Schefter: Mounting belief Browns take Mayfield #1 overall

And no one took a chance on Brees or Wilson in the top 10, or even in the 1st round.

Even if Mayfield is considered a great prospect, it seems strongly against the odds to draft a 6 footer in the top 10.

Two examples of QB's under 6'1" that have been extremely successful are of course Russell Wilson and Drew Brees. Besides both having extremely good football intelligence, what do both have in common? Extraordinary athleticism.

With Russell Wilson all you need to do is what him play for a few minutes to appreciate his athletic gifts, plus he could probably be a professional baseball player if he wasn't playing football.

With Drew Brees, he isn't thought of as an amazing athlete because he is short and white, but at 12 he was the top-ranked tennis player in Texas and defeated Andy Roddick three times as a junior, and the same year he set an Austin city record with 14 Little League home runs and was chosen to play on a youth soccer select team.

In contrast, Baker Mayfield has no such amazing athletic background and was a walk-on at Texas Tech. It is extremely impressive that he has pulled himself up by his bootstraps and achieved the success that he has, but that doesn't change the fact that he is not in the same galaxy athletially as other shorter successful quarterback like Wilson and Brees.

You should watch his footwork. It’s impeccable. That’s why he didn’t have a large amount of balls batted down.

I'd still believe him more than anyone else out there.

More than Jason LaCanfora?

Schefter, Rapoport and Jay Glazer are the ones I always pay attention to.

If I am comparing top QB's, I believe that some of the physical attributes matter.

A year or two of patriot coaching coaching, along with playing with our team, could make any of the 4 a top quarterback. However, 2 years won't make Mayfield taller or his hands bigger.

I don't mind short quarterbacks. I really liked Johnny Manziel as a prospect, for example (I still do, and I think he would have been great if he hadn't been, well, Johnny Manziel). But I get focusing on the physical limitations. A weak arm is why I leave Kyle Lauletta off my big board even though literally everything else about him is great.

They would now if they had it back. There are plenty of successful quarterbacks at the 6'2" height. I don't consider the difference between 6003 and 6020 or something like that all that significant. But I can see why others might.

He meant 'Baltimore' that's why he combined 'Colts' and 'Ravens'.
I think all of the colts records went to Indy, so that’s incorrect to do.

Intriguing Draft. A few hours before it, and no one knows for sure what any single team's choice is. No one has been signed yet. No talk of any signing. It's going to be surprise time.

The only drawback from this is that there's no near consensus on which of the QBs is superior--this means that any QB choice among the top 4 is in some way fine or we'll be glad to take your leavings....takes the tension out of the early picks if not the surprise element.

I agree. I'm not a huge Jarvis Landry fan but I think he'll work well with Josh Gordon across from them, and I think Corey Coleman still has potential. Carlos Hyde and EJ Gaines were underrated pickups. Tyrod Taylor is a passable bridge starter. They have a really good defensive line shaping up. I think you're right. They could use a starting corner across from EJ Gaines, another linebacker, another rotational defensive end, and some offensive linemen (the only plus starter they have after Thomas retired is Bitonio) but I think they have a shot at being an 8-8, 9-7 team this season and even sneaking into the wild card.

Have you seen their schedule? I don't know about that.

Yeah, the Ravens and Browns are a unique situation where the city retained the intellectual property and franchise records as a result of legal action.

The city of Cleveland sued Art Modell after the Browns left and the NFL stepped in to broker a compromise. Under the deal, Cleveland retained the Browns' intelletual property and franchise history, which an expansion team would be granted a few years later. So the expansion Browns were considered to be the same franchise as the Browns pre-Ravens in respect to intellectual property and franchise records.

Therefore the Ravens' franchise history has no continuity with any other franchise. They're considered as having come into existence in 1996, though they were not treated as an expansion team and their contracts were honored despite being signed as the Browns. Like all other franchises, such as the Boston to New England Patriots or Boston to Washington Redskins (and the Texans don't get the Oilers' records), the Colts' franchise history is continuous despite the move, so they retain all records from the Baltimore Colts.

Surprise that the browns have change their minds on and off in terms of their number 1 overral pick. Is Mayfield worthy of being the number 1 overral pick?

Are you questioning the ability of the Browns to judge talent, and especially quarterback talent.

I hope that's sarcasm on your part. They stink at it. If they're smart they take darnold and that's that.

The colts have been around longer than the patriots

My list includes Baltimore as the Colts/Ravens and Indy only as the Indy Colts. I suppose I could change that to Baltimore/Indy Colts, like the lawyers want it.

He seems pretty confident about number 1.

Baker is going #1. That’s happening, but figuring out 2 will be extremely difficult since the buzz is that the Giants don’t love these QBs. The Bills could move to 2 but would they take Allen or Darnold? Do we live in a world where it’s Mayfield, Allen and THEN Darnold?

Sounds like one of allen, rosen or darnold will slip...

It is generous to give them 8 titles as 4 of them were as part of a league that no longer exists.

The AFL and the original NFL don't exist anymore either. The point is that Cleveland won titles in the pro leagues that they played in at the time. IMHO they should count.
