ESPNews showed a segment of the ESPYs, where the Steelers won the 2006 Best Team award, and Roethlisbeger looked normal. He also did an interview with Jim Rome:

During that, he said he doesn't remember anything between the car pulling in front of him (not the one he hit), and then waking up in the ambulance, and asking if it was a dream. Was "seconds, maybe a minute" away from dying because of internal bleeding. Also said that he sometimes wears a helmet, but forgot to grab it on the day. Compared this to a person that doesn't wear their seatbelt 100% of the time and if they should be called someone that doesn't wear a seatbelt. Didn't know if he would ever ride again, but it would definitely be with a helmet. Is focusing on football and returning now.

PFT also has all of the above and more:

I'm sure you meant "'normal' for Ben Rothlisberger".

Re: Roethlisberger looks normal, talking normal at ESPYs

Speaking of the ESPYs . . . if Roeth-senselis-berger is nominated for the Comeback Player of the Year award next year, I will probably, to quote Bill Simmons, throw up in my mouth. :bricks:

Re: Roethlisberger looks normal, talking normal at ESPYs

A silver lining is that he dropped some weight apparently, always thought he was sorta chunky in the face.

Re: Roethlisberger looks normal, talking normal at ESPYs

The scary part for the Steelers should be that he's beginning to sound just like the old 'normal" Ben. Once again claiming there were mitigating circumstances to deflect criticism of his performance and letting himself off the hook. PFT nailed it - if smashing your face into a Chrysler at 35 mph doesn't change you nothing will. Welcome back Ben. Glad to see Clayton was wrong as usual. Ben remains the anti-Brady, and that is a good thing for the other 31.

Re: Roethlisberger looks normal, talking normal at ESPYs

He does look like he's back to his old self... really hasn't changed a bit!

I suspect Brady and Big Ben will forever linked as QB's who won championships at an early age but I think their career paths will deviate greatly. Brady is building a legacy as a champion and a legendary QB while Big Ben may fizzle from here on out (heck, he was fizzling in the SB). If he has an average year and the Steelers fail to make the postseason he'll go from local God to goat awful quick.

Re: Roethlisberger looks normal, talking normal at ESPYs

Marky Mark apparently took a shot at him for not being a true team player. I would assume this has something to do with the Wahlbergs' background and the fact that he's most likely a Pats fan.

Re: Roethlisberger looks normal, talking normal at ESPYs

For a guy that can't act or rap worth a damn, Marky Mark should be careful about casting aspersions.
Some of you sound like your unhappy that he's recovered.

So we wouldn't have to see him in that godawful suit he wore to the Espys. At least our guy has a sense of style.

Re: Roethlisberger looks normal, talking normal at ESPYs

I'm glad you like your football players to be metrosexuals. Myself, I don't pay much attention to that sort of thing, while you do. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

That last comment was completely idiotic. Until you made that comment, no one here was expressing unhappiness over the young man's recovery and it's putrid of you to throw that on us.

Grab yourself a perspective. The posts here have been expressing incredulity at the fact that this man/child still (STILL!) is in public trying to downplay the seriousness of him not wearing a helmet on busy city streets while riding a pocket rocket.

If there was a dictionary for common expressions, Rothlisberger's picture would be next to the entry for "Doesn't Get It".

I guess after hearing virtually every media outlet call him an idiot for over a month has nothing to do with him moderately defending his actions.
He's aqlready said that if (IF!) he ever rides again it would be with a helmet so I'm not sure what he doesn't get.
My comment abotu some sounding glad referred to Ben being the 'anti-Brady and since in these prt Brady is God, it's easy to see this as a disparaging remark.
People are jumping all over this guy for not wearing a helmet when it is not required by law (leaving the smeantic of the permit aside for the moment). Their argument is that for the QB of a football team he owes it to the team and the organization to protect his safety. The implication is, he should be more careful than your average joe. This is the point I believe is a bunch of BS. How is it more permissable for a guy that makes 40K a year and is married with kids and possibly no life insurance to risk injury that a rich football player. Oh because so many fans will be disapponted because the team will suffer. Meanwhile the nobody that does the same thing has forced his wife and kids on welfare for years to come. That's perspective.

