I was/am glad they got Revis, I think he was a huge factor in their success last season (but not as much as Brady obviously, and IMHO not as much as a few others (Gronk and Edelman, Stork, Hightower all come to mind). I agree it is legit to consider him one of the best at that position over the past four and a half decades (since I started watching the NFL). However like a lot of you I've had enough of the "Revis Derangement Syndrome" in the local media (and its spillover to the more nervous members of the Pats fanbase). I think it says more about the local yokels than it does about the merits of whatever the Pats did (which we all know we will never know for sure, all we will know is the spin from the Revis side). We're in that dead zone between the Super Bowl and MLB opening day, and with the Celtics and Bruins not able to capture the market, the reaction reflects their need for content and contrived controversy more than reality, IMHO.
With that said, even the most ardent Revis fan has to admit that his history shows he is Sean Gilbert's nephew through and through. I'm sure he was happy to be a champ, but it is not his top priority. All you have to do is consider what one of the posters previously pointed to in this thread, compare Revis' approach to Brady's approach. Brady is all about winning and he isn't wrapped up in the paycheck scoreboard like Revis obviously is. Revis doesn't have a supermodel wife (that I know about) and he comes from a different place, so to me (and I suspect a lot of us here) the fact that those guys have different life-views doesn't make Revis a bad guy in the slightest. It's his way and I'm fine with that .......... but it also doesn't make him someone I can totally admire. Sorry but that's the fan in me and it doesn't make me (or any of us who feel that way) rotten people. We're not hoping the guy winds up in the gutter, we're just saying that while we accept his choice, the cost to him is a bit less admiration from a fan's perspective. I think he is likely to be plenty OK with that
One other thing along these lines, it is pretty disappointing considering the avalanche of adulation Revis has received here, from the team, the media, the fans, etc., that he wouldn't choose his words more carefully in what he says about what the Pats did. A simple statement would have sufficed, something like "they made a great offer to me and it was hard to turn down but as I stated previously I felt the best place for me to continue my career was to go home to the Jets." Words matter, he's smart enough to know that, and should practice that as well. But that's a nitpick.
