Matthew Slater will have loads of opportunities as ST coach around the NFL or college football. He'd also be an interesting voice on the media - he's always insightful in his appearance on TV or podcasts. Wish him the best.
Maybe he goes with Bill?

Maybe he goes with Bill?
he did red shirt his freshman year... wonder if he has a year of eligibility left...

Well, I mean he is the topic of the thread, and in some capacity, it was his job on the staff.
Slater worked a made-up, ambiguous post to help Mayo. It wasn't a football job. There was a lot of that going on. Vrabel simply doesn't see a need for whatever that job was.

Mayo's staff was basically guys he played with (or coached here with) or the first guy to accept the offer. Mayo seemed to try and force culture where a guy like Vrabel who has been around a while seems to know culture will be built organically if you have the right guys.

I didn’t even know he was there.

I know this will ruffle some feathers as I am about as anti-religion as it gets, but I don't know why the team (or any team) needs some sort of religious/spiritual advisor/team chaplain/snake oil salesmen. Can't think of many industries where some religious guy just hangs around the building waiting for someone to counsel. That always seemed like it should be a "do that on your own time" thing to me.
Because many of the players are religious.

They're close. I think Tasker also has more all-pros than Slater has.
Yep, he's got 7. Tasker was more versatile, blocking punts (and one FG), returning kicks, and playing on offense sometimes. He was a game changer and a force, e.g., his legendary performance in the 1992 AFC game against Miami, in a way that Slater just wasn't. Then again, Slater was a team captain and considered a leader, which Tasker really wasn't known for.

I think NFL rule changes in the last decade around kickoffs have made the gunner almost obsolete. Doubt the HOF's perception of gunners will change much anytime soon if at all.
Now that kickoffs are one of the most boring plays in all of football, I see your point. I do hope at least Tasker gets in, because we all remember what a big factor he was when we had to play against him. Special player, belongs in the Hall.

I love Matthew Slater, but I don't think the Patriots owe him or any other former player loyalty when it comes to the coaching staff. I think Vrabel should have his guys.

And Vrabel and Slater barely played with each other. They were both on the Patriots in 2008, but that was it. And with Slater being a rookie on special teams, they probably didn't have a huge amount of interaction compared to with other players. So I am guessing Vrabel doesn't have much of a personal relationship with him.

Did you just use Mayo and force together? Mayo forced nothing during his tenure, as the weakest coach in Pats history. Mayo's culture is what you get by default when no one is establishing a winning culture. Really, it's the opposite of what you said. A winning culture needs to architected, communicated, modeled, cultivated and enforced. It does not happen organically. This is true of any large team, sports or otherwise. It is a constant, dynamic process, but it gets easier once established and team members -- not just the leaders -- understand the goals and work to preserve and enhance the culture.

Tasker is a 9 time finalist and he's still not in. His resume might be better than Slater's.

I doubt there will be any such discussion.
Tasker couldn't even make it on the regular ballot. He needs to hope the Era's committee puts him in someday and he's probably an afterthought for them with the backlog of old era players they want to recognize. Slater's fate is pretty much tied to his

His chance of being inducted to the NFL HOF is close to zero.

Slate's pretty highly thought of by folks. I think the chance are better than you give him credit for.

Regardless....I think he was a solid player, great teammate and just a good dude. I am certain when he retired there wasn't any coach that could tell him something about special teams that he hadn't seen. I would have liked to seen him start out as some assistant special teams coach and then after a couple years take on the role.

Then why didn't he start to do that last season?

Which is why I said discussed. Like Tasker it should receive some discussion.

Tasker was a far, Far superior player than Slater was.

Until Tasker gets in, yep. If he does, then Slater will get in eventually. His longevity as an elite gunner is unmatched.

Tasker getting in has or at least should have no bearing whatsoever on Slater getting in.

It is.

Nor should there be.

Every thread doesn't need to be derailed by your nonsense either, but most are.

If it makes you happy, rather than give my opinions on a message board (what a wild idea huh?) I'll just sit back and watch @sb1 spin you around like a toy. That's been worth the price of admission.

Good God please don't provoke that vomit of a back and forth.

Religion is a big big part of a lot of FB player's lives, just is what it is.
