DRAFT Sidy Sow - Round 4 - 117th overall

"I’d mentioned the Patriots not addressing their tackle need—there’s a postscript to that one. I know New England was excited to get Sidy Sow from Eastern Michigan, who has been projected as an interior offensive lineman, and who they got with the pick in the fourth round that they picked up for going back from No. 14 to No. 17 (in the Steelers trade) in the first round. My understanding is they’re gonna try Sow at tackle, where he actually played as a true freshman in 2018."

How would you grade a Draft where you get a big lockdown CB and starting OT with a single 1rd pick ; )

(although technically they used the #120 to trade up for a kicker . but its in the ballpark)

I get the Onwenu 2.0 vibe w Sow - potential monster guard who could be second best OT option only behind healthy Brown..

Lets not forget Strange has skillset to play LT as well. They have plenty of options but given how much $ they guaranteed Anderson and Reiff i wouldn't hold my breath for this yr. Maybe the new OL coach brings some fresh air and makes appropriate adjustments to field the best starting OL.

I’d love to retain Onweno, and we have tons of cap, but the Chris Lindstrom contract with a 5 yr aav of $20 million is insane and will likely affect the market for guards.

it is frustrating though having to restock already stocked positions while other positions of need still have holes.
Same was said when the Chiefs signed Thuney. Worked out pretty well for them.
Big contracts typically don't look so big a couple of years in.

I really think they would need Scar or Callahan. Or someone top tier with enough experience and creativity to draw on to make Sow a starting tackle. Starting G that can play tackle in a pinch. Would make me very happy!

Exactly! The athleticism he put on paper doesn't match the tape. He's a waist bender, feet stall out at times among other things but he's a nice little tackle project. Again Onwenu 2.0 would be a home run.

This is definitely the case, 1000%

If Strange could move to LT and succeed there, man oh man, that really changes the outlook. You have the cap space to resign Onwenu, so do it. Next year, D. Andrews, Onwenu, Strange and Sow could be a solid start. Hopefully one of Mafi or Hines proves they are the man for the other G position.

LT: Strange
LG: Mafi/Hines/Other or Sow if RT doesn't workout
C: Andrews/Andrews
RG: Onwenu
RT: Sow/Other

As the saying goes, they are a couple of injuries away of having a solid OL : )
And they FINALLY have depth to afford it..

Michael Onwenu is definitely gone with the excessive Guard Drafting. I know they are hoping at least two of these Guards developing into Starters or solid back-ups.
I wonder, given that this is a contract year, if they kick him out to right tackle where he’s maybe just ok vs elite keeping his market Value down a bit?

The contract that ATL gave Lindstrom was insane. If Onwenu can command 20 million a year then I think letting him walk makes sense. Would rather spend that on an elite tackle.

Ownenu is staying at Guard we have too many Tackles on the Roster already it should make for some good competition. C Anderson and R Reiff are potential Starters to keep Mount Trent Brown on his toes.

With Atonio Mafi, this is a superfluous pick.

Unless he can play tackle.

His length and experience suggest that the answer is yes. After this season we likely won’t have the veterans Trent Brown and Riley “Short Arms” Reiff.

Reiff is going to do three things for us: Start, suck, and then get hurt.

Maybe we will resign Wynn and promise him LT like he obviously wants.

State you're tough.

It's OK to take a guy like Mafi -- who you don't really have room for -- in the 5th round. It's OK to double up in case one of them doesn't pan out.

Although Froholdt has turned into a decent starter in the NFL, it was quite alright to take Onwenu in the 6th even though you took Froholdt in the 4th the prior year. No one was displacing Thuney or Mason for the next 2 years, but why not use late picks on a position with some depth.

Take the BPA. To assume you've filled the position just because you already expended a 4th rounder on a player, when the attrition rate for draft picks is so high, it's not good business.

I think it makes sense when you consider that their current reserve IOL are Ferentz, Hines, and Russey. The former is a guy 99% of the board wants to get rid of every year, and the latter two are entirely unproven. With Andrews closer to the end than the beginning, Onwenu a question mark for 2024 due to contract, taking a few swings at guys who could improve your IOL depth in 2023 and potentially be a starter in 2024 is prudent IMO.

If the 2024 IOL ends up being Strange-Jake Andrews-Mafi as starters with Sow being your top reserve G, the picks end up looking pretty good. We'll see what happens.

I would love IF David Andrews gets beaten out and we get Stronger and more Athletic @ Center I think Mac would be less nervous in this scenario.

I'm going full fledged, glass half full thinking here. But in 2024 your New England Patriot OL:
LT: Strange
LG: Mafi
C: Ja. Andrews
RG: Onwenu
RT: Sow

Christian Gonzalez is an All Pro, Keion White has double digit sacks, Mapu is a freak of nature on the field, Boutte is healthy and a 1000 yd receiver, Ryland and Baringer are pro bowlers.
NE Patriot 2023 Draft goes down as the greatest draft in history!!!!

Your Left Tackle projection is somewhat Strange.

More likely scenario:
Sow turns into a solid G, with the potential to kick out to T if needed.
Mafi is your backup G
Strange at G
Andrews at C
Another year looking for two T's.
C. Gonzalez is good.
White is a solid rotational DL
Mapu is a great STer and a solid sub package LB
The St guys are adequate
Boutte is a 50/50 wildcard...probably more like 30/70, but not bad for a 6th rounder.

Which is a pretty solid draft if it happens that way.

Seems to be a classic Pats move to sign a bunch of Vets to 1 year deals, and then line up multiple draft picks for the next year (Y2 for the draft picks).

And when has that "red-shirting" process ever worked here?