This is some of the worst convoluted BS I've read in a long time:

1) "My comment abotu some sounding glad referred to Ben being the 'anti-Brady and since in these prt Brady is God, it's easy to see this as a disparaging remark."

What you actually wrote was "Some of you sound like your unhappy that he's recovered." Those are YOUR ACTUAL WORDS. Disparaging someone's stupidity does NOT translate to being sorry he has recovered. I can't believe I have to write that out for a living, breathing, thinking human being .....but obviously, I had to.

2) Comparing the health risks of driving a car without a seatbelt (not cool) to riding the fastest motorcycle available on the market without (a seatbelt and) a helmet is beyond idiocy.

3) If you're representative of Pittsburgh fans, then I'm beginning to think you folks deserve Rothlisberger.

Re: Roethlisberger looks normal, talking normal at ESPYs

Just to throw fuel on the fire, I personally think he is overrated, and lucky that his team gift wrapped him a superbowl victory, and the refs decided that his non-touchdown was actually a rushing touchdown. We will never again see a QB with a 22 rating win a superbowl. It is an embarrassment to the game of football that he won anything with that performance.

His stats show that the team has done all the work for him these last couple years, yet he has been living high on the hog over the team's success. Any decent QB could have done what he did. He throws about 3 passes per quarter!

I also think that he was a complete punk for riding around with no permit like he was above the law, and at the very least, really immature by not wearing a helmet on his bike.

That being said, I am glad that he recovered, because he is a human being, and I used to own a motorcycle, as well.

I will enjoy watching him struggle during his career to prove that he can be productive as a QB and not just cherry-pick his passes, or run trick plays with Randel El anymore. He won't be able to hide behind his running game forever.

27-4, one AFCC appearance and a SB ring, I'll take that as a compliment, Thanks man, you made my day.
And 5 Rings, the SB notwithstanding, Ben was the best QB in the playoffs by a longshot and did not hide behind the running game at all. The only reason is pass attempt are limited is because the Steelers built up leads passing and running and then turned the game over to their defense and running game.
I know you probably don't remember this but in Brady's first SB run he was entirely unimpressive the entire playoffs and into the SB until the last drive. There were many many questionmarks about him after that win as well and he certainly didn't answer them the following year.
Only time will tell if he turns into a Hall of Famer or just a glorified game manager that some claim he is, but the fact is Rothlisberger is a top five QB right now entering his third year in the NFL.

Re: Roethlisberger looks normal, talking normal at ESPYs

When did Brady enter into the discussion?

To refute all your charges about Brady is simply a waste of time, but thanks for making your position clear!

Ben is the anti-Brady because he is as thick as a brick and an excuse maker and his accident didn't change a thing. Don't be too tough on me guys, I almost killed myself. I meant to wear the helmet I said I wouldn't wear and didn't need to wear except I forgot to grab it on my way out the door out of the bottom of the pile of stuff I regularly use that I keep in my basement for easy access. And of course I still don't grasp the significance of my not having the proper license to even ride without one at all...

Clayton said this was the turning point in Ben's career - when the stubborn to a fault young QB would be freed of his own limitations because an accident that could have been life as well as career threatening (though in hindsight Ben, it wasn't exactly either) had occurred almost as predicted and had opened his eyes to the folly of his own stubborness and a denial born of a quiet arrogance.

Guess again John. You too Closing Time. Physically he will be fine, although I still doubt he will be technically ready medically for the season opener but I also doubt the doctor's will have much say in how he apparoaches rehab either. But I also guarantee you that over the course of the 2006 season Ben will refer to his rehab and his injuries every time he underperforms. It's what he always does. And Cowher will continue to say he is 100% and was cleared medically which translates into he's FOS and making excuses again.

And CT, your Brady vs. Ben comments don't really warrant a detailed retort. Suffice it to say Brady never had a QB rating in his post season career close to Ben's in XL. And that was after being credited with a rushing TD that even he knows never happened.

Obviously, you can't comprehend what I wrote. It had ZILCH to do with on-field achievements, but with Ben's lack of maturity and emptiness of character.

Enjoy trying to feel good rooting for this meathead. We'll take Tom Brady every day of the week, and twice on Sundays.

Conversely though, Vanilla Ice apparently had some kind words of support for Roethlisberger, so it appears to be a wash.
