Scott Zolak hinted Patriots are talking with Butler about signing an extension (w/ audio!)

When did Butler complain? All the complaints seem to be coming from Pats fans.

He has earned every single penny that he was paid and then some.

I never said he did complain but all the media and people going on about how mad he is going to be about Gilmore and what not.. I said it from the start that Butler would sign the tender and play in New England this season. Of course I do have to admit I predicted that before Gilmore signed his massive offer with the Pats. This is Butlers final season of his rookie contract basically and as long as he plays even just decent he is going to cash in. There were so many saying that Butler was as good as gone.. maybe not on these boards but all over the radio and TV.

Well the latest report was he was very unhappy he didn't get traded...so I wonder if they are both true. Zo knows people inside...I bet they are trying but I wonder how far it's going giving that he will want Gilmore $$

Let's remember that no team in the NFL has given up a first round pick to pry away an RFA since 2003, so it's a very rare occurrence. Placing the first round tender on him basically guaranteed that he'd be here, absent a trade, of course.

If I'm a team picking in the first round, I'm probably leaning towards drafting a player 5-6 years younger, who I can control for 5 long years on a cheap, rookie deal.

In other words, I'm surprised that you're surprised.

Sure, but Butler should have been the exception to the rule. He is an elite caliber CB on the market. Rarely do you see a player with as much talent and as few red flags in the RFA market as Butler.

And don't forget that the Saints showed interest in Butler. And they might have traded for him if Lattimore didn't fall to them at #12.

Agreed. Hard to speculate about how he compares to other previous first round tenders, though, at least in terms of red flags, as you mention.

I'm guessing that if a team places a first round tender on a player, they're valuing them pretty highly from their talent/character evaluations. The only thing we've heard in regards to Butler is him showing up a day or two late to camp/OTAs the year after he made the miraculous INT, so I'd agree that he has little character concerns--at least that we're aware of.

In terms of him being an elite CB, I'm still trying to figure that one out. I initially thought top 15, but now I'm thinking top 10-12. Then again, there's got to be a reason why Belichick values him (or doesn't) at the price they've negotiated, as well as the fact that other players don't really consider him anything near "elite" as of yet, judging by the fact that he barely cracked the NFL top 100 list. Obviously, the list is terribly subjective and should be taken with a grain of salt, but it may point towards more proof that some of us are overrating him a bit, as usual. There may be another hint in terms of N.Orleans not wanting to budge from a 3rd rounder, when some here actually thought they'd give up the 11th overall pick.

Malcolm is a terrific CB. I fully expect him to play as a terrific CB this season. If he pisses and moans, he'll join Jamie Collins in Cleveland by week 5.

They were talking about Butler being gone here also. It was infuriating to have to listen to it constantly, especially when all he did was check the market and then sign the tender.

No here one knows what Butler has told the team. Belichick often allows players to check out the market. If that's all there is, then Butler will work his butt off and the issue will be closed until after the season, or until we hear leaks regarding extension discussions.

However, perhaps Butler has indeed had communications similar to those attributed to Collins. In that case, there will likely be either an extension or a trade before the trading deadline. Of course, that decision might be influenced by the play of the Jones boys (and the #6 CB). Or, the team could pull the plug earlier and trade for Sherman and trade Butler.

Would it be unthinkable to believe that Butler has made clear that he should be considered an elite corner and treated as such (on the team and in negotiations)? This is what many folks think Collins did.

BOTTOM LINE
We haven't a clue with regard to what Butler has communicated to the patriots.

We also don't have clue with regard to the value of any extension offers to Butler. Would we be shocked if Butler rejected a $10M, $11M or even a $12M a year extension? I wouldn't be.

If Butler decides to freelance to increase his market value then he could very well end up being traded in much the same manner that's Collins was. Hopefully that won't be the case.

If that happens it will be a sad, sad day.

Asante Samuel all over again.

Doubt the pats would pay him even half of what a top cb gets. He simply isn't one, no matter how much the homers love him.
