I think it's safe to say that nobody on this board was a bigger champion of the Brissett/Dorsett trade than I was. Unfortunately, there are multiple issues with a Dorsett extension:

    • He's worth less to the team if Brady isn't coming back
    • He may not want to come back to the team that keeps dropping him in the WR hierarchy, if he gets other offers
    • He may decide to gamble on bigger money from another team
    • The team doesn't really have the space to do it now, and continued good play will keep raising the amount needed
    • He may be accepting of being behind the likes of Gordon and Brown, but he may not be willing to be behind Harry next year, because Harry's shown nothing to indicate that he can be anything but a lumbering WR3/WR4 type, to date

I'm sure there are others, but those are a pretty good start, and those are all things that need to be worked through before an extension can/should get done.

Only if Thomas were 100%, as I always said when discussing that topic.

According to your own words he was all ready to play. Yet BB still traded him inside the division to the ......Jets for a 6th rounder.

Demaryius Thomas Re-Signed to 1-Year Deal with Harry on IR

    Sept 4th

"He is a better player. I didn’t say he is better if he is too injured to play.
There is no indication he is to injured to play either."

"Why would they have brought him
back this week if he wasn’t ready to play?
    They could have waited.
In any event, the point is that he is a better wr than dorsett."

The truth is he USED to be a better WR than Dorsett. It remains to be seen if he will in the future.

Where did I say he was ready to play? I didn’t
I questioned why they would activate him if he was t ready to play but clearly they did because a) he was inactive and b) after being traded he sat out practice.

I stand by the fact that if he were 100% he would still be here.

Even the 100% healthy version of 2019 DT would be behind Dorsett on the depth chart. There is no time machine to get 2013-2016 DT back.

Or he would have blown out his achilles in game one.

Bingo...which is why I am always higher on my estimate due to free agency or when considering the extension in light of an upcoming free agency.

Example, about 80% of my posting here in the upcoming weeks before FA in 2019 was about the FA values of Trey Flowers and Trent Brown.

I said Brown would get $16M minimum and likely closer than to $17.5. Many thought I was being ridiculous and thought he would be closer to $12M or 14M at most. He got $18M.

Similar story with Trent Brown, who got 16.5M per year.

Heck, Malcolm Brown, who is nothing special at all got $5M, which is almost at the $6M that I’m putting for Dorsett.

So I think Dorsett would get more than $6M on the open market; $6M is the extension amount, which is a give-and-take from team and player in signing it early for less money.

Feel free to disagree, though...I just can’t imagine someone thinking he’d fetch less than $5M annually if he continues to play this way.

VERY much disagree. If the Stidham era begins in the next 2-3 years having good receiver depth is even MORE important.

Besides, my memory of the preseason isn't perfect but I thought Stidham did an OK job connecting with Dorsett in the preseason, especially for a raw rookie.

Media invented BS. Dorsett has never expressed any kind of discontentment with his role in New England. Everyone expected Dola to resent his demotions too -- never happened.

First valid reason I've seen so far, and it's only really a good argument in favor of not lowballing Dorsett. He's got a role here, and Stidham being our QB instead of Brady doesn't really change that role very much.

I trust Bill to be able to manage the cap and still get what needs doing, done. Given his youth and the fact that a LOT of our WRs are on short term deals, locking Dorsett up is one of those things IMHO

Again, this is arguing some kind of ego problem that there's no actual evidence for. Everything we've seen suggests that Dorsett buys into the whole Do your Job thing 100%. That's actually one of the reasons I want to keep him in New England. We're going to have to revamp our WR corps next year anyway, re-signing Dorsett means one less moving part.

Because of the current level of complication of the offensive play book, and the essential need for the Wrs to be able to read the game the same way that Brady does, you need players who are on the same page as Brady, which is why continuity is so important. There are no pages for Stidham. In terms of game play, every WR would be starting from scratch with him. [/QUOTE]

That's obviously not correct, as I was merely noting a possibility, and the existence of the possibility has nothing to do with the media.

The rest of your post has you making responses which don't change the point of my post. For example, whether or not you trust BB to manage the cap doesn't change the fact that managing the cap would be required, and whether or not you see evidence of what you call an ego problem doesn't change the fact that the possibility of Dorsett being pissed about getting demoted in favor of a player who's not better than him would be something that would have to be ruled out and/or dealt with.
