Schefter: Pats sign Brandon Lloyd

While we all can disagree on projections of his value, if the guy makes Nordberg right, we will all be happier for it.

The biggest concern isn't his ability on the field, it is his inability off the field. That's what we should be hoping/praying about.

It is crazy to think that in any way Lloyd is better than Moss was in 2007. But I do think that the 2012 team, assuming Waters and Light return, has a chance of threatening the all-time scoring record. I don't think Lloyd will suddenly add 800 yards of passing for Brady, and I think that it is more likely that Lloyd's stats are culled from other players', but I think he'll open the field up and the Pats will be far more efficient. I also expect Ridley and Vereen (if he stays on the field) to be explosive out of the backfield. This could be an all-time great offense in 2012.

Keep in mind, however, one key difference between the 2007 and 2012 teams: defense.

The 2007 team had one of the best defenses in the league:

- #4 in scoring defense
- #4 in yardage defense
- #9 in takeaways

So the 2012 team needs to do a lot better than what it did this past year in order to give the offense the help it needs.

I love this post and agree 110%, I want to see all 4 picks in the first and second rounds go to defense and if you really hit on 3 we are back in business as an all-around solid "TEAM"!

Psst BB, no more trading into next year pleasssssssssssssssse!

Randy Moss in 2007 with Tom Brady throwing him the ball:

1,493 yards with a 15.3 yard average

Brandon Lloyd in 2010 with Kyle Orton throwing him the ball:

1,448 yards with a 18.8 yard average

Just saying

Wow..didnt realize this.

That's great. He's going to be great in this offense.

Just one question.....Why the *uck didn't we sign him last season when we had the chance? Pats would have won the SB.

Because he's probably worth more with McDaniels than without. He's also take less money to be with McDaniels.

I'm more concerned about his behavior in the locker room. He wants the ball, but Brady isn't going to put up with him demanding it, that is for sure.

That said, I like the signing.

Awww yeaa...really excited. This dude can make some sick grabs.

Very excited to see what the 2012 Pats O is gonna do.

Thanks for the link. I've heard a lot of people talk about his body control, but to see it in such a conentrated format is..... I've never seen body control like that in a football player. He secures the ball instantly and flows to a protected potition faster than anyone I've ever seen. Watch how he goes to the ground, and moves while on the ground. He won't take too many big hits with Brady throwing him the ball. He also appears to be amazing at adjusting to the ball in the air, which should cure what ails Brady's long ball of late.

If the Pats resign Light and Waters, and the Pats stay relatively healthy, this will be the best offense the league has ever seen.

I think it's a shame that Lloyd got a smaller deal than the other free agents WRs. even Reggie Wayne got more, and he's three years older! in all likelihood Lloyd will be very productive in our system and will be worth far more than what he got.

Not sure if you'er being sarcastic. I believe Brandon Lloyd wants to be great, and believes his best shot is with McDaniels calling the offense and Brady throwing him the ball. He's probably looking at this as a ticket to the hall of fame, and perhaps a prelude to one of the biggest WR contracts of all time... after the slary cap expands. He is getting what he wants, and still getting millions. You can't ask for much more than that from a job.

Yep.

Now we just need to resign Randy Moss to "take the top off the defense"

That's why they call them value signings. Teams have to have those to succeed or all the market deals and/or overpayments will just drag you down in the end. His deal does have up to $3M in incentives which in trade off may be very makable. There is a good chance he sees the end of his deal while some of those early market signings don't.

The fact that he was wiling to sign for 2-3M less per year to play for us is a great sign IMO.

Even at worst, I don't think he's any more of a character concern than Moss could have been, and we got 3 great years out of Moss (1 historical one) before he acted up. So honestly in a worst case scenario I'd gladly take that out of Lloyd.

BB to Condon - "These aren't the droids you're looking for"....

Well played sir, very well played.

I'm sure his NFLPA does not like this deal. They like those inflated deals with all the phoney money at the end. I was thinking he would be in the Laurent robinson deal territory 4/32 w/ 13.5 up front.

I'm no expert, so I defer to the coaches who frequent the board ... seems to me that since Moss (no comparisons, just an observation) that we've been missing an outside receiver who could make a great comeback play. That was one of the plays Moss could do with regularity because he was so dangerous downfield. Moss was absolutely brilliant at that play.

There was at least one highlight with Lloyd barrelling downfield then halting for a comeback to pick up a first down. Branch doesn't have the speed to force the coverage deep enough or the agility and size to secure the ball in a fight. None of our current wannabes and old-timers have the NFL skills to pull it off (or in 85's case, the necessary page from the playbook). Since Moss, the Pats haven't had a reliable sideline throw for a first down. Unless, maybe, they split out Hernandez.

It reminds me of what they've been missing. I hope Lloyd can bring some of that here. Surely 85 could not.

It's way too late for him to get in the Hall of Fame, after 9 seasons he's got 311 catches and 31 TD's. Welker puts up those #'s in 3 seasons easily.

Also by the time this contract is over here, he's going to be 34 heading into his next contract, you really think he'll get close to Calvin's contract or anyone else on that level?

After listening to him speak on the subject, I think Brandon is smarter than that, you don't get a ticket to the HOF in your 30's unless you buy it. But he certainly is still looking for vindication and that's fine. Hall of the very good. He seems to grasp that it's all about the system and with few exceptions for otherworldly talent you don't succeed if you land in the wrong one and if you land in the right one some folks will say you're a system player. Around here players who succeed get that it is what it is and learn to live with that, and being put in position to win a lot. Those who don't seek opportunities to disprove the theory or finish their careers out somewhere else on less value oriented deals. And Lloyd won't be breaking anyone's bank after the salary cap expands, he's past that point career wise no matter what he does here.

I like this signing on many levels, familiarity with McDaniels, outside threat and a welcome addition to the WR corps..

Who would have thunk, Welker, Gronk, Hernandez, Gonzalez and Lloyd.. that is a lot o firepower, Rex Ryan is pooping his drawers.

I hate the term "Deep Threat" or "Stretch the field"

Listening to sport radio for ten minutes this morning. They must of said each term twenty times

How about just having a guy on the team other than a tight end beating his guy on a 10-15 yard pattern. That's all this team needed.

I hate the low percentage bomb play....All you end up with is more of a chance to go three and out.

You may be right. He's 30, but if he has longevity, he could have 6+ great years receiving from Brady/some other great QB. With 2 already very good years, he's got an outside shot. I've listend to him speak, and watching his eyes and reactions during that highlight link that was posted gives me the impression that he believes he is great, and has had some crap QBs throwing to him. I could see this guy being very successful here.

Any chance the Patriots might have been interested in Manningham but decided to go with Lloyd because it's only 3 years 15 million (12 guaranteed) ?

Because Manningham signed pretty quick after and only got 2 years, maybe Belichick wanted to do 3 for 15 and 49ers did 2 for 14 or 16 (not sure how much it actually is worth)
