Scott Zolak accused of spawning ... let's call it "rapgate"

I don't think it's the genre of music as much as Cam allegedly being distracted by it and always dancing during practice. When really you think about it, the whole thing is silly. Cam probably shouldn't be compulsively dancing like he does and Zolak should limit his commentary to questioning Cam's focus vs. the music itself. Newton definitely is a different breed of cat -- not an "all-business" QB like this team is used to and BB apparently has him on a long leash.
Cam is who he is. He likes to have fun. If his dancing was a problem, I think Belichick would’ve stopped it already, or asked Cam to do less of it. It was a really dumb comment by Zo. There is video of Tom Brady “getting down” (please Tom, stop dancing because you’re bad at it) to some rap during Pat’s practice a few years ago. Didn’t seem to affect him.

I remember back in the 1980’s, when I was in my 20’s playing some touch football, I always took football extremely serious, even touch football. My good friend, he would be dancing between plays all the time, and we would just laugh. It was funny because there was no music playing. Maybe in his head there was music. Anyway, that mf’er was one of the fastest people I’d ever seen on the field. He’d be dancing, and they’d snap the ball, and he’d burn some mf’er on a deep pass, or a run. Man he was fast. But also had an incredible personality that drew people to him, never met anyone who had so many friends. I suspect Cam is the same way, his personality draws people to him.

Hopefully it was that good old school rap , not this new age cardi B bs amongst several other wanna be rappers.

I’m talking about PAC, Biggy, Nate Dogg, Dre…
I go back even further. I liked Eric B and Rakim. I still feel Rakim is the greatest rapper of all time. His flow was unbelievable. Plus I felt they chose such great beats. Also loved NWA, Public Enemy and LL Cool J. That being said, I think my interest in rap died with 2PAC.

Though I do like a dude named Logic. And a certain song by YG (featuring Nipsey Hussle).

My take on rap music is a bit grey. First off, I would never blame music or any entertainment product for anything individually. Movies and music do not cause the bad issues in society. And that includes rap music. The thing about rap music which is unsettling is how it is reflective of culture, as all entertainment is.

Lets take a step back and talk about rock and roll for a moment. Rock and roll had some wild sides to it. Sex, drugs, ect... But that was the more extreme edges... Underneath nearly all of it was a general cultural message of free expression. A yearning to drop the repressive rules society had built up and to not simply give into authority without questioning it. Generally I think those are good ideals. Music wasn't responsible for this cultural shift. It was a reflection of the cultural shift that was bubbling up. But just as art imitates life, life imitates art. One fuels the other, but the fuel art gives to culture is small compared to the fuel culture gives to art. But there is some connection both ways.

My problem with rap has less do with the music and more to do with the culture that spawns it. A culture that, while it has some real gripes, is on the whole unhelpful to the cohesion of society. While rock and roll was more about stopping the repression society placed on us and questioning authority, when you delve into rap beyond the more outlandist aspects, you have a fairly blatant disregard for authority and a sense of entitlement to sex and money without earning it honestly or with sincerity. To me this isn't just an old man on his lawn yelling about how music is ruining the next generation. This is about an honest examination of the ideas music culturally reflects, and the impact music has reinforcing these ideas into that culture. This to me is where the problem is.

If one were to talk about the 'rock and roll spawned culture' (which again, it is much much much more accurate to say the cultural shift that spawned rock and roll, but that doesn't sound as good). We can see what it brought. Overall it is hard to debate that it was bad for society. From the 50s-70s There was a shift to more openness, more freedom, more oversight, more equality. Was it perfect? No. Were there potentially bad things about it? Sure. But overall I think it led to a healthier and better society.

If one were to talk about the 'rap spawned culture (ditto) we can see what it brought. It's hard to say it has done more good than bad for the segments of society it represents. That all being said. this has nothing to do with the real issues Cam Newton has.

As a side note, if one were to talk about culture reflected in music; country music would be a very interesting discussion to have. While it isn't as flashy and rock or rap, it could be argued it has downsides as well. Mostly to do with stagnation. It is a much more complex conversation no one seems to ever have.

If Steven A called out a white QB for dancing to country music during practice, would that be racist?
Naw, but if it was Contemporary Christian the sh!t would fly!

I like a few old rap songs, including these two:

Good call. While I’m not so much down w the SMAL song, both songs have so much more use of English language, rhymes, humor, and storylines than any modern rap that manages to make it over to pop-radio such that I hear it.
And both videos are killer funny.

Zolak is an idiot.

He doesn't want Cam to start and is nit-picking at dumb things.
I agree. Both of your statements are true.
Its also true that Farrars remarks were way out of proportion to what Zolak said.
They were stupid and nitpicky but not egregious. Farrar was basically insinuating that Zolaks a racist. I dont know Zolak. Maybe he is but I doubt it.
But his remarks werent. Farrar went way overboard.

Agree. It's a stretch to make that claim.

We've become a society of sensitive ignorant whiney ass fools. It's sad. A media personality said something oh my god...if you have time to worry about **** like this you need to get moving on something productive!

I'd give you 1000 "winners" but I can't.

There are no social injustice or crimes against humanity going on here.

Zo hates rap music.

Zo doesn't like Cam

Zo likes Mac

Story over.

Is it ok for me to agree with Zo on all three of those or does that make me a white supremacist or something?

Dizzy Gillespie, obviously. Look at the faces he made while blowing!
Dizzy played the trumpet with Charlie Parker and his sax...they created a tapestry of sounds never heard before in music history. You are an insulting, ignorant music bigot,

So...did they?

I agree with you on the ignorant and fools comment. You are living proof of both.

Nope. Free country last time I checked.
