Sign Shelly Smith as your starting RG, move Dan Connolly to center, with Marcus Cannon for depth at both guard and tackle, and your OL is better for very low incremental cost.

If we have our entire starting OL intact going into the draft, where do you focus other than TE? I'm thinking maybe even go TEx2, DT, OC, DE in no particular order.

draft is the best place to get a quality pass catching tight end to compliment Gronk. preferibly in the first round

Personally, I go after Aaron Donald, who I think is the best defensive player in the draft. Even if I have to trade our #1 and #2. If a Mallett trade somehow works out I try to get Austin Seferian-Jenkins or Jace Amaro in the 2nd round. A day 3 center like Bryan Stork or Tyler Larsen could be a good pick.

Free agency is for filling the major holes on your team. The draft is for adding quality talent that will grow your team in the long run, and give you 4 years of cost effective depth.

I think Smith will go to Baltimore. Hear there is a mutual interest. I don't think Smith likes the Patriots. Some bad blood dating back to the 2003/2004 Super Bowl.

On the bright side, Smith's agent has said that he wants to be a slot receiver, and Edelman is deciding between Baltimore and the Pats. So if smith signs with Baltimore then that should mean that Edelman is coming back.

Cleveland is high on edelman. They are great at bad contracts.

I'd still go for Donald. Like Revis, I think he could have a "transformational" impact on the defense. Easley would be my 2nd option, but I also think that he'll end up being a top 50 pick, so if Donald is off the board I see a trade back from 29 with Easley in the high 2nd.

As for a day 1 DE, who do you see? Kony Ealy? Dee Ford? Stephon Tuitt's not really a pass rusher.

Because of FA I haven't been in the draft forum for a little bit, but Ealy has been flying up my board. I really like him and he could be thrown into a rotation with Nink instantly.

How high do you think Donald will go? Low teens?

I watched a lot of tape on all the TEs this morning. I am leery right now of a huge bust coming in the TE class. All players have huge warts. I would not spend a 1st on any of them except Ebron.

This is what I saw:

1. Ebron, a very slight player, but explosive and a matchup nightmare.

2. Amaro, passes the eye test, has size unlike Ebron, and also explosiveness. Scares the heck out of me because he struggled tracking and adjusting to long passes in the combine. Was discombobulated. I see the guy as a high bust factor.

3. Niklas, not especially explosive or athletic, and looked to have stone hands several times I saw him. Good blocker.

4. Austin Seferian Jenkins, a huge guy who can block out the sun. Has great hands. People say he's not speedy and can't create separation, but I see a guy with excellent burst. He just had surgery for a stress fracture. Problems: he's a bit of a dog. He rarely plays to the whistle, is questionable on blocks, and he gives u on his routes if he's resisted at all. His biggest asset, creating space over the middle, might be negated if he's resisted.

Amaro and ASJ in the second round if they're there, Ebron in the first if he drops, and Niklas not before the 4th round.

I like CB, S, WR, as my 1st round focus, with DT Hageman if he's there.

There are so many good CBs available, Joyner, Gilbert, Roby, Fuller, D Dennard, and more. Both safeties Pryor and Dix could be good at #29, but there are more safeties available later too in Dixon and Buchanan and Exum.

I'm tempted to wait for a WR like Moncrief or Bryant in the 3rd round, but if a top WR drops to you earlier, you have to take him.

I'm OK with a TE in the second round, not the first unless its Ebron.

Ealy might be available because Mayock and some scouts are knocking him for his 4.96 20 at the combine.

I don't know. There's still a lot of time between now and the draft. I don't see him going top 10, personally, though anything can happen. Outside of the top 10 the Giants at #12, Bears at #14 and Cowboys at #16 are possibilities, with Dallas the most likely one. I'd trade #29+62 to Pittsburgh to for #15 if Donald is still on the board. It's a bold move and a bit uncharacteristic, but so was paying $12M to Darrelle Revis.

Is BB reading PatsFans now?

It looks like it.

After all the whining by fans here during day one of free agency, Belichick went out and scooped up Darrelle Revis.

It's such a deep draft I hate to give up 3rd rounders, never mind 2nds in a trade. Our 2nd rounder could have a first round grade. Heck, I'm bummed we traded a 5th for Sopoaga. A good number of potential starters might be found there like S Antone Exum or G Michael Schofield or CB Phillip Gaines or WR Jeff Janis.

In a thread on drafting DBs, I pointed out that 7 different DBs played at least 33% of snaps for the Patriots last year, and that just about nobody can field 7 DBs they feel decently confident in.

Well, if they landed Browner the Pats' top 7 would run something like this:

Revis, McCourty, Browner, Dennard, Ryan, Arrington, Harmon

That's darned good.

That's darned good.

Assuming no divergences in Ryan and Harmon's progression(s), that's gotta be right up there in the entire league. Forget the others, just the thought of Revis and McCourty playing together...

I'm guessing you missed YESTERDAY around here...it was a little different...

LOL What a difference a day makes.

The best part will be seeing which of the FA complainers are going to come forward now that the Pats made a big splash in the free agency pool.

I already saw one of them trying to sneak over to the other side. LOL

Mayo, I agree with the principles of this but let's presume the big "if" of the Mallett trade doesn't come through. If you spend your top 2 picks on Donald, what the heck do you do about the huge hole at TE 2?

First of all, if I'm trading #29+62 to move up for Donald, what am I really giving up at #62 for the TE position? Will ASJ or Amaro really be available that late? I doubt it. Troy Niklas could easily be off the board too, and his concussion history is still an issue. I don't think CJ Fiedorowicz is remotely worth considering that early. (Obviously, there are talented players at other positions that we would be passing up, but I still think it's worth it.)

We will have the best TE in the game back, probably for the season opener. There is still a possibility of adding some FA depth at the position. And I like the day 3 talent available at the position. Crockett Gilmore, Joe Don Duncan, Richard Rodgers, Jake Murphy, Marcel Jensen. Colt Lyerla and AC Leonard are moon shots with big issues, but tons of talent. Logan Thomas and Larry Webster are conversion projects, but have elite measurables. Trey Millard, Trey Burton and Gator Hoskins are talented H-back guys. And Mark Harrison is still a potential hybrid WR/TE conversion. Lots of those guys could make for a deep and talented TE group along with Gronk and Hooman. I don't see any need to absolutely take a TE in the first 2 rounds. I'd welcome ASJ or Amaro if they fell to the right range where we had a pick, but I don't think I'd orient my draft around them.

Donald, OTOH, is a guy who I think could have a transformational effect on the DL, as Revis will have on the back end (and I'm hopeful that Jamie Collins could potentially have at the second level).

So my answer is "yes", I do it if Donald is available in that range, regardless.

I noticed you are a big Aaron Donald fan, and with good reason, but could I ask do you have any concern about his size at the next level? Can he be an every down player in your opinion?

Also how much better is he then Easley who could be had in the second round, similar playing style, etc.

They could trade a 2015 pick to move from #29 also.

Hope to read about a deal getting done today. Would be an excellent addition.
