I get this sentiment, but when you have the money to spend, it's ok to overpay a little - especially when you're so bereft of sheer talent.
There were good FAs. Xavier McKinney at FS would have been a great signing. Christian Wilkins at DT would have been an amazing signing. There were #2 CBs as well.

@Ivan with his "there were no FAs schtick" is all hogwash.

Well no. Mostly because only one of them will be on the right side of 29 come next season.
Believe it or not there are top WR's in the league who are productive into their early 30's. We are likely signing a 3 year deal not a deal until the player is 40. 30 doesn't need to be the barrier.

And you would have had more than enough left over to sign Tee Higgins twice next year.

But we got Chuks Okorafor and KJ Osborn, so there's that.

Yes, there were players who signed contracts that we wish were with us. There is little reason to believe that any of them wanted to sign with the patriots, even for an additional couple of million a year.

How much evidence do we have that there were players who wanted to play with us that we passed on. Did Wolf just not try to sign any top players? Do we know? Did Kraft tell him NOT to spend big money?

Clearly, the REAL test will be in 2025. As you once warned us, it is NOT at all clear that Wolf will be willing to spend all that money even in 2025.

On a team with a 23 year old QB, a WR on the wrong side of 30 wouldn't be nearly as useful as one who's 25. You're building a team, you're not going to be competitive next year. Say you sign Diggs, who's 32. Assuming the Patriots play it right, they should be contending by 2027, Maye will be 26, but Diggs will be 35.

You don't know if you don't try. Giving up before trying is not the kind of person I am.

I understand your position. BTW, If that is the case, Wolf won't spend it all in 2025 if he believes that he has no chance at the playoffs.

I strongly disagree. I think that we can be competitive in all of the next 3 years, the rest of Maye's rookie contract. If we contract like most teams, we will have much more than !30M AAV of players signed in the 2025 off-season. After all, the first year of contracts is always lower than the 2nd or 3rd. And no, I'm NOT talking about the desperation of using void years and options. Thoe tricks can wait unit 2027.

Presuming some improvement in coaching of the Defense, I could see us competing if we sign the following, plus getting contributions for a couple of our draftees.

OFFENSE
Hooper
2 LT's
2 WR's

DEFENSE
extend or replace Jon Jones, Ekuale and Wise
Austin
CB
FS
EDGE
DT
ILB
==========
I think that this is doable. Consider starting with one of the WRs, Holland and Cam Robinson, plus drafting Hunter. That would be a serious start and a major improvement on both sides in 2025.

If we are #3, we can plan to draft Hunter (presuming he is a WR in the combine and pro-day). The we will want a #2 and will pay less in free agency. Higgins, Hopkins, Godwin, Cooper and Diggs are all available as of now. They won't all get outrageous money.

I still want them to trade a 4th for Deebo. I think SF will be much more likely

A beat up Deebo is better than what we have.
Pretty sad actually.

Wolf needs to be fired as much or more so than Mayo.

Coach Jonathan should be demoted as well. No coach worth a damn wants to work for an owner who takes notes, wants to coach, be GM and thinks his input was part of the last dynasty’s success.

Hire someone competent, sign the checks and shut up.

Here's a player we should focus on under this new defensive regime: Kyle Dugger

He has had the wildest ups and downs of any player. They were mixed in with an injury that he played through for several games until they finally sat him. Since he's been back, he's been plastering players all over the field.

They have him playing constantly out of position. He is miscast. But if you manage to run it 5 yards+ past the DL, he will be there to punish you.

As a free safety, they have him playing way too shallow. Offenses have gone over the top of the safeties, including Dugger, multiple times.

By all rights, this should be a player entering years of Pro Bowl consideration, as he was headed there after what should have been a Pro Bowl year in 2022.

And yet, despite his obvious abilities, we're seeing a guy who is lost in bad coaching and bad defensive design.

He's a key player to look at. When people say the Patriots lack talent and they need a total overhaul, they aren't taking into account the talent that is here that may thrive under a better coach.

Dugger is entirely different than players like, for instance, Godchaux. Godchaux seems to have checked out. I'd argue Keion White is being so vocal this week because he's also one of the ones who cares but is struggling mightily.

Two things are troubling me this morning: 1) will Polk’s injured shoulder keep him out of next week’s Bill’s game and 2) regarding Mayo and whether he should remain as Coach next year. Two words come to mind and are frightening if he remains, they are “Sophomore Jinx”!

Hopefully Kraft realizes he looks 100 worse if he ends up firing him next season instead, proving everyone right.

If he just bites the bullet now and hires the right guy, people forget about this and applaud Kraft for quickly fixing.

Whites been played out of position too.

Polk’s absence would be a net positive. He stinks.
