The one year rental on Blount has an additional residual benefit: losing him in free agency means he will count in the calculation for 2015 compensatory pick, as a plus. Practically speaking, this is probably worth a 6th or 7th round selection.

I think the Pats got by far the better side of this deal. But it comes down to whether you value elite talent or overall 52-deep team depth. All I can say is the Pats are perennially in contention for the Super Bowl, even with Matt Cassell at QB. And the Vikes are still groping for mediocrity, even with Matt Cassell at QB.

Football is a team sport = trade down. Basketball is a star-driven sport = trade up.
Well, we do have one coming in the 3rd (presumably) for the loss of Talib and a 6th/7th for the loss of Dane Fletcher. We did sign Revis and Chung which would offset those signings but both were released players and should not count in the equation. The LaFell and Browner signings offset the losses of Spikes and Blount therefore no Comp picks for those scenario's.

This is the prevailing thought process although no one really knows the exact formula for the super-secret cloak-and-dagger Compensation Equation. Many predicted a 6th last year and we wound up with a surprise 4th. Apparently those with intimate knowledge of this either die a mysterious death or vanish completely without a trace . I hope you have found a good hiding spot AdamJT13 .

He made plays all season, in multiple phases of the game. Hardly a few plays. It doesn't help he was catching passes from Ponder and Cassel. His situation isn't even comparable to Jamie Collins who only became a full time starter out of necessity.

I guess if you want to look at it your way, sure, Patterson is a disappointment if you ignore his KR TDs. Doing the same for Collins, he becomes a bust.

Alll of last season? Here is his game log from last year. He had a few big plays here and there, but for the most part was a complete non-factor until the end of the season.

So far after a year and a half, Collins has been a better player at his position than Patterson has been at his.

And our starting linebackers in the base would be Hightower, Hightower and Hightower.

Ha! I was going to say the same thing. LB depth is way, way, way more of an issue than secondary, even with the questions at SS.

We did sign Revis and Chung which would offset those signings but both were released players and should not count in the equation.

The formula is super secret, but one thing we do know for a fact is that neither Revis nor Chung will count.

"Coach Mike Zimmer insists Cordarrelle Patterson will be a "really good player," but admits "it just may take a while."
Despite becoming a starter playing on 77.1 percent of the snaps this season, Patterson has maddeningly taken a step back. He's doesn't have a full grasp of the new offense, doesn't run crisp routes and simply hasn't been open. It's resulted in 28 catches for 332 yards with one touchdown through 10 games. Patterson's freakish athletic abilities aren't going to shine through this year."
