223 career games, almost exclusively on special teams...one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, 2 (maybe 3) blocked punts, and one touchdown...Tasker had 6 blocked punts in 163 games

what a complete joke. Slater sucked last year and has sucked for several years. waste of $ and the effing special teams were atrocious....why In the wtf are they bringing him back? is this so Bill the Coach can "communicate" w younger players? such a waste of $

From the article:

After being named to the Pro Bowl in 2019, Slater officially passed Steve Tasker for the most special teams Pro Bowl honors in league history. That alone puts him right in the upper echelon of all-time greats.

Moreoever, Slater’s knack for downing kicks deep in opposing territory and making open-field tackles is legendary in New England.

how many blocked punts? forced fumbles? in his career? he's been flagged for TEN penalties in his career....
Are you serious?

There are contrarian viewpoints and there is the brainless position you've taken which exposes your complete lack of understanding for his role as a gunner in the kicking game - which is the best to have ever done it in NFL history.

only bill the GM would pay $2M of whatever it is to a guy who has very little impact on a game, and hasn't made a play....I was wrong, Slater has ONE career punt block....ONE...in 2019 vs Dallas

all he's done the last 3 or 4 years is run OB, he's a waste of $ and you can get any rookie FA db to do what he does

I think this is an underrated move, they really need to fix the ST unit and it'd be even harder to fix it while also losing Slater.
You know Slater's been there for the last two seasons? When the ST were god awful.

Slater doesn't move the needle even in the slightest for this team. He plays ST only and they've been really bad for two seasons. Marcus Jones, on the team for one season, plays ST (with actual meaningful contributions), and defense, and offense... he's already more important than Slater has been at any point in his career.

And this is madness:

"Matthew's drive to be the best at what he does will one day earn him enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame." ~ Robert Kraft

are any other teams paying a gunner $2M? not to mention a gun we who contributes nothing on offense or defense? this is a locker room political move by bill the gm

Not true. And who cares? Since when is the GD gunner a vital part of a team's success?

I am sure Slater can still play.
More than that we all know Slater can LEAD!

One of the only pieces of the dynasty left.

Wonder if Mccourty will retire?

Wow I started watching football in 07-08. Slater is the only one left from back then when I first started.

How do I cope with the entire team being different than what I grew up with? These guys were MY guys.

3 or 4 years? How long has he been in the league? That's closer to the correct timeframe.

Whatever, look at just last season, even in terms of evaluating his usefulness for ST in 2023. The value isn't there anymore (at the very least).
