Re: OT: Shake-up at WEEI D & H out

Not really....

Many of them are former/current sports journalists and beat writers. Pete Sheppard is a Pats fan with a communications degree. Nothing more.

So they went to college to learn how to write instead of how to speak. And now they're trying to make a living trying to speak.

My point is, there are few former coaches/players that actually host these shows. Yeah I know you have Zo and I guess Merloni now but for the most part they don't know any more than any of us.

So guys who make/made their living covering a team dont know anymore than us??

Do you hear what you are saying??

Sports Talk Radio is in trouble. In the olden days listening to EEI was mandatory to find out breaking news like who the Patriots cut in training camp, who's been IRed, etc. Now there's a variety of media, Twitter the Devil's spawn, internet forums like Patsfans, Reiss et. al.'s blogs, ad infinitum. Then from low Earth orbit we have SIRIUS NFL radio which is very informative, far above EEI or 98.5 football expertise. Radio features Meter and Maz?!? Time to shoot the old dog.

Yes. Just because they cover the team doesn't make them better able to dissect X and O's, or make them better talent evaluators. If it did, there would be a natural progression from beat righter, to head coach/general manager.

Also, they haven't covered these teams, in most cases, in ten or so years. You can't cover a team too well sitting behind a microphone.

Re: OT: Shake-up at WEEI D & H out

I barely listen to the local crap here, sirius man myself, but if I had to pick Felger or the Big O.. I'm going to make my decision on the lesser of two evils.. Big O brings nothing to the table and as WEEI is showing, the format is stale, a change is needed to counter 98.5

That being said, if you want football 24x7, pay the 150 bucks a year and listen to guys who have run organizations or actually played the game..
150 bucks a year? You're getting ripped off. Everytime my subscription expires, I tell them to cancel the account. They invariably ask why and I say because I have internet radio and that is free. So they offer my 4 months for $20, which I accept.

Rinse, repeat, refresh, etc....

Well, I'll tell you this: On more than 1 occasion, I hear something on the radio which either I know is incorrect or they're trying to remember a fact about something and I'm screaming the answer at the radio.

I follow football above all sports and I would put my football knowledge against any WEEI or 98.5 personality any day of the week (except the guests who actually played the game like Smerlas or DeOssie). Most of those guys would beat me at baseball and I give Ordway credit that he is very knowledgeable about basketball. But these guys are far from all knowing.

On a tangential note, I listen to the Mad Dog a lot and while he may very well be the single most knowledgeable baseball guy out there, he's really just talking out his arse when it comes to other sports.
