Should the Patriots evaluate Joe Judge's performance?

Not sure how Joe Judge can be blamed, if players fumble punts he cannot catch the ball for them.. pretty confident BB is evaluating him as the year goes no..

Last week it was a blown blocking assignment by Geneo Grissom, and as much as we would like it to be different Darrell Sproles is the best punt returner in the NFL.. crap happens, two ST miscues in one game are rare..

We are used to perfection in this phase of the game.. sometimes there are mistakes..

Not sure you can't be upset with a guy for players muffing punts. Now if they were given up 30-40 yard run backs on kickoffs and 20-30 yard returns on punts I could see him being on a hot seat.

Every time there's a loss, somebody has to lose their head. I know a lot of jobs are like this where you find a scapegoat and blame them for everything, but really, it's a bit ridiculous. I will never forget the calls to cut Gronk after he caused a fumble and fumbled another one in that Cleveland loss.

So let's look at the whole body of work for the entire season instead of the lowest point. Otherwise, yeah, cut Gronk (he also had 3 drops in that Browns loss, and a penalty too).

Patriots ST:

- 7th in touchback %
- 2nd in kickoff return average allowed
- 2nd in field goal % (1st place Lions are 17 for 17, while Patriots are 26 for 27)
- 1 of 8 teams to be perfect from the new XP distance (46 attempts significantly more than the other teams. Jets are next with 37, Packers next with 32).
- 32nd in kick return average
- 8th in punt return average
- 2nd in 20+ yard punt returns

The one area that is very murky is punting. The stats are pretty awful for this, a lot of cumulative and very few averages. For example, Allen is 18th in punt average and 20th in punt net average. But part of that may be attributed to field position. For example, 46% of Allen's punts have landed inside the 20. The league leader in net average, the Ravens, only have 37%. I have no idea where he ranks in the league because I'm not going to calculate this for 32 teams. NFL, you can do this so easily. Why?

Including the Eagles game, the punt return yards allowed would put us at 12th. But that only works out to 8.3 yards per attempt. Again, no average allowed stat by the NFL and not going to calculate it for 32 teams, but FWIW, 8.3 YPA would rank 18th in the league for returns. 4 of the top 5 teams allowed under 8 YPA, but it's also worth noting without that one return by Sproles, our average is 5.9 YPA. Now every play counts, but with only 27 returns total, we're talking about extremely small sample sizes here.

So I think you have to look back to last year. We were 12th in punt average and 12th in punt net average. But only 38% of Allen's punts landed inside the 20. And despite the TD allowed this year, our 8.3 YPA on punt returns allowed is better than last season's 9.2 YPA. Again, small sample sizes, but over the course of the season, our punt coverage has been better this season than last, although big plays get considerably more notice.

Judge should be evaluated. So should Josh. So should BB and Tom and everybody who plays. And yes, Judge should get help. As should Josh. As should BB and Tom and everybody else too. But to single him out after one bad game is ridiculous. Josh's play calling set up the punt situation to begin with. Tom made some really poor decisions. The defense struggled with the run game. The OL struggled all night. There was plenty of blame to go around that night. Focusing solely on Judge won't fix all of the things that went wrong.

The Patriots 8.24 YPR Allowed puts them 17th currently.. The 5.9 would put them at 8th.

How about this fellow? I wonder what his eval says. If injuries did not help Goog out, what is going to help him? Length of coaching?

I wonder how much Slater and new addition Brandon King cover up on the ST unit. Those guys are damn good.

The Philly game cost us HFA and, in turn, may have cost us a chance at the Super Bowl. That game was a ST clusterf---

Saying all that, one game shouldn't cost a coach his job. People smarter than me know what effect, good or bad, that Judge had on the team.

That said, it's disappointing to have problems blamed on rapid player turnover occur in a unit that's assistant-coached by a Ventrone.

Albeit the other Ventrone, the one whom, if memory serves, the Patriots redesigned their kickoffs around.

[IIRC, in 2008, if you watch the KOs, you'll see rather than having everyone on the line, they had two rows of five lined up behind Gostkowski. The basic idea was that the opposing team would have no idea where Ventrone was coming from until the very last second.]

If BB doesn't take a look at him its a smart move........except if he does, which is also a smart move

I believe that BB and Ernie Adams and whoever else actually makes football decisions in Foxboro evaluate everyone after every season. I wouldn't be surprise if BB doesn't even ask Adams to evaluate him, behind closed doors.

So, sure. IMHO, the order of evaluation this year would be:

Offensive Line (apparently already "in progress" )

Strength and Conditioning (after a quantity of important injuries several standard deviations beyond those of the average team; let's only chalk it up to "bad luck" after someone who knows what they're talking about determines that things couldn't have been done better to prevent the kind of disaster they had this year in this department)

Special Teams, aside from the K and P (Gostkowski made a big mistake on Sunday, but it doesn't change anything where these two guys are concerned)

Running Back (who will come back from injury in what kind of condition?)

More support for Butler in the secondary.

Do they need another WR?

Defensive front four/seven. Great, but where could they use help? I'm not smart enough to know.

Quarterback.
Brady: "You're still the greatest but, after the last three months, we're glad you're still alive Tom; hope you don't decide on retiring before we get you killed out there."
JG: is he the future or a reliable backup? Tom had an MVP caliber season, but he will be 40 after next season and "there are no guarantees" once you hit that age.

the special teams problems only became an issue once edelman was hurt. other than the muffed punts, which a healthy edelman should fix, the only other major special teams gaffes were the TD returns aganst philly. call those a fluke.

Then you -- and apparently many others here -- have not been paying attention to the horrific blocking in the ST unit for the majority of the season. When Harper fumbled that punt in Denver it could have been avoided in a lot of ways.. properly blocking the gunner was one of them. The kickoff/punt coverage has been abysmal almost all year.

I don't remember ever having to worry about a Scott O'Brien's unit impacting games like I do now under Joe Judge. The Eagles punt block is a fundamental breakdown regardless of the injuries we have faced.
I will give him the muffed punts because of injuries, but the return TD and that punt block are indicative of the sharpness we have lost.
Am I being too harsh?
Now I am worried about specials teams than what the other team is doing on defense and offense.
Edit: Not to be canned, but getting O'Brien for pointers or assistance. It is an important phase of the game and as we have seen, you can lose a game with specials teams without the defense being given a chance.
Because we never gave up punt returns before.

I think we are going to have to review fan performance on this website
