Stafford on the trading block [update: traded to Rams]

Only way I want Jimmy is for no draft comp... why? That salary isn't going to help a rebuild.

Now, if he is cut and signs for sub 18M/avg for 3rs and wr keep the picks that's good offseason. But to give up picks AND be stuck with his current cap numbers is not helpful

It sure is a nice dream though. Jimmy + Pitts + a year 2 jump from Asiasi & Keene + a WR1 in free agency. Would probably still have another $25m+ in cap space left after those moves too, could grab some above-average players that other teams are forced to cut to get under the cap.
To me this sounds like the most likely way to win more games next season which we know Bill wants to do. I wonder whether Pitts will still be there when we draft. Jimmy on a two or three year contract should be the target, we can always sign him to a long extension if he proves he's durable and works in the Patriots system.

49'ers can cut Garoppolo if they get Stafford, but why would they if they can get a low pick for him? Wouldn't cutting Garoppolo be the worse case scenario for them. Is there a trade market for Garoppolo? Colts? Bears? Denver? Panthers? Houston? Steelers? If Stafford goes to the 49'ers I'm sure BB thinking would be "they need to cut Garoppolo now" and BB will just wait it out, if even interested. However, I could see a potential trade market for Garoppolo if the 49'ers were to get Stafford "today". Of course Garoppolo will have a say where he goes.

Panthers, Colts, and Bears would all be interested at a low cost at that point would be stupid to cut him when could even get a 5th

IMO, they'll move Gilmore too for (hopefully) a high 2nd which will also free up another $7m. Just seems like what they intend to do to me. He's not gonna play on a $7m salary next year and Bill isn't going to want to spend a ton on him when JC is gonna need a deal too. The DBs will be worse but hopefully there will be a small overall infusion of young talent from the draft. Offense early, defense the rest of the way.

Was just about to post that too. Breer (consider the source) says the 7 teams in the running are the Washington Football Team, Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, the Los Angeles Rams and the Pats. For reference, below is their current 2021 cap space:

WAS: $35m
CAR: $7m
IND: $64m
CHI: ($-10m)
SF: $9m
LAR: (-$31m)
NE: $58m

In other words - Carolina and San Francisco would need to make moves to fit Stafford. Chicago and and Los Angeles would need to make MAJOR moves. Only Washington, Indy and NE can cleanly fit his deal in.

Any and all teams can fit him in. The saints are like a billion dollars over the cap and the GM recently went on record saying they will work it out and they aren't rebuilding. There are ways and if those teams above the cap want him, they'll get him. Even the Rams who hold a ridiculous contract on Goff I bet could find a way to get it all to work.

I didn't say they couldn't make it work, I'm just noting who could fit his deal in without the need to make other moves just to get under the cap, or need to restructure his deal in the very near future (or both).

No thanks. IMO.

I'd rather rebuild. Mac Jones, Kyle Trask, Trey Lance.

Get a true #1 WR in 1st round. Waddle or Devonta or Pitts.

2nd round get a QB.

I would give up the #15 for Stafford, at $20 million it’s a good deal overall. I do however think that Indy believes they are on the cusp of truly contending and they would outbid NE for him.
#15 for a guy who will most likely be retired in five or six years? A guy who is 0-3 in the playoffs? While we are in full rebuild mode? That seems like desperation. I would much rather have the young kid we get at 15. Should be, at bare minimum, an above average starter for a decade plus. I like Stafford. But he's not worth a mid first round pick at his age. Draft picks are too valuable. Second round, I would be fine with. But unless we are getting Watson (no chance) I don't want to give up first round picks.

Cousin,
Your opinion is well noted but the problem is Goff, Wentzel. Darnold. Haskins etc. All first rounders who are now poopy. Trubisky believe it or not is another but might be salvageable
I'd rather have a Kyle Allen or even Trubisky than a "definate maybe" like those "Draftees". But again. my opinion.

#15 for five guaranteed years of a good QB.

Some of you really think this is a bad deal?

Every single coach in the league would gladly give up a #15 for that. 5 years of very good QB play is worth a lot more than a mid-first-round pick.

I would rather take a young QB that is malleable and can be taught properly from the ground up.

Will Stafford unlearn all the bad habits and tendencies he picked up in Detroit? I don't think so. It's generally quite hard to take an established QB that has the humility, flexibility, and willingness to start from scratch, both systematically and mechanically.

I think BB will continue with what he has done in the past which is to pick up as many value QB's as he can and throw them all into the ring and see who is the last man standing at the end of TC. Taking Stafford essentially voids that, IMO. But who knows, I may well be wrong.

Belichick has drafted 7 QBs since he drafted Brady and none of those QBs panned out for any other team in the league. He is just as bad as the rest of the league at finding a QB. 85% of these first round QBs don't give 5 good years to the teams that drafted them.

And most of these guys were drafted well before #15. I would take stafford for 15 rather than any of these guys.

Most top prospects will be gone before Patriots pick

They can't get a 5th unless Jimmy agrees to drop the no-trade clause.

We know whatever happens BB will killed for this. Trade's for stafford, "ugh terrible move". Stafford goes to indy "BB let stafford get away" or better still "no veteran wants to come play for BB"
