Seahawks CB Brandon Browner meeting with Pats Thursday 3/13

He'd be a head hunting safety who can also plan man coverage, and who can match up with any TE in the league. That's a great combination. And with Revis making the field "smaller", he'd be even more effective.

Sign the god damn beast!

Ya and if Welker tries to go over the middle

Sounds like the answer at SS, and can double at CB if multiple guys go down. That would be a sick secondary Revis-Dennard-Arrington with DMC-Browner up top, and a deep secondary as well. You have Harmon who already IMO is a solid #3 and I'm okay with filling in if DMC/Browner go down and Ryan provides solid insurance if Revis/Dennard go down. Especially considering they should improve going into year 2.

Sign Browner
Draft/sign DT
Draft/sign a rotational DE

And this defense if healthy is the best one since at least '04.

The Patriots/BB's pitch will probably be as a starting safety across McCourty.

The Redskins pitch will probably be as a starting cornerback across Hall.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if we sign him. I'm not sure he would choose learning a new position over playing CB.

I certainly don't think it will be a shoo-in, but some things that might sway Browner to New England:

1. The Seahawks just won a SB with Browner suspended. I'm sure he'd like the opportunity to be an integral part of a SB winning team.

2. Browner benefitted from playing next to Richard Sherman. I think he'd also benefit form playing in a defense with Revis taking away a sizable part of the field.

Again, I don't view it as a given.

He played SS in Denver when he first came into the league. He won't be learning a new position. Granted he never played it in the regular season because he broke his arm the last game of the preseason. But he already was taught the position.

What Belichick can do is sell him on that he envisions him as Rodney Harrison 2.0 and how a guy like that is the lynchpin of the Pats' defense and more important than a CB (at least the #2 CB when you have Revis).

Money may be an issue (especially if he is taking an one year "prove it" contract and hitting free agency next year), but top safeties are getting paid more than #2 CBs.

Plus, Washington may want him as a safety too.

My biggest concern is that he will be 30 to start the season and he's never really made big money throughout his career. This could be his best chance at getting a decent contract so I couldn't blame him for taking every dollar available. This isn't a Revis situation where he has made a ton of money already, if Washington offers more money I think he takes it. I certainly would in order to take care of my family. Hopefully the Pats can offer him a competitive deal because I think he would be a great addition if he can keep his nose clean.

Yeah, but he is also going to be serving a 4 game suspension and is 1 strike away from a year long suspension. I'm hoping that the Pats can offer him a deal that is a bit back loaded and reasonably competitive, but I don't think he's in a position to break the bank.

I like this idea. Take him to the Ground Round and make it clear that he is the last piece in putting together an elite secondary that will rival the one he left in Seattle. Rodney 2.0 works for me.

I think Smith will go to Baltimore. Hear there is a mutual interest. I don't think Smith likes the Patriots. Some bad blood dating back to the 2003/2004 Super Bowl.

Have not heard that Smith dislikes the Pats. Even if he did Smith wants to play the slot, he would be crazy not to consider the oppourtunity to catch 100 + balls and going to the playoffs.

Too good to be true but:

Revis
Browner
Woodyard

...would make me sooo happy.

It would also make the draft a lot easier from a need standpoint. They can restructure/cut Wilfork, free up cap space, sign a guy like James Jones to a multi-year deal or Nicks on a one year rental, and address the trenches and TE in the draft on days one and two.

Mayo I know you're all about trading up for Donald but I think the Pats can get better value later on with Easley at the 3-tech. I'd like to see them draft a DE on day one since that position is a bit thinner than DT.

To steal your line from the Revis thread - I would **** my pants.

Dead on Kontra

Mark it down. The Pats will not draft Easley. He is not a BB guy.

Exactly.

This four game suspension is what is preventing him from breaking the bank.

I think this is why the Pats will seriously pursue him. They will look past the suspension and to the value itself.

I'd still go for Donald. Like Revis, I think he could have a "transformational" impact on the defense. Easley would be my 2nd option, but I also think that he'll end up being a top 50 pick, so if Donald is off the board I see a trade back from 29 with Easley in the high 2nd.

As for a day 1 DE, who do you see? Kony Ealy? Dee Ford? Stephon Tuitt's not really a pass rusher.

Yup, I love this idea. Not only because it covers all our needs, but because if BB plays it right he could really have a Super Bowl-caliber roster on his hands.

And I totally forgot: Shelley Smith is visiting the Pats today. I'd like to pick him up...very good run blocker and should be inexpensive.

I agree. I love the player but football isn't important enough to him for BB to spend a high pick on him. If we are looking at that disruptive interior DT I would look at Caraun Reid or Will Sutton and slim him back down under 300lbs. Sutton is a guy with big upside if used correctly and if he can control his weight. He's gone from a projected top 10 pick to a 3rd rounder after bulking up but I really don't think that is his game.

Agreed and I've taken him off my projections. It really is too bad because the kid has talent.

Sign Shelly Smith as your starting RG, move Dan Connolly to center, with Marcus Cannon for depth at both guard and tackle, and your OL is better for very low incremental cost.
