Shock night might not be over: Butler rumours

In one of today's trade predictions this is how Butler was evaluated:
  1. Patriots trade CB Malcolm Butler to the Saints or Eagles for a 2018 fourth-round pick.

Evaluations of Pats fans are normally much higher than reality (remember Collins) which is good.

That Eagles team would be unbeatable with a couple of above average CBs.

yeah - ancient news but Pats-related. More recently the Redskins gave up 3 firsts and a second to move up to pick RG3. Not apples to apples comparison, but shows how desperate (and foolish) teams can get when they need a quarterback.
Well, I don’t think moving up in the draft is a good comparison to giving up 2 first rounders for a veteran player, mainly due to the low cost of the rookie selected.

I don’t think we’d see too many NFL players traded for multiple first round selections in today’s day and age, Jay Cutler notwithstanding. Prior to that, I think you’d have to go back a good number of years.

I don’t see any reason to get rid of Butler in 2017. None.

He is nearly 30 and there is clearly something going on with this team and Butlerr's camp. If Bill doesn't plan on resigning him, he could be willing to sacrifice this year for the future in the form of draft picks. Sometimes he is delusional about his ability to coach up inferior talent and he is obsessed with acquiring draft picks. I'm not saying I agree with it, but I could see it happening.

Jason La Canfora continues to hear that the Patriots are open to trading CB Malcolm Butler ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. La Canfora adds that the Patriots could attempt to paid Butler and the 2018 second-round pick they’ve acquired from the 49ers in return for a quality player.

La confora is literally never right

I would trade Butler and OUR 2nd rounder to saints for DE Cameron Jordan (cost controlled through 2020) . Keep 49ers pick

Defense might have given up 21 fewer points the last 3 weeks without Butler.

Sorry, man. Didn’t mean to dislike this post, even though I don’t agree with it. I must have accidentally hit the button scrolling. Fixed now.

Getting an 'true' 4th rounder from the Saints or Eagles would be around 10 spots better than the 4th round comp pick they'd get if they simply keep him like they should. That price is not worth giving up Butler.

Butler plays with great toughness and attitude - but he’s not staying in NE. The ship has sailed

1) The lone reception Butler allowed all game.
2) A TD in garbage time to the best, most athletic WR in league.
3) Butler allowed a TD to Kerley, yet he also took away a TD from the Jets and grabbed an INT that directly led to a Pats TD.

He's been the #1 CB on a defense for that last 3 weeks which has averaged 12 PPG.

You'd have to think kf they were planning on paying Jimmy as a starting QB, then they have the wiggle room to pay two starting CBs...

Butler isn't Sherman or whatever other super shut down top CB one could name. But making mistakes does not mean his good value to the team isn't obvious. The Patriots don't have to have shut down corners (though it would be nice --though its not currently practical) they just need CBs who make the solid majority of passes competitively defensed.

One of those above Butler is in good position -- the WR just made a damn fine play. It happens. If Butler, Gilmore, JBad, Rowe, Jones etc can be in that kind of general position with a pass coming to their man then we should be in pretty good shape over a 60 minute game.

In the end I really want us to keep Butler this year.

BUT

I will admit this whole idea of trading that SF pick AND Butler would be intriguing. We would likely get an excellent player in return. That and I've been very impressed with Bademosi and Jones. Add them with both Gilmore and Rowe and that could be a formidable group of CB's.

All that said, I like our progress the last few weeks, and Butler's play has been a large part of that. I'm very hesitant of us letting him go.

Butler is such a smart CB. Him trying to ouch the ball out of Gordon's hands was just like, a great display of on the spot thinking.

He immediately knew the ASJ ruling was a fumble.

His persistence to play till the last absolute microsecond is great. One of my favorite plays of all time is his follow through on OBJ endzone catch.

That play in Super Bowl 49 was ok too.

If they trade Butler I'll be freakin' pissed, sick to my stomach. I'd rather have him than Gilmore.

*MAYBE* Calvin Johnson level trade and I'd be placated. Maybe.

I'm hoping this is just a stupid bs rumor and nothing comes of it.
