Schefter: Kayshon Boutte "deemed expendable" during draft weekend

I don't know why everyone wants to get rid of the most reliable WR we had last year. Pop Douglas showed flashes as did Boutte. I thought Boutte caught the ball better than Pop and he tracked the ball better than any of the WR's. He got open deep. When the QB was in trouble, he made himself available. I'm not saying he's all pro but at this point he may be the best we got from the returning WR's. Concern with his talking? Yegads, you can't shut up WR's and if that's a no no then we better jettison Polk and Baker immediately. Trade him for a low draft pick and hope the replacement will be better? I don't like it. Let him compete.

I agree if I had my way I would let him compete in camp and earn a spot with the new regime but if there is anything off-field factoring into the rumored decision to part ways then let him go. The best receiver of a bad group of receivers is still a bad receiver so if he is a headache then cut bait.

I don't get it. Of Polk, Baker, and Boutte, Boutte has shown the greatest promise on the field, in the NFL. All three should probably be given a last chance chance to show what they can do, at least in training camp. If they do feel they must clean house prior to the draft, I see no reason whatever why of the three, Boutte would be at the top of the list to be let go. Any argument on the part of Vrabel/Wolf that "he's not our guy. because we didn't draft him," is childish horseshit. Hire, retain, or dismiss on demonstrated merit, like an adult.

You've got to wonder if this is coming from Wolf.

Vrabel has no horse in this race. He didn't draft Boutte or Polk.

I mean it happens all the time when a new head coach comes in, he purges a lot of the players from the old regime. Some are just not scheme fits. Others are not culture fits. Boutte was good, not great last year. He definitely isn't untouchable.

There were definitely stories about his attitude last year. He called out Van Pelt about his play calling and Drake Maye for throw a ball low to him in a post game press conference and said he was tired about having to "demand" for them to throw the ball to him.


“For me personally, in the game, I get frustrated when I’m not getting thrown the ball knowing that I’ve caught every ball that’s thrown to me this season,” Boutte said. “So, I just feel like I would always go to the sideline and demand the ball. So, whether it was that deep ball – I asked for that. The Texans game, I asked for that. So, I feel like I shouldn’t have to really ask.”

But if you use common sense, the reason he is expendable is because we would be replacing him. Its not really that tough to get the same output from other JAGs. If we double-dipped at WR in the draft, we could potentially improve the WR room by leaps and bounds.

Add to this that the WR's were poorly coached last year, which leaves open the possibility that the present crew might be better than they have shown, and ditching Boutte, who by empirical measure actually was the best of the lot, along with the very meager compensation you are likely to get moving on from him, and to me it makes sense to see what develops at least through training camp.

Draft capital. That 5th can be packaged to move up to get the guy you want. SD traded 37 and 110 for our 34 to steal McConkey. 110 is a 4th, but that is the concept. While we should have selected McConkey in the first place, and extra 4th or 5th has good value for WR in this draft in round 3.

If you have a turd in your hand, you still have a turd in your hand. I know what you are saying, and I don't disagree with the principle, but if there is a path to drafting or trading for a player who is not a turd, then Boutte is expendable. You don't keep him over hurt feelings.

I am not even necessarily optimistic about Boutte's development, but it costs us very little (I expect very little interest in him and very minimal compensation for him) to keep him around, so iIwould keep him around. If we had a better roster, letting him go would be fine, but we don't. In the context of this dismal roster, he's - what? - a potential bright spot? We are like the homely guy at the singles bar: we can't afford to be that picky. (Are "singles bars" even still a thing?)

Let's be clear. We had the worst WR room in the NFL. No one should feel at all safe. Personally, I think that for 2025 we have Diggs, Hollins, ???, ???, Polk and Baker.

1) We need a WR rotation for 2025 and 2026. We have a start with Diggs and Hollins. Bourne also may be part of the present.

2) Vrabel and staff will evaluate the future potential of all of kids. Has Boutte shown enough to think that he will be a valuable WR's in the new offense, or should we move on from him? Ditto for Douglas? They have had a chance with their NFL reps, even with poor coaching.

3) Polk and Baker will be evaluated mostly from college tapes and interviews, and then in camp. Polk will almost assuredly have another year. Why not? He was a 3rd round quality WR and has had a year to learn a little of what the NFL is all about. I believe that Baker will show enough to give him another year, perhaps as inactive #6 WR.

I expect that we are likely to keep either Boutte or Douglas. To me, the question is whether we draft a WR and then trade Bourne.
