinterpreting them.
